2 FROM THE PASTOR S PEN WONDERFUL That s how I would describe the past four years serving as pastor of Sacred Heart parish. However, that parish along with Saint Philip the Apostle parish has now morphed into the new Divine Mercy parish. As of July 1, we are a new reality (no matter how much of the old still persists in each place). That new parish requires a new pastor. I see nothing but wonderful as I look ahead. Yes, there will be challenges. There are challenges that come with any substantial change. And we will change. We have to. By any reckoning, by any calculus whatsoever, you d have to come to the conclusion that if our Catholic parishes simply maintain what is, we will eventually go under. Children who spend eight years in a Catholic grammar school (and who continue on with Catholic education) and children who spend eight years in a religious education program do not end up practicing the faith, at least not how it s been practiced in the past. THE CHALLENGE AHEAD Gone are the days when most folks attend Sunday Mass each weekend. I read once that the norm for the United States is that Catholics attend Mass about once every eight weeks or so. The goal of Renew My Church is not necessarily restructuring into fewer parish units. The goal is to create vibrant Catholic parishes, each viable and strong, with a mission-oriented outlook where parishioners are working together to bring the good news of Jesus Christ to people everywhere. That, in turn, requires a real relationship with Jesus, where each of us is truly a practicing, striving, on-firewith-the Spirit disciple who takes seriously the command of Jesus to go and make others into disciples. Mere religious education, focusing on religion textbooks in classrooms and in sessions, won t engender the type of missionary discipleship required by the gospel. Those parents among us with children who are now adult Catholics, ask yourself if your adult children practice the faith as yourself do (or did). The largest religious group in the United States today are those who have opted out of the Catholic Church. MORE OF WONDERFUL We have an opportunity here. The whole point of Renew My Church is to seek out new ways of being and doing the faith that attract new members and grow us into a better future. As we look forward to how that might happen at Divine Mercy parish, we are preparing to pilot the Alpha program this Lent, we have started our first message series of Sunday homilies last Sunday and the next three Sundays, and we have established a Senior Leadership Team to assist in re-thinking and redoing who we are as a parish. I think the next handful of years are going to be very exciting as we work with the other parishes of our grouping to bring that gospel, that good news, to the North Shore and beyond. Will it be challenging? Yes. Will we have bumps in the road along the way? Yes. Nothing new there. Read the four gospel accounts in the New Testament. Jesus and the original disciples had a somewhat bumpy road which they traveled. In spite of the difficulties, indeed, in spite of the Cross, there was triumph: the Resurrection, the sending of the Spirit, the creation of the Church and the great mission to convert the world to Christ. I am very content and excited to be installed as the first pastor of Divine Mercy parish and look forward to working with all of you in bringing the gospel to life in and beyond our new parish. DID YOU KNOW? The book Divine Renovation: Bringing Your Parish from Maintenance to Mission contains the general vision that we are pursuing as we continue to seek renewal and revitalization. Its author, Father James Mallon, writes about secularization and other changes in the world around us, saying: The game may have changed at halftime, but we are still too often insisting on playing the new game according to the rules of the past. We have witnessed in the last 50 years the most accelerated social change in human history, yet in the world of our churches, we insist on pastoral methodologies that presume bygone ideal cultures of the past. What results is an experience of being trapped. Being caught between an experience of a call and desire for renewal and the weight of Church culture towards maintaining the status quo is painful. Those in pastoral leadership know that our methods no longer work, yet are bound by layers of expectations that demand the continuation of the old, while, at the same time, having to juggle new realities (Divine Renovation, Fr. James Mallon, Twenty- Third Publications, 2014, Novalis Publishing, Inc., p. 53).

WEEKLY SCRIPTURE REFLECTION GROUP The group will NOT meet on Monday, December 3rd. We will resume next week, December 10th at the Sacred Heart Parish Offices. NEW LECTOR WORKBOOKS AVAILABLE If you are a lector for either Sacred Heart or St. Philip, please pick up your new Lector Workbook for the coming Liturgical Year. Sacred Heart lectors can find them in the Sacristy. St. Philip the Apostle lectors can find them in the lobby of the Church. If you are interested in becoming a lector for either worship site, please contact the parish office. EVERYDAY STEWARDSHIP: A LOOK AT THE SCRIPTURES But when these signs begin to happen, stand erect and raise your heads because your redemption is at hand. (LUKE 21:28) We celebrate Advent each year in preparation of the birth of Jesus, His first coming, as we await his second coming. In this Advent season, use the sacrament of Reconciliation to strengthen your relationship with Jesus. It s never too late. FIRST FRIDAY: DAY OF ADORATION A Day of Adoration will be held at St. Philip on the First Friday of December (7th). It will begin after the 8 a.m. Mass with 1st Friday prayers to the Sacred Heart of Jesus and the sorrowful mysteries of the rosary. Quiet time in the presence of the Blessed Sacrament in Exposition will continue from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Our Lord will be waiting for us to adore, praise and thank Him for His many blessings and also to listen to our concerns for our families, friends, Church, country and the world. If we are silent, we may even hear Him respond to us in the peace and quiet of our hearts. The Day of Adoration will conclude with the regular Holy Hour scheduled for every Friday from 3-4 p.m. Feel free to drop in for even a short visit with Our Lord. Come when you can. Leave when you must. Enjoy the time with our Lord. CHILDREN S LITURGY AT SACRED HEART CHURCH What is it? Children s Liturgy is actually the Liturgy of the Word for children. The Sunday scripture readings are proclaimed and explained on a level the children can understand and enjoy. Children s Liturgy takes place at our 10:30 am Sunday Mass from September through May (see schedule below). Any child in prekindergarten through 3 rd grade is encouraged to join us. Parents are also welcome especially if your child is a little nervous with new experiences. No registration is necessary. What exactly do they do? Right after the opening prayer, the celebrant will invite the children to come forward for a blessing and the adult leader will lead them to the fireplace room in the parish office. After a brief welcome, they listen to the First Reading proclaimed from the Children s Lectionary. Next, the Gospel is proclaimed by one of the adult leaders. An age-appropriate reflection on the Word is shared by the leader through stories, discussions, or pictures - whatever the leader finds most appropriate to conveying the meaning of the scriptures. The children are then invited to share their own thoughts and ideas. The children return to the church after the Prayers of the Faithful to celebrate the Liturgy of the Eucharist with the entire community. Please encourage your child/ren to participate & enjoy the Liturgy of the Word at their level of understanding. Upcoming dates: December 2, 9, 16; January 6, 13, 20, 27. Questions? Contact Patty Sanfilippo at psanfilippo1380@gmail.com or call the Religious Education Office at

5 SACRED HEART SCHOOL LOOK WHAT S HAPPENING AT SACRED HEART SCHOOL! REGISTRATION for the school year for PS, JK and K begins at 7:30am on Monday, December 3 rd. If you have a child who will be 3 or 4 years old by September 1 st, 2019, and wish to enroll them in our 3 year old preschool or our JK extended day program you will need to fill out a Registration form. If you have a child who will be 5 by September 1, 2019, and wish to enroll them in our full day kindergarten program, you will also need to fill out a registration form. All new students to Sacred Heart require a registration form and registration fee, as well as the child s Baptismal Certificate (if applicable) and Birth Certificate. The day before Thanksgiving, our Sacred Heart School kindergarteners celebrated their study of the Wampanoag Native Americans, who resided in New England. They made outfits and decorated them using Native American symbols, played music on handmade drums and enjoyed Indian fried bread with butter and honey. Everyone learned a lot about all the contributions made by the Wampanoag nation to the Pilgrims. The first grade went on a field trip last Tuesday to the Morton Arboretum. The day furthered the student's knowledge of trees and bugs by attending the It s Fall and Bugs Abound programs. A Morton Arboretum volunteer led the class through the woods looking for types of vegetation and signs of animal life. The outdoor classroom allowed the students a hands-on experience with the natural world around them unlike any other. If your child is presently at Sacred Heart School and is simply moving up a grade, there is a re-registration form to fill out, and you will be guaranteed a spot for next year. Preschool, Junior Kindergarten and new kindergarten spots are first come first serve so don t delay turning in your registration form to the office. If you have any questions please contact the school office. If you missed our open houses and still would like to visit the school, please call us (847) , or us at kfink@shwschool.org or adanstrom@shwschool.org and we will be happy to set up an appointment and tour for you! Recently a group of Sacred Heart students had the opportunity to attend Loyola Academy Choir Festival. Over 190 students from area catholic schools attended and learned what it is like to be apart of the choir family. The students were a little shy at first but with a few icebreaker activities they easily warmed up and made some friends from other schools. We then learned solfege along with two other songs throughout the day. Mr. Beagle did an amazing job organizing this event and it was great to see our little school be apart of something so special. Catholic Charities annual Celebration of Giving is a concerted effort to collect holiday gifts for children and families served by Catholic Charities wide array of programs. This year we ve been asked to concentrate on gifts for babies (newborn to 3 yrs) and teens (12-17 yrs). The Christmas gift card collection is a vital aspect of our outreach to the St. Benedict the African community. St. Benedict is the sharing parish of St. Philip. The gift cards help the parish provide food and gas as need arises throughout the year. Whole Foods, Jewel, McDonalds, Target, Walgreens and gas cards are all good options. Cash donations are always welcome as well. Gift cards for both Catholic Charities and St. Benedict the African can be found on the Giving Tree in the Church Vestibule. Last Wednesday, the day before Thanksgiving, dozens of Divine Mercy parishioners put their faith into action by serving our friends at the St. Columbanus Food Pantry. Volunteers helped to pack produce and distribute all kinds of food, including 750 turkeys and hundreds of winter coats! In addition, our Sacred Heart Religious Ed families raised $947 towards the purchase of those turkeys. Many thanks to all of you! God bless the good work that Fr. Matt O Donnell and Preston Mahone do with the Food Pantry to feed the 500 families in their community each week! Many Thanks
