5 Statement by the Canadian Conference of Catholic Bishops: Pope John Paul II will be Beatified The Canadian conference of Catholic Bishops welcomes the announcement today by the Holy Father that Pope John Paul II will be beatified later this year on May 1. Pope John Paul II left a major mark on the Church and on the world. His vision and energy were a continuation of the Second Vatican Council. His Encyclicals and other writings are a lasting source of inspiration and teaching. The impact of his magnetic personality remains at the centre of many happy memories. He continues to attract worldwide attention, not only in the number of pilgrims who visit his tomb each year, but in international celebrations such as World Youth Day which he founded 26 years ago. With his upcoming beatification, Pope John Paul II remains a sign and instrument of God s Providence, and a contemporary example of how Our Lord raises up shepherds and leaders for his flock. 6 The Liturgy of the Presanctified Gifts is a typical lenten service. Already in the first centuries there was a custom during the Forty Days Fast to omit the celebration of the Divine Liturgy because, at that time, it was still linked with meal, that is the love banquet, and this was not in keeping with the spirit of fasting. Furthermore, the Divine Liturgy was regarded as a joyful mystery; for this reason, its celebration was limited to Saturday and Sunday. The "Liturgy of the Presanctified Gifts" is a special form of the Liturgy celebrated during weekdays of Lent -- typically on Wednesday and Friday evenings. In this Liturgy, the Eucharistic Gifts are pre-sanctified (i.e. the Eucharist is consecrated beforehand at Divine Liturgy on a day before). Hence the name Presanctified Gifts. It is comprised of three sections: Vespers; Liturgy of the Catechumens; and the Holy Communion. During the Lent we will have this Liturgy on Fridays at 7:00 p.m. THANKS: The students and teachers from Miller's Ukrainian Program had a wonderful visit to St. Basil's this week. On Tuesday and Wednesday afternoons, the students had a chance to learn more about the Liturgical year and our important feast days, the beautiful Iconostas and the importance of the Divine Liturgy from Father Mudri while they sat in awe in the beautiful church. Then, they walked over to St. Basil's Manor and were greeted with wonderful smiling faces and warm hearts. There, they sang some carols and gave a New Year's greeting and were rewarded with some wonderful treat bags from the Seniors. Afterwards, they came back to the church to do a follow-up activity about their experiences and learning, then went back to their home schools uplifted, more knowledgeable and fed (both physically and spiritually). Thank you to Father Mudri for the time he took to share with us and his kindness, and to the Seniors at the Manor for inviting us to sing. We will cherish these memories and our new learnings for a long time. Catholic Engaged Encounter Weekend will be held at St. Peter's Abbey in Muenster.
