3 Third Sunday in Ordinary Time January 27, Today s Gospel shared the story about Jesus at the beginning of his ministry. This passage from Luke told us of many eyewitnesses who shared the Word so that these accounts con nued through many genera ons. As we know, there is a tremendous value when we are told of an event that has been shared with us from the eyes of people who were present when the event took place. This past summer, I started to meet the St. Norbert School community. I had many preconcep ons of Catholic schools. Following a long career spent mostly in secular school environments, I had li le experience with the day-to-day workings of a Catholic school. I would like to take this opportunity to share some of my reflec ons as an eyewitness to the wonderful benefits of being a member of St. Norbert Catholic School community. Each day, we commence and conclude our school day reflec ng on the life of Jesus Christ and the lessons of our Catholic faith. We also pray together before we eat lunch. Three mes a day we stop, reflect, and pray together. I have realized that that our children are experiencing not only the rou ne of prayer, but also are being taught the value of devo on and quiet reflec on in a world that is o en filled with constant noise and hec c pace. St. Norbert is a school community that houses (under one roof) three-year-olds to fourteen-year-olds. Having this mul ple-grade con nuity offers us so many benefits. One of which is how our middle school students lead the younger children. Our older students walk with our preschoolers to Mass, and then once in church, they offer guidance for when we kneel, how to genuflect, how to par cipate during our weekly celebra on of the Eucharist. This is truly an awesome sight. Many children encounter two or even three building transi ons during their elementary school experience. I feel that our children are very fortunate to be in a school that can be their home for all their elementary school years. As we were approaching Thanksgiving, two students came to me with a le er. Through this le er, these children explained that they had become aware of a family outside of our school community that was going through difficult mes and needed support. The le er went on to ask if people in our community could help this family and also the neighborhood that this family lived in. This request, ini ated by our two students, became the founda on for our all-school service project that will benefit Chicago Jesuit Academy which is located in the Aus n neighborhood in Chicago. This fine example of our student compassion, caring and involvement underscores the vision of St. Norbert School: to find God in all things through learning, faith and service. Today, January 27 th we begin a week of celebra ng Catholic Schools. Please accept our invita on to visit our school, which will host an open house and science fair immediately following St. Norbert s 11:30 am Mass. Come over and be an eyewitness to our extraordinary school community! Steve Schacherer, Principal St. Norbert School

9 Third Sunday in Ordinary Time January 27, Dear Friend, I am inviting you to attend a very important event for men happening for the Catholic Community of Northbrook in November. I say for the Catholic Community of Northbrook because while your presence and participation are necessary and vital, the real winner is the parish of St. Norbert and Our Lady of the Brook. The event is Welcome, formerly CRHP 2.0, which occurs on the weekend of March 2 & 3 at Our Lady of the Brook. My experience in other parishes has been that when men and women experience these weekends, parishes come alive in a way they have not been before. I have seen it happen in three parishes and there is only one reason it cannot happen here--if we say no. Several men in our Parish have previously experienced a CRHP weekend and they want to pass it on to you. In the past, I have made a personal money back guarantee to all attendees that you will enjoy the weekend. If you do not find it fulfilling, I will personally pay for your weekend. What is necessary from you is an openness to the weekend---it is like a retreat but different and a willingness to give yourself a Saturday and Sunday to the Lord. Having seen what this weekend can do for individuals and for parishes, please consider it and be a part of a wonderful experience. To reserve a spot, please contact Dev Kennedy at DevKennedy@stnorbertparish.org. Yours in Christ, Fr.
