3 Seventeenth Sunday in Ordinary Time July 30, Pastoral Sharing The readings today refer to treasures, wisdom, pearls, the kingdom of God, our relationship with God and love of one another. According to Webster s New Twentieth Century dictionary, several definitions of treasure were defined. A few included: as a noun, something or someone considered very valuable. As a verb, to hoard, collect, or save up (money, valuable, etc.) as for future use; to attach a great value to, to cherish. King Solomon, in the first reading, asked God for the gift/treasure of wisdom to lead and guide his people. We have all been blest by God with special gifts/treasures in which we are able to help ourselves and others in our/ their relationship with God. Do we hide these gifts or use them for others in need? The Kingdom of God might be thought of as being far away, but it is here with and around us in our relationship to God and others on a daily basis in things we see, do, think, hear, discuss and pray about. In thinking about treasures, one of the residences the Ministers of Care regularly visit immediately came to mind. The ministers conduct a weekly prayer/communion service for residents who are experiencing various degrees of memory loss. The residents may have some difficulty remembering their names or what happened yesterday; but they do remember and share the treasures of their faith. Mass attendance as a child, First Holy Communion, Confirmation and Marriage Celebrations are eagerly talked about with beautiful smiles. During the prayer service they recite, with loud voices, their dearly loved prayers of the Our Father, Hail Mary and the Rosary. They include petitions and prayers for their family and friends, and look with such reverence when Holy Communion is offered to them. Their treasure is their faith: knowing God loves them in their new home. Their smiles and hugs speak volumes and their faith is shared in assisting each other with finding a place to sit, handing out prayer cards, looking at pictures or calming someone who may be a little anxious. They no longer have a home to care for, a car to drive or family responsibilities. What they do have is something more precious: the love and concern for one another and those who care for them. Visiting with parishioners (and others) who are unable to attend Mass (whether in a hospital, nursing home or homebound) by being present to them in silence, or praying, laughing, crying or sharing with them is a treasure. When ill, some people may challenge, grow toward or distance themselves from their faith. Praying and receiving all of God s love and grace in Holy Communion or a Spiritual Communion can reestablish or strengthen them in dealing with their current, challenging situations and put them at peace. Do you feel called to this beautiful ministry to be present with people: to pray with them, listen to their faith stories and life journeys, concerns, joys and hopes? The next Minister of Care Training will be held at St. Benedicts Nursing Home in Niles, IL taught by retired Priests. Classes will be held from 7-9 p.m., on 5 consecutive Wednesdays. The 6 th and final class will be held in Northbrook, led by Mona Lukas, Director of Ministry of Care to explain the protocol of visiting parishioners at both St. Norbert and Our Lady of the Brook. After the completion of the course, new ministers will shadow experienced ministers in the various areas of ministry. Time commitment is a minimum of 1 hour per month but ministers decide how much more they would like to share themselves with others. Please pray about joining this most wonderful ministry of the Catholic Community of Northbrook. You will give of yourselves but you will receive a priceless treasure from those you visit. The boxes remain in the St. Norbert vestibule for these items. The food pantries continue to have high demand in the summer months, so please keep making it a habit to fill the baskets. The 19th Annual St. Norbert Golf Outing Valker Cup will be held Friday, September 22, 2017 at the Traditions of Chevy Chase Country Club in Wheeling, IL. Your Golf Committee To Teach Who Christ Is A Campaign for St. Norbert Parish Proposed Church Addition and Renovation Update We hope you are enjoying the church air conditioning this summer! The replacement of the old chiller/ air handler system was completed this past spring. A few adjustments have been made to the fans on especially hot days and all appears to be working well. We came in on budget for a total cost of approximately $800,000. The next project in the queue is the church addition and renovation. We are working on the final design and specification drawings for a Village permit hearing early October. Once approval is received interviews with general contractors and cost bidding will begin. This phase should be completed early As a recap, the proposed improvements to the church consist of 3 components: the first is to remove and replace the entrance plaza and entry stairs on the front of the church. The second is to renovate the narthex area and a portion of the rear of the worship space. The third component is to provide a 750 square foot addition on the south side of the building. The goal is to begin the addition component spring This will include ADA compliant bathrooms along with an ADA accessible elevator to the lower parish hall. The existing basement exit stairs will be reconfigured to allow direct access from the parish hall to the church. The addition will have a dedicated entry from the exterior that will serve both the parish hall and the church. At the school we are reviewing proposals to replace the front entry doors to improve security and access to the building. More updates will be forthcoming as we finalize designs and navigate the Village permit process.

Services offered include pregnancy tests, ultrasound exams and compassionate and confidential counseling. Each client is given honest and accurate information so she can make an informed decision. Aid for Women s residential programs, Heather s House and Monica s House, help those women whose decision to choose life is further complicated by lack of adequate housing. The homes offer a safe place where women and their babies can live while they develop parenting and life skills, and complete their education or career goals so they can be loving, self-sufficient parents.
