PRAYER OVER THE GIFTS God of grace, you have freed us from our sins and made us a kingdom in your Son Jesus Christ our Lord. Accept all we offer you this day, and strengthen us in the new life you have given us, through Jesus Christ our Lord. APRIL 15,

6 PRAYER AFTER COMMUNION Father, we have seen with our eyes and touched with our hands the bread of life. Strengthen our faith that we may grow in love for you and for each other; through Jesus Christ the risen Lord. A READING FROM THE BOOK OF ACTS Now the whole group of those who believed were of one heart and soul, and no one claimed private ownership of any possessions, but everything they owned was held in common. With great power the apostles gave their testimony to the resurrection of the Lord Jesus, and great grace was upon them all. There was not a needy person among them, for as many as owned lands or houses sold them and brought the proceeds of what was sold. They laid it at the apostles' feet, and it was distributed to each as any had need. ACTS 4:32-35 PSALM REFRAIN How good it for all is to live together in unity. Oh, how good and pleasant it is, when brethren live together in unity! It is like fine oil upon the head that runs down upon the beard, Upon the beard of Aaron, and runs down upon the collar of his robe. R It is like the dew of Hermon that falls upon the hills of Zion. For there the Lord has ordained the blessing: life for evermore. R PSALM 133 A READING FROM THE FIRST LETTER OF JOHN We declare to you what was from the beginning, what we have heard, what we have seen with our eyes, what we have looked at and touched with our hands, concerning the word of life - this life was revealed, and we have seen it and testify to it, and declare to you the eternal life that was with the Father and was revealed to us - we declare to you what we have seen and heard so that you also may have fellowship with us; and truly our fellowship is with the Father and with his Son Jesus Christ. We are writing these things so that our joy APRIL 15, 2012 may be complete. This is the message we have heard from him and proclaim to you, that God is light and in him there is no darkness at all. If we say that we have fellowship with him while we are walking in darkness, we lie and do not do what is true; but if we walk in the light as he himself is in the light, we have fellowship with one another, and the blood of Jesus his Son cleanses us from all sin. If we say that we have no sin, we deceive ourselves, and the truth is not in us. If we confess our sins, he who is faithful and just will forgive us our sins and cleanse us from all unrighteousness. If we say that we have not sinned, we make him a liar, and his word is not in us. My little children, I am writing these things to you so that you may not sin. But if anyone does sin, we have an advocate with the Father, Jesus Christ the righteous; and he is the atoning sacrifice for our sins, and not for ours only but also for the sins of the whole world. 1 JOHN 1:1-2:2 THE HOLY GOSPEL OF OUR LORD JESUS CHRIST ACCORDING TO JOHN When it was evening on that day, the first day of the week, and the doors of the house where the disciples had met were locked for fear of the Jews, Jesus came and stood among them and said, "Peace be with you." After he said this, he showed them his hands and his side. Then the disciples rejoiced when they saw the Lord. Jesus said to them again, "Peace be with you. As the Father has sent me, so I send you." When he had said this, he breathed on them and said to them, "Receive the Holy Spirit. If you forgive the sins of any, they are forgiven them; if you retain the sins of any, they are retained." But Thomas (who was called the Twin), one of the twelve, was not with them when Jesus came. So the other disciples told him, "We have seen the Lord." But he said to them, "Unless I see the mark of the nails in his hands, and put my finger in the mark of the nails and my hand in his side, I will not believe." A week later his disciples were again in the house, 6

7 and Thomas was with them. Although the doors were shut, Jesus came and stood among them and said, "Peace be with you." Then he said to Thomas, "Put your finger here and see my hands. Reach out your hand and put it in my side. Do not doubt but believe." Thomas answered him, "My Lord and my God!" Jesus said to him, "Have you believed because you have seen me? Blessed are those who have not seen and yet have come to believe." Now Jesus did many other signs in the presence of his disciples, which are not written in this book. But these are written so that you may come to believe that Jesus is the Messiah, the Son of God, and that through believing you may have life in his name. JOHN 20:19-31 APRIL 15, 2012 This Morning s Music Not much is known about Henry Loosemore, the composer of this morning s introit. He was organist of King s College, Cambridge, from 1627 until his death in 1670, where he composed service music and at least 30 anthems. For many years, O Lord, Increase My Faith, had been erroneously attributed to Orlando Gibbons but most musicologists now recognize Loosemore as its source. In any event, it is one of the most quintessentially Anglican anthems and a perfect prayer which acknowledges like Thomas our struggle with doubt and disbelief. I well remember a conversation with Alec Tilley some years ago, post service in our former Diocesan Centre. We were speaking of quality texts and we both agreed that Thomas Cranmer s Collect for Purity was a personal favorite. Some weeks later, Alec presented the choir with today s Communio. It immediately joined our list of Preferred pieces. There are so many things to focus attention on: the gentle undulation of the inner parts in the phrase by the inspiration of thy Holy Spirit - suggesting the comforting, enveloping wings of that presence; the falling seventh at the end of that we may perfectly love thee - perhaps suggesting that our love is less perfect than we may hope it to be; and the confident crescendo of through Jesus Christ, our Lord indicating, once again, our resolve to keep trying. 8 Our service concludes with Tilley s An Irish Blessing written for and dedicated to his Schola Cantorum choir at the former Queen Elizabeth High School. Note the harmonies and the alterations in dynamics and tempi of and until we meet again. Tilley, both a member of the Cathedral s Congregational Council (and even more importantly from my standpoint) the Cathedral Choir, continues to contribute quality anthems, canticles, and benedictions since his arrival here some years ago. I am delighted he will be conducting the choir in both these works. Finally, our offertory hymn today, Nearer, My God, to Thee, was, according to legend, played by the musicians as the Titanic sank beneath the waves 100 years ago today. Stephen Pedersen, in a column in the Chronicle-Herald earlier this week pointed out that the tune used for this hymn is not the one traditionally sung in North America. He suggested two others: PROPRIOR DEO by Sir Arthur Sullivan and HORBURY by John Bacchus Dykes, both of which will be played as part of the prelude music before this morning s service. APRIL 15,

BULLETIN NOTICES From the PWRDF Supporting Midwives, Saving Mothers The mission of Kinal Antzetik, a PWRDF partner working in the Mexican states of Guerrero, Oaxaca, and Chiapas, is to improve the lives of Indigenous women and men in Mexico. One of the primary ways Kinal works to achieve this goal is by supporting parteras, traditional midwives who for generations have been attending women in Indigenous communities as they safely deliver their children. Supporting midwives and promoting health and gender awareness in Indigenous communities is part of Kinal s strategy for helping Mexico to lower its maternal death rate from 89 per 100,000 in 1990 to 27.3 per 100,000 by Kinal, with support from PWRDF and the National Commission for Development of Indigenous Communities in Mexico, has developed a training program for midwives and community health promoters. The program trains midwives and others in both traditional and technical aspects of women s health, gender issues, the importance of working with local health authorities, and more. Adelaida Leonides was one of the 35 participants in the program. Her daughter accompanied her to the training modules as Adelaida cannot read and needed help with writing. Kinal has designed the training materials knowing that many midwives like Adelaida with decades of experience are illiterate. Illustrations and symbols are prevalent in the teaching materials, and many of the activities during the training modules involve art, drama, and story-telling rather than note-taking. Adelaida puts her training to work at the Indigenous Women s House (CAMI) in San Luis Acatlan, Guerrero State, Mexico. CAMI serves as a delivery centre, teaching site, health clinic, and social hub for Indigenous women in the region. It is often the destination for women to get advice and check-ups throughout pregnancy, as well as when they are due to deliver. If the delivery is high risk, Adelaida encourages the 12

12 mother to visit the local hospital, and volunteers to accompany her on the journey. Adelaida learned to be a midwife from her mother, but has had that traditional knowledge enhanced by the training provided by Kinal. Now I m very careful to wear gloves during delivery, she said. The training has also helped me in teaching the community how to avoid maternal mortality. From the National Church Your song could go global Praise songs, hymns, and simple refrains are all acceptable submissions for the Week of Prayer for Christian Unity. - By Peter Hummers A Canadian writing team preparing materials for the 2014 Week of Prayer for Christian Unity is seeking original music compositions. If chosen, your song could be sung around the world for this important ecumenical event. The team seeks songs suitable for congregations and with words in French or English ideally both. They can be hymns, praise choruses or shorter songs and must speak to the 2014 theme "Has Christ Been Divided?" based on 1 Corinthians 1:1-17. "We thought the music would be an interesting addition," said the Rev. Amanda Currie, a member of the Canadian writing team and a Presbyterian minister in Saskatoon. "It would add to the music already available for celebrating Chrisitan unity and praying for that together." Every year a different international team is chosen to develop resources for the eight days of prayer, celebrated in January. The resource package includes a worship service, a theological reflection, and a description of the ecumenical context in Canada. Songs are optional and have not been included in recent yearly packages. Once the national team develops the week's resources, they are reviewed by the international coordinating body, composed of representatives from the World Council of Churches and the Vatican. Materials are then sent out to churches worldwide and are adapted to the local context; the Canadian Council of Churches does this in Canada. Since the chosen song will be distributed internationally in this resource package, the composer must set up a copyright that will enable free use in a variety of worship and prayer gatherings. Ms. Currie said that the Canadian writing team may chose to include several worthy musical submissions. The song will be available for ecumenical celebrations beyond the designated week. Every year, Canadian Anglicans mark the Week of Prayer for Christian Unity by joining other Christians in ecumenical services, cooperative mission or evangelism work, and pulpit exchanges. The Week of Prayer for Christian Unity began in 1908 and is one of the oldest ecumenical activities. It predates the 1948 creation of the World Council of Churches and all the Anglican Church of Canada's bilateral dialogues. Songs may also be submitted by mail: St. Andrew's Presbyterian Church 436 Spadina Crescent East Saskatoon, Sask. S7K 3G6 BULLETIN NOTICES 12
