5 Fourth Sunday in Ordinary Time January 29, Pastoral Sharing The Gospel today proclaims a gift given to us by Jesus in the Sermon on the Mount, the Beatitudes. The Beatitudes encompass Jesus teachings of spirituality, mercy, and compassion. They remind us that our lives are blessed even though life can be very challenging at times. Jesus teaches us that we will live a happy Christian life if we live according to the Beatitudes. Read and reflect on the Gospel: When Jesus saw the crowds, He went up the mountain, and after he had sat down, His disciples came to Him. He began to teach them, saying: "Blessed are the poor in spirit, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven. Blessed are they who mourn, for they will be comforted. Blessed are the meek, for they will inherit the land. Blessed are they who hunger and thirst for righteousness, for they will be satisfied. Blessed are the merciful, for they will be shown mercy. Blessed are the clean of heart, for they will see God. Blessed are the peacemakers, for they will be called children of God. Blessed are they who are persecuted for the sake of righteousness, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven. Blessed are you when they insult you and persecute you and utter every kind of evil against you falsely because of Me. Rejoice and be glad, for your reward will be great in heaven." Matthew 5:1-12A As Catholics, we are called to live our lives with love and humility, and the Beatitudes give us guidance to do just that. Hear Jesus words deep in your heart. Rejoice and be glad, for your reward will be great in heaven. God Bless, Maggie Bruce Youth Ministry Coordinator Positive Discipline - Part II Part I is in January 22 nd - The Third Sunday in Ordinary Time - St Norbert Bulletin When They re Naughty No child is perfect. Most parents find the most effective response to misbehavior to be a simple explanation of what the child did wrong, coupled with a brief period of separation. A reasonable length for a time-out is as many minutes as a child s age in years. Two time-tested principles of toddler discipline are that discipline must be immediate (toddlers have a short memory) and should not inflict pain (which sanctions physical violence). The one-time use of physical discipline on the behind can be effective when your child puts himself in immediate physical danger (like running into a busy street). If you reserve the use of physical discipline for only rare occasions, it can be very effective indeed! The Tough-to-Discipline Child One of the truly amazing things about children is how they have their own unique personalities, practically from the moment of birth (if not before). You, as a creative parent, must figure out what forms of discipline are most effective. Some toddlers wither at a glance. Others will bounce right up and follow you each time you attempt to isolate them after unacceptable behavior. Many children need the constancy of repetition to change their behavior. They don t change the first time around. However, if you find that no form of discipline, no matter how consistently and lovingly applied, seems to work for your child, mention this to your pediatrician. Perhaps your toddler has an undiscovered problem with vision, hearing, or even attention deficit. Discipline-A Tool to Guide Above all, remember that God has made you the first and best teacher of your child. Discipline is one of the most important tools God has given you to guide your child to Him. Use it wisely and lovingly. Katherine Dowling Schlaerth, M.D.

8 The Catholic Community of Northbrook Northbrook, Illinois 8 Calling all Men of the Parishes! Many men of our Northbrook parishes can attest to the benefits derived from attending one of our two annual retreats at Bellarmine Jesuit Retreat House in Barrington. We have an outstanding opportunity presenting itself this coming February 17-19, 2017 to attend a weekend retreat led by a Jesuit priest who also happens to be an ASTRONOMER assigned to the Vatican in Italy! Fr. Paul Mueller, SJ divides his time between the Vatican Observatory in Castel Gandolfo, Italy and Tucson, AZ; however, he is making a detour to serve as the Retreat Master for the retreat titled The Heavens Proclaim the Glory of God. As the co-author of a book published in 2014 titled Would You Baptize an Extraterrestrial?, this weekend will undoubtedly touch on many questions regarding the potential for reconciling what is known and unknown scientifically with what we believe as Christians. Fr. Mueller earned a BA in Physics at Boston University, MA degrees in Philosophy, Divinity and Sacred Theology as well as a Master s in Physics and PhD from the University of Chicago. The weekend format will follow the Spiritual Exercises of St. Ignatius providing lectures interspersed with plenty of personal time for reflection and rest. Group begins January 30, :00 to 8:30 PM Lower level of the Parish Center Book may be purchased from The Marian Fathers of the Immaculate Conception El Nino Trip One Reflection By Catherine Pastuovic "Only in heaven will we see how much we owe to the poor for helping us to love God better because of them." -Mother Teresa This quote is an incredibly accurate representation of how this mission trip affected me. As a 19 year old woman venturing to a far away place without a parent, sibling or friend with me, it's safe to say that I was quite nervous for what the following week had in store. What am I going to be doing? Where am I going to be sleeping? How are the local people of Pueblo Viejo going to react to our presence? And quite honestly, are there a lot of bugs? These are just some of the questions I had scrolling through my head as I boarded the plane with a group of practical strangers. Little did I know that these strangers would become great friends and individuals whom I greatly admire. After two plane rides, a bus ride and a three hour long, bumpy truck ride through the mountains, we arrived in the remote town of Pueblo Viejo. Wow, was it beautiful; not only the mountainous landscapes, but the people. I felt so incredibly welcomed. From the moment we arrived, we hit the ground running. The clinic got fully set up in about 2 hours which was truly astounding to me. These dentist really knew what they were doing! The next four days in the clinic went by in the blink of an eye. I, along with all the other volunteers, learned so much from the dentists. We learned how to pack material for fillings, apply fluoride during cleanings and even extract teeth. One individual equated watching the dentists work on patients to watching a professional athlete play their sport. This is a beyond perfect statement. I have never seen people work so quickly, thoroughly and passionately before in my life. Seeing over 300 patients in 4 days seems like a nearly impossible task, but the dental professionals made it look easy. The people of Pueblo Viejo and its surrounding villages are what made the trip so worth it. They made me feel so sure of my faith or so close to God. From the numerous people who will no longer have intense tooth aches, to the individuals who had their front teeth fixed so they feel confident enough to smile, to the little kids who had their teeth polished to be pearly white, I remember them all. Nothing beats the feeling of having a total stranger hug you after having a procedure done, knowing that you just did them a huge service and aided their personal health so much. They were so grateful for the work we were doing, but little did they know that we were so thankful for their kind souls and gentle spirit. Despite the language barrier, I felt so connected to every patient because of our shared faith. Even the shortest of interactions were very profound. Playing with little kids who waited in line to be seen was probably my favorite part of the trip. Despite what life dealt, they were filled with so much joy that overflowed onto all of us volunteers. Who would have thought that bouncing a ball around for hours could bring everyone so much happiness? In addition, attending mass every night enhanced the sense of unity between us and the community. Mass was the perfect way to wind down and decompress after a long day of work. Thanks to this trip I grew so much as an individual. My Spanish improved exponentially, I established life long friendships, I gained a greater sense of self and I strive to serve others and appreciate my own blessings everyday at home. The El Niño Rey dental mission trip renewed my desire to work as a heath professional in my future, helping those in need. This organization not only brings dental care to those in need, but immense opportunities for all those involved. I will never forget this experience.
