1 SECOND SUNDAY IN LENT March 12, 2017 Thought for Individual Meditation Worship is a thirsty land crying out for rain...a candle in the act of being kindled...a drop in quest of the ocean...a voice in the night calling for help...a soul standing in awe before the mystery of the universe...a time that flows into eternity...a person seeking to climb the altar stairs to God. Dwight Bradley Fort Street Presbyterian Church 631 W. Fort Street Detroit, MI Phone (313)

2 Gathering the Community PRELUDES Prelude on Rhosymedre (Lovely) Ralph Vaughan Williams Marilyn Biery, Music Director/Organist WELCOME AND ANNOUNCEMENTS Dr. Bob Agnew CALL TO WORSHIP Tom Edwards Out of the fullness of the lives God has given us, we gather in response to God's call to come and worship. We come to celebrate with thanksgiving the saving acts of Jesus the Christ, who touches us with healing, reconciles us to God and one another, shapes us as servants, and equips us for ministry. Let us make a joyful noise to the Lord and worship the Lord with gladness. The Lord is good. God's steadfast love endures forever, and God s faithfulness to all generations. (Psalm 100:1-2a, 5) I was glad when they said to me, Let us go to the house of the Lord! (Psalm 122:1) *HYMN # 401 Gather Us In vs. 1-3 GATHER US IN *LITANY OF CONFESSION Tom Edwards Lent is for remembrance of Christ s sufferings, temptations and death, and for discovering afresh the significance of these. It is a divine call for individual spiritual examination, renewal, and dedication. Speak to us, O God, in this season of penitence and hear our prayers. Lent is an agonizing experience for earnest Christians because it requires us to bare our whole selves before God and to confess the sin which colors our lives. In this season of penitence, O God, forgive our sins. We are made uncomfortable in the presence of Christ, because we are caught short by our reflection in the mirror of His matchless life. His utter trust confronts our lack of certainty and our feet of clay. In this season of penitence, O God, forgive our sins. Through worship lead us from waywardness to faithfulness, rejoicing in your goodness and centering on your love and grace. *SILENT CONFESSION *THE ASSURANCE OF PARDON *RESPONSE SONG #447 We Are Forgiven WE ARE FORGIVEN *SHARING THE PEACE Tom Edwards The Peace of the Living Christ be with you. And also with you. 2

5 About today s music: British composer Ralph Vaughan Williams ( ) wrote the lovely motet O Taste and See for the coronation of Queen Elizabeth II in Many of Vaughan Williams s hymn tunes and harmonizations are found in our hymnal, including SINE NOMINE (For All the Saints), hymn 326. For a complete list, see the back of the hymnal, page 998, in the Index of Authors, Composers, and Sources. Vaughan Williams didn t write much for organ; today s prelude is based on the tune RHOSYMEDRE (not found in our hymnal). The great German composer Johannes Brahms ( ) didn t write much organ music either, but his eleven chorale preludes are essential literature for every organist, and the postlude is one of two settings Brahms did of the Passion Chorale (hymn 221).
