3 Fifth Sunday of Ordinary Time February 10, Do not be afraid; from now on you will be catching men. When they brought their boats to the shore, they left everything and followed him. Luke 5:10-11 When have you had an experience like that in our Gospel reading today? When has God called you in bizarre and unexpected ways? Did you have the courage to say yes and leave everything behind? Reflecting on today s Gospel brought me back to February I had been on a bit of hiatus from the music world as I was struggling to discern what was next for me personally and professionally. My phone rang with a call from a cantor at my previous church. He explained how their organist had suddenly resigned. The cantor was now at a different church from where we last crossed paths, and he asked if I would ever consider coming to their church to help for a few weeks until they figured out what to do next. To make a long story short, these few weeks turned into nearly six months and my call was clearer than it had been in a long time. As my time at that parish was coming to an end, I noticed a certain place in Northbrook (that we all know and love) was searching for a new Music Director. I think we know how this story ends, but we did not make it today without some people being not afraid to say yes. I had to take to heart Jesus words, Do not be afraid and put myself out there by taking a chance and applying for this position at a parish and in an area further away from family than I planned on being. I was at a point in my life where I thought living close to family was where I needed to be. Possibly more important than my yes, Fr. Bob also had to boldly say yes to the Holy Spirit who was guiding him towards a new, (very) young Music Director. How easy would it have been for either side to be too afraid to say yes? Without that yes, we would not be here today. That yes not only brought me here, ministering in a parish I love with people I love, but it led to the new love I have in my life now. Today my wife and I are celebrating our first wedding anniversary. This yes led me to a parish where I love to come to work each day and a family I get to go home to who is my entire world. What a timely Gospel! I give thanks today for having had the courage to say yes and leaving my old ways behind. Where will you take a chance? Where might your yes lead you? God Bless, Michael Ward Director of Music & Liturgy THE VIEW FROM THE BENCH

He responds, Here I am...send me! Where in your life do you hear the call of God? What do you need in order to respond to this call as Isaiah did? In the second reading, St. Paul reminds the Corinthians of the witness he has provided to them of Jesus life, death and resurrection. In your own life, who has been a witness of faith for you? How are you a witness for others? In the life of faith we are called to persistence. Where might Jesus be calling you to try one more time to put out your nets for a catch? 5 Fifth Sunday of Ordinary Time February 10, Senior Club February Meeting Wedding Banns During the month of February the following couple will promise to love one another as Christ has loved them. This generous vow, including the willingness to live together till death parts, to be faithful to one another, to give each other the right to children, God willing, gives us a vague, shadowy glimpse of what the divine love for us must be like. David Miller & Gina Uthe II MULTI-PARISH LISTENING SESSION Monday, Feb. 18 at 7 pm St. Isaac Jogues 8149 W. Golf Road, Niles, IL Travel the Holy Land Monday, Feb. 18 Our Lady of the Brook, 9:00 am Join the Senior Club of the Catholic Community of Northbrook for a delicious breakfast provided by the Northbrook Women s Club and Laurie DeVillers from Trans World Travel. Ever think about visiting the Holy Land? Learn more about this fascinating place, its History, important sites and the ins and outs of traveling there. As you may recall, we held a Listening Session in our parish on Nov. 14 for all of us to talk openly about the Clergy Abuse issue. Another Listening Session will be offered for the parishes in our Deanery next week. Bishop Bartosic, our Vicar for Vicariate II, has invited us to participate in a Deanery E listening session on the current crisis in our Church and the Bishop s response. This listening session will be facilitated by a staff member from the Archdiocese of Chicago s Office for the Protection of Children and Youth. Bishop Bartosic will be present to listen to your concerns. This is another opportunity for members of this parish to voice your concerns. The listening session will be held in the Holy Family Room at St Isaac Jogues. We want to ensure that people who make the effort to attend this meeting have opportunities to share and be heard. If you were unable to attend the November event, or simply want to hear what the Archdiocese is doing about this issue, please plan to attend at St. Isaac in Niles. Meet in the St Norbert parking lot at 6:15 pm to leave at 6:30 pm if you want to carpool. We need to find strength in one another s faith and love for our church when these headlines are so disheartening. Fr. Bob Save the Date! Women s Retreat All women of the Catholic Community of Northbrook are warmly invited to attend the retreat led by Fr. Jeff Putthoff, SJ at Bellarmine Jesuit Retreat House in tranquil Barrington, Illinois during the weekend of April 5 7. Finding our Wholeness will use Ignatian contemplation to discover the unique holiness we find in our wholeness in Jesus. Visit or call to register. Space is limited, so sign up today! Please contact Cheryl Kadleck at chkadleck@gmail.com or for more information. Sharing Ministry Restocking the grocery items in the Sharing pantry is our #1 priority right now. Winter is a difficult time for many of our clients, so please think of them when you are shopping for groceries. The clients of our food pantries also enjoy receiving both full- and travel-size toiletries shampoos and conditioners, body washes, body lotions (especially, at this time of year, creams and lotions for dry skin), mouth washes, hand creams and lotions, etc. For many patrons of the pantries, these are luxury items that can help dispel the winter doldrums. Your support is deeply appreciated. If not us, who? If not now, when?

Cost: $ (Assistance available if needed) Dear Friend, I am inviting you to attend a very important event for men happening for the Catholic Community of Northbrook in November. I say for the Catholic Community of Northbrook because while your presence and participation are necessary and vital, the real winner is the parish of St. Norbert and Our Lady of the Brook. The event is Welcome, formerly CRHP 2.0, which occurs on the weekend of March 2 & 3 at Our Lady of the Brook. My experience in other parishes has been that when men and women experience these weekends, parishes come alive in a way they have not been before. I have seen it happen in three parishes and there is only one reason it cannot happen here--if we say no. Several men in our Parish have previously experienced a CRHP weekend and they want to pass it on to you. In the past, I have made a personal money back guarantee to all attendees that you will enjoy the weekend. If you do not find it fulfilling, I will personally pay for your weekend. What is necessary from you is an openness to the weekend---it is like a retreat but different and a willingness to give yourself a Saturday and Sunday to the Lord. Having seen what this weekend can do for individuals and for parishes, please consider it and be a part of a wonderful experience. To reserve a spot, please contact Dev Kennedy at DevKennedy@stnorbertparish.org. Yours in Christ, Fr. 10 The Catholic Community of Northbrook Northbrook, Illinois 10 Please Make Your Gift to the 2019 Annual Catholic Appeal Come, Follow Me and share the Word During the last few weeks, many parish families received a letter from Cardinal Cupich requesting your participation in pledging to the 2019 Annual Catholic Appeal. We ask that you respond as generously as possible. The Appeal supports both Parish and Archdiocesan ministries, and funds services that are of great help here in our Parish. For example, Appeal funds this year will be used in part to renovate/update the rectory living quarters where Fr. Bob, Fr. Dan & Fr. Dunn reside. Some areas haven t been updated in decades! This year, the theme of the Appeal is Come, Follow Me and share the Word. We have all received God s love. By financially supporting the ministries and services funded by the Annual Catholic Appeal, we help to extend God s love to many, many others. As you review the mailing from Cardinal Cupich, take note of those services that directly support the work of our parish and please give generously. When our parish reaches its goal of $99, in paid pledges, all additional funds contributed will be returned to us for use in our Parish. Chili Supper Success!
