Thank you for all of your support and help as I have stepped into this role. This Pentecost Sunday we hear about how the Holy Spirit inflames the hearts of the Disciples. Thanks to everyone who is contributing this weekend to help our homeless veterans through Military Outreach USA. Thanks also to everyone who makes it a habit, week after week, to fill the baskets with food and other supplies for the pantries we serve. In April we collected 2532 items and delivered 104 bags to the elderly people at St. Joseph s Home (Little Sisters of the Poor), Catholic Charities, Marillac House, and St. Margaret of Scotland. Their clients appreciate all that we send them. And they have come to rely on our help. FAITH FORMATION RELIGIOUS EDUCATION 2018/19 REGISTRATION Register online! 7 Pentecost Sunday May 20, Family Promise Arrives at OLB Rectory Next Weekend Family Promise is a National Program committed to finding temporary housing for families who suddenly find themselves homeless because of unforeseen circumstances. The Catholic Community of Northbrook will be hosting these families from May 27 th through June 10 th. We need your help! Volunteers (individuals and families) are needed to prepare meals and host overnights at Our Lady of The Brook Rectory beginning next weekend. Currently there are three families enrolled in the program (3 adults and 5 children, aged 4 months to 10 years). There are still openings for volunteers and we hope you will consider fulfilling this important mission. Please see the posters in the social area at OLB and Narthex at St. Norbert for available dates. If you are willing to help, a host will welcome dinner volunteers at OLB at 6:00 pm (enter through garage doors). Often families help with the meal and your children are given an opportunity to help serve and socialize with the guests. The host will give you important information about the program and also help set up for the meal. You will be asked to stay until the overnight hosts arrive. Overnight hosts are welcome to share in the meal if they choose, or arrive by 8:00 pm. A bed and clean bedding will be provided (although many overnight hosts bring their own bedding or sleeping bag). Sign up for volunteers is available online at Sign Up Genius. Please be sure to list the entrée you are bringing and contact information. How We Help Walking With Our Brothers & Sisters in Song A Guide to the Music of the Funeral Liturgy Wednesday, May 30th at 3 pm Our Lady of the Brook - Social Area Michael Ward, Director of Music and Liturgy for the Catholic Community of Northbrook, will lead a presentation and discussion offering best practices on planning funeral liturgies. He will spend part of the time exploring how various options for music can result in more meaningful experiences during the Mass. We do not always have to pick the same 3-4 hymns that we hear at every funeral. Time for discussion and sharing of personal experiences will conclude the afternoon. All Bereavement Ministers, parishioners of the Catholic Community of Northbrook, and friends from surrounding parishes are invited to attend. This is an encore presentation of the event from March of this year.

11 Pentecost Sunday May 20, SUZANNE NOONAN - OLB Woman of the Year Suzanne joined Our Lady of the Brook parish thirteen years ago after returning from an eight-year adventure owning and managing a bed and breakfast in Ireland. She became involved In parish activities by joining the Women's Club, which segued into a position as Corresponding Secretary on the Board. She volunteered for several spiritual ministries: Eucharistic, Bereavement, Lector, Liturgy, and helping out in the sacristy. Her latest undertaking is as leader catechist of the OLB SPRED program, which gives her great spiritual rewards. She has also chaired the St. Joseph International Potluck Supper for the last two years. Suzanne has also been an enthusiastic volunteer in the United Way Reading For Success program tutoring young children in the Waukegan School District. She tutored adults in VITA, Oakton s Literacy Class (English as a second language). She was a volunteer for North Shore Hospice for several years. Suzanne enjoys her busy life and is most proud of her role as wife, mother and grandmother to a beautiful and loving family. Photo is from the ACCW Vicariate II Women of the Year Luncheon The luncheon was held at Chateau Ritz in Niles on Thirteen Biographies were presented for 13 Women of the Year from 13 parishes in the Vicariate. As a fitting tribute to the Mother of all of us, the Blessed Virgin Mary, Our Lady of the Brook s annual May Crowning took place on Mothers Day. Two of our founders and pillars of our parish did the honors. Georgina Winters crowned Mary, and Mary Horency assisted by carrying the crown. The women and girls of the parish participated in the celebration by bringing up carnations and placing them in the vases surrounding Mary's statue.

12 The Catholic Community of Northbrook Northbrook, Illinois 12 TREASURES FROM OUR TRADITION The disciples gathered on the fiftieth day after the Resurrection were not keeping their first Pentecost. For them, Pentecost was the fiftieth day after Passover, a feast of the first fruits of the harvest. It was the second most important feast of the year. Today, Jews gather on the eve of the feast to study scripture and the law, and after the feast begins at sundown, spend the day in joyful social gatherings. The meaning of the celebration is the giving of the law on Mount Sinai, so for Christians the connection to the gifts of the Holy Spirit is obvious. In Sicily and in the Pantheon in Rome, today the descent of the Holy Spirit is enacted with a stunning ritual. Some churches there have an eye in the roof open to the sky, called an oculus. After the Gospel today, thousands of rose petals fall from the oculus onto the assembly. Churches and homes are decked in greenery and flowers to express the new life the Holy Spirit brings on this, the birthday of the church. Rev. James Field, Copyright J. S. Paluch Co.
