3 Twenty-Ninth Sunday of Ordinary Time October 21, As I reflect on today s gospel reading, I can t help but envision Jesus, shaking His head, looking at His two disciples who wish to be close to him, and thinking how much they have misunderstood his words again. John and James ask of Jesus, In your glory we may sit one at your right and the other at your left. Jesus then said to them, you don t know what you are asking. The follow-up conversation that Jesus had with Mark and James seems to me to be one of many that Jesus had with His disciples in which He tried to clarify and redefine a message that has been misunderstood. He says, whoever wishes to be great among you will be your servant; whoever wishes to be first among you will be the slave of all. In other words, do not look to be exalted, look to be a humble servant. How far off course could the disciples have been as they attempted to understand Jesus words? I read the Bible, I participate in a weekly men s group, I have attended retreats, I m attentive in Mass on Sunday and Tuesday, I m a big fan of Matthew Kelly and Bishop Robert Barron. You would think I should have a pretty good understanding of Jesus messages. Yet, it s easy for me to think back on countless occasions that I impatiently searched for answers from God-- -and more times than not, have found myself completely misunderstanding what God was saying to me. Often, the answers were right in front of my eyes. I am constantly looking for methods, strategies, tactics or systems for deciphering God s message as I try to get closer to Him. Two events that I have experienced within the last few years have helped me better prepare myself to hear God s voice in my life. Both have changed my life. The first was when I returned to participating in reconciliation on a regular basis. I don t really remember why or even when I stopped going to confession, but I did and the longer I stayed away, the harder it was for me to ever think of confessing my sins. Thankfully I did return. Words cannot describe the peace that came over me once I started to receive the sacrament of reconciliation again. During the conversations I had with priests in confession, I found that I was not just reflecting on my life, but also asking how to better understand my relationship with Jesus Christ. The second event that took place in my life to help me gain a better understanding of Jesus was when someone took the time to teach me about the daily examen. The examen, or examination of conscience, is a quick prayer that helps me see where God was active in my day. This prayer was popularized by St. Ignatius Loyola. Here is a brief explanation of this five-step prayer: 1) Remembering that you re in the presence of God. 2) Recall two or three things that happened today for which you are especially grateful. 3) Review your day from start to finish, noticing where you experienced God s presence. 4) You may have sinned today or done something you regret. Express your sorrow to God and ask for forgiveness. 5) At the close of the prayer, ask for God s grace for the following day. Like James and Mark, I want to be close to Jesus. Praying daily and participating in the sacraments of my Catholic faith community, I hope to continue to better understand His lessons and hear Jesus message more clearly. Principal Steve Schacherer

Sacrament of the Anointing of the Sick at Our Lady of the Brook Sun. October 28 th at the 10 am Mass Sacrament of the Anointing of the Sick at St. Norbert Sat. October 27 th at the 5:00 pm Mass Sun. October 28 th at the 7:30 am and 5:30 pm Masses The Second Vatican council in 1972 changed the name of the sacrament of Extreme Unction to The Sacrament of the Anointing of the Sick. The emphasis of the sacrament is to offer grace and comfort to assist the living in their illness to become stronger. Any person can be anointed whose health is seriously impaired by sickness or old age, including those who are: 1) now seriously ill, 2) temporarily ill or convalescing, 3) chronically ill (heart condition, diabetes, asthma, etc.), 4) emotionally troubled, 5) those with an addictive disease, 6) the elderly, even if no serious illness is present and 7) those preparing for surgery in the near future. (A cold, sore throat, rash, flu etc. would not be cause for anointing). The priest anoints the person by first making the sign of the cross on their forehead, with the oil blessed by the bishop on Holy Thursday, and says: Through this holy anointing, may the Lord in his love and mercy help you with the grace of the Holy Spirit. Then he anoints the palms of both hands saying, May the Lord who frees you from sin save you and raise you up. If one is physically unable to attend the Mass of the Anointing of the Sick, please call the rectory at (847) After receiving the message, the Priest will call and make an appointment to visit and anoint the person at home. Our Lord s Peace and Blessings, Mona Lukas, Director Ministry of Care

10 The Catholic Community of Northbrook Northbrook, Illinois 10 Dear Friend, I am inviting you to attend a very important event for men happening for the Catholic Community of Northbrook in November. I say for the Catholic Community of Northbrook because while your presence and participation are necessary and vital, the real winner is the parish of St. Norbert and Our Lady of the Brook. The event is Christ Renews His Parish (CRHP), which occurs on the weekend of November 3 and 4 at Our Lady of the Brook. My experience in other parishes has been that when men and women experience CRHP weekends, parishes come alive in a way they have not been before. I have seen it happen in three parishes and there is only one reason it cannot happen here--if we say no. Several men in our Parish have already experienced a CRHP weekend and they want to pass it on to you. It will be disappointing to me and to those men who are preparing the weekend if you say no, but what is more disappointing is that you are saying no to get to know Christ better. I do not think you want to do that for your sake or for the Catholic Community of Northbrook's sake. In the coming weeks one of us will be contacting you to see if you are available on that weekend. In the past, I have made a personal money back guarantee to all attendees that you will enjoy the weekend. If you do not find it fulfilling, I will personally pay for your weekend. What is necessary from you is an openness to the weekend---it is like a retreat but different and a willingness to give yourself a Saturday and Sunday to the Lord. Having seen what this weekend can do for individuals and for parishes, please consider it and be a part of a wonderful experience. To reserve a spot, please contact Patrick Marschall at pjmarschall@gmail.com or Tom Dadigan at tdadigan@sbcglobal.net. Yours in Christ, Fr. 11 Twenty-Ninth Sunday of Ordinary Time October 21,

12 The Catholic Community of Northbrook Northbrook, Illinois 12 October 21, 2018 Dear Sisters and Brothers, In the Gospel reading for World Mission Sunday, Jesus reminds us of His mission to serve and to give his life as a ransom for many (Mark 10:45). Through Renew My Church, we embrace this mission in which He calls us to serve others and give new life in Christ. In celebrating World Mission Sunday, we as members of the Church in the Archdiocese of Chicago proclaim the life-giving presence of Jesus Christ throughout our world. The World Mission Sunday collection, celebrated worldwide on October 21, provides vital assistance to over 1,000 economically poor dioceses responding to spiritual and material needs across Africa, Asia, and remote areas of Latin America and the Pacific Islands. It also resources churches and religious congregations that accompany people facing poverty, violent conflict, and displacement in the Middle East, Northeast Africa, India and Eastern Europe. It is my hope that every parish in the Archdiocese of Chicago embraces World Mission Sunday as an opportunity to join with the global Church in making disciples throughout our world, as we are called to do during the Renew My Church process. May our witness inspire others in our Chicago community, especially young people, to embrace the call to love and follow Christ. With every good wish, I remain, Sincerely yours in Christ Cardinal Blase Cupich Archbishop of Chicago TREASURES FROM OUR TRADITION As election campaigns move into high gear, sometimes the phrase the Catholic vote is heard. It s an interesting concept, since Catholics started out in this country as a very fragile group: fewer than forty thousand of us at the time of the first census in 1790, and only about 2 percent of the population by It was a priestless church for all intents and purposes, lay-led clusters of Catholics waiting patiently for the occasional visit of a priest, sustained by gathering when they could on Sunday for devotional prayer like litanies and the rosary. They tried to hold on to their ancestral faith as best they could. Archbishop Jean-Louis Cheverus told one family in Maine to every day say your prayers on your knees with affection, and every Sunday gather to hear the Gospel, to pray in common, and to quiz the children on the catechism. Inevitably, some became Protestant, but many more stayed Catholic from generation to generation, with very little encouragement or sacramental ministry from the clergy. Archbishop John Carroll, the first American bishop, tried to make Church law flexible: shortening the length of the fast before Communion, easing the Lenten fast, and even relaxing the rule of Sabbath rest at harvest time. Catholicism in England had been quietly sustained in this way for two centuries, and the first American Catholics carried on as had their ancestors, providing a fertile soil for the unprecedented success and phenomenal growth of the Church in our country. Rev. James Field, Copyright J. S. Paluch Co. Don t Miss This!
