Eleventh Sunday in Ordinary Time June 17, This is how it is with the kingdom of God; it is as if a man were to scatter seed on the land and would sleep and rise night and day and the seed would sprout and grow, he knows not how. Of its own accord the land yields fruit, first the blade, then the ear, then the full grain in the ear. And when the grain is ripe, he wields the sickle at once, for the harvest has come. Mark 4:26-29 Jesus words above are the opening to this weekend s Gospel. Admittedly, I do not know much about proper techniques when it comes to gardening, much less tending to and farming an entire field. However, I think it is safe to assume that if I were to simply plant the seeds and then completely ignore those same seeds, I should not expect much of harvest. Yet as unbelievable as this may seem to us, this is exactly what Jesus tells us about the Kingdom of God. We are to scatter the seeds, but the ultimate sprouting and growth depend upon God s design. God takes all of the gifts we have been given and puts all of them to work in the kingdom, even the gifts that may seem the smallest and least significant in our own eyes. All the gifts of all the members of the Body of Christ are part of God s design. We see how Jesus compares the smallest of gifts to a mustard seed, the smallest of all seeds, in the second half of the Gospel. It is like a mustard seed that, when it is sown in the ground, is the smallest of all the seeds on the earth. But once it is sown, it springs up and becomes the largest of plants and puts forth large branches, so that the birds of the sky can dwell in its shade. Mark 4:31-32 There is much talk throughout the Catholic Church at local parish levels, at diocesan levels, and even higher levels about the need to evangelize and share the faith with our brothers and sisters, especially those whom we see less and less often with us at Mass. We have all noticed the decline in Mass attendance, both by our own families, by our friends, and by looking around at all the space in the pews surrounding us. Personally, there are times where it seems like a daunting if not a completely and totally impossible task of reaching all those people. Parables like this one reassure me, as I hope it does you, that we are not alone. This responsibility falls on all of us together, not any one of us individually. All we have to do is continue planting the seeds as we go and God will handle the rest. Now that I think I can handle that! How about you? Who might you try and plant some seeds with this week? On another note, I would like to invite you to join us at 8:30 am on Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday of this week. The locations will be at the same place as the regular daily Masses would be. You will see a letter from Cardinal Cupich in today s bulletin (page 7) regarding his request to cancel all weekday Masses while all priests from the entire Archdiocese of Chicago are away at a convocation. We will gather for Communion Services in place of the regularly scheduled Masses. This will give us an opportunity to gather as a family of faith, to be nourished by the Eucharist and, in a special way, to pray for the priests attending this convocation as Cardinal Cupich has asked us to do. As you might already be assuming, this does mean that our priests will not be available while they are at the convocation. If the need arises where you would normally call the Parish Office looking for one of the priests, please do so. The Pastoral Staff is here for you and will do our best to respond to your needs as they arise. The Parish Office will be open during the normal business (9am-8pm Monday-Thursday and 9am-1pm on Friday) hours this week. God Bless, Michael Ward Director of Music & Liturgy Catholic Community of Northbrook THE VIEW FROM THE BENCH

Eleventh Sunday in Ordinary Time June 17, MEMORIES Wedding Banns During the months of June and July the following couples will promise to love one another as Christ has loved them. This generous vow, including the willingness to live together till death parts, to be faithful to one another, to give each other the right to children, God willing, gives us a vague, shadowy glimpse of what the divine love for us must be like. Jane Nielsen & Timothy Kroski III Christopher Kuhns & Kathleen Coyle II Darek Wojewnik & Cassandra Franzese I Men s Club Meeting The Men s Club will hold its monthly meeting on Monday, June 18 th at 7:30 pm in the Church Hall Basement. All adult men of our Catholic Community are invited and encouraged to attend. Please come out and meet some new friends, build upon old acquaintances, and help to serve the needs of our Catholic Community. Dinner will be served after the meeting. Picture Directories Are Here! If you want to pick yours up at the Parish Office, please do so during the week. We will check off names of those who had their photo taken for the directory, as each photographed family is entitled to a book. We are hoping to hand out the Directory after Masses, as soon as we can put some volunteers together. If you could give half an hour after Mass, contact Amy in the parish office: amy@olbparish.org or (847) with the Mass Time you usually attend. Books are available for purchase if you did not have your family photographed, for $15. Check or cash (exact change) preferred, and this must be done in the parish office. Our Lady of the Brook recently celebrated its 50 th anniversary. Many of us have happy memories for special OLB events and activities during those years. Father Heinz and parishioner Jane Marmet (a volunteer historian in Glenview) believe these things should be preserved and remembered for those who follow us. If you would like to share some of your memories, Jane will be happy to collect your notes by or in writing. She will also be happy to meet and tape oral memories for transcription. Eventually a collection of those memories will be prepared. You can contact Jane at her home: 3068 Springdale, Glenview, IL 60025, by to Jmarmet@aol.com, or at (847) Thank you in advance for your participation. Sharing Ministry Once again, this is your weekly reminder to make it a habit to fill the baskets at church to help the pantries we serve at St. Margaret of Scotland, Catholic Charities, Marillac House, and St. Joseph s Home for the Elderly. Baking supplies, canned fruits and vegetables, and personal hygiene items are welcome, as are paper products and cleaning supplies. There are also boxes at both St. Norbert and Our Lady of the Brook for donations of new and gently used school supplies, backpacks, and gift cards to Walmart, Walgreens, and other sources of school supplies. If not us, who? If not now, when?

The Catholic Community of Northbrook Northbrook, Illinois 6 Family Promise Moves On Last weekend the families hosted by the Catholic Community of Northbrook (at the OLB Rectory) moved onto their next host site, North Shore Congregation Israel where they will stay for one week. Volunteers from the Catholic Community of Northbrook welcomed the families with homemade meals, a friendly welcoming atmosphere, and comfortable beds in a homelike setting. We had the opportunity to celebrate two of our families weddings, some graduations and a family getting placed in housing. Many volunteers brought children and grandchildren who enjoyed playing board games, baseball and catch. The advantage of the Family Promise program is that families can stay together, mothers with their children and often fathers who are working at earning a wage that was not adequate to keep them in their former homes. In some cases, apartments or homes were lost due to rising interest rates or a job loss, or because of illness or unforeseen events. Statistics indicate that approximately 62% of Americas have no emergency savings for things such as a $1000 emergency room visit or a $500 car repair. When faced with these unforeseen events, they hope to borrow from family or friends or max out credit cards leading to monthly payments that escalate with high interest rates. The three reasons most often cited for homelessness are lack of affordable housing, unemployment and poverty. 2.5 million children will experience homelessness this year in America, one in 30 children in the US experience homelessness annually and nearly 1.3 million school children were homeless in the 2014/2015 school year. (Homelessness Poverty Fact Sheet, Familypromise.org.). Many of the sites which host Family Promise are schools or church halls. Portable cots are provided to each participant and travel with the guests to each site. They are responsible for their own laundry and bedding. The advantage of the OLB Rectory is that we have beds in individual suites, giving each family privacy and their own bath and shower. We also provide a washer and dryer on the site so exhausted families can throw in a load of wash when they arrive in the evening and have clean laundry done the next morning. We would like to thank the many volunteers (of all ages) who stepped forward to help host the families. Fr. Bob, grandparents, single adults, parents with their children, men s club members and guild members and parish staff/maintenance came together to help. Our site is a favorite of the families because of the home like atmosphere and private suites. We hope you will consider volunteering at the next opportunity we have been hosting at least twice a year. More information about Family Promise is available on their website, Familypromise.org.

Eleventh Sunday in Ordinary Time June 17, Share Your Photos! Did you get a great photo at Graduation? At Block Party? At another parish event? Send them to Amy and we will rotate them on the narthex television screen throughout the summer. amy@olbparish.org or APrincipi@stnorbertparish.org. Thanks!

Eleventh Sunday in Ordinary Time June 17, Dear Fr. Bob, Thank You Thank you for your parish s generous donation of $9955 to the collection for the Catholic Campaign for Human Development (CCHD). For nearly 50 years, CCHD has been doing the work of Renew My Church supporting the formation of local leaders, standing with and lifting up marginalized communities, and inspiring witness through service as missionary disciples. In 2017/18, CCHD is investing in 21 local organizations through economic and community development grants that total nearly half a million dollars. Your gracious support funds projects that promote violence prevention, workers rights, affordable housing, education, and quality of life for people with disabilities and seniors. Again we thank you for your faithful support of CCHD. Elena Segura, CCHD Diocesan Director Widows & Widowers Support Group OLPH & SCL The next meeting of the Widows and Widowers Support Group will take place on Monday, June 18from 9:30 11:00 AM in the Father Flavin Room at OLPH (located in the Rectory Building at 1775 Grove Street, Glenview, IL 60025). Open to all, this group provides social and fellowship opportunities for those having lost a spouse or partner. It is not a Bereavement Support group, but a social group for the next stage of the process. Please join us as we get reacquainted and discuss the future direction of this ministry. If you have questions, please contact Irene M. Alwan at (847) /c or ima@youritdept.com from St Catherine Laboure. 10 The Catholic Community of Northbrook Northbrook, Illinois 10 Block Party Fun! Migrant families who are escaping various forms of violence and persecution in their homeland are being routinely separated at the boarder. Since October 2017, over 700 children have been separated from their parents, including over 100 children under the age of four. On May 4, 2018, DHS stated that it will refer all individuals who cross the border without authorization for criminal prosecution, including adult members of family units. If implemented, this policy will undoubtedly lead to a drastic increase in incidences of family separation. ACTION: Ask Congress to protect immigrant families seeking safety and shelter from violence. Visit for ways to contact your officials. For additional ways to advocate for immigrants and refugees visit: Block Party Thanks! On behalf of the St. Norbert Block Party Cooking/ Grill Masters, Jim Allen, Jim Graehling, and Bob Lozaro, we would like to thank Matt, Laura and Emily Callahan and Dan Delany for jumping in and helping during an extraordinary rush for food. Recognizing we were short of help and taking immediate action helped in serving our patrons in a more timely manner. Your help was much appreciated. Bob Lozaro
