1 TWENTY-SECOND SUNDAY AFTER PENTECOST November 5, 2017 God of power and presence, you are the midwife of our lives, always drawing us on to be born again, encouraging, exhorting, calming, containing even death. You pull us, kicking, into life, breathe spirit into us. We thank you for the gift in our breath, the love that we make, the hope that we cherish, the grace that encompasses our darkest day. In smallness and splendor, in storm and serenity, we celebrate your care and creativity. We rest in you, as trustingly as any baby. Kathy Galloway Fort Street Presbyterian Church 631 W. 2 SERVICE FOR THE LORD S DAY 31st Sunday in Ordinary Time November 5, 2017 WE ASSEMBLE IN GOD S NAME PRELUDE Chorale, Minuet, Prayer, from Suite Gothique Léon Boëllmann WELCOME AND ANNOUNCEMENTS Pastor Anne Lange CALL TO WORSHIP O give thanks to the Lord, For God s steadfast love endures forever. When we are hungry and thirsty, God fills us with good things. When we are stuck or trapped, God delivers us from bondage. When we are sick and weary, God breathes in us new life. Let us remember God s ways And celebrate the steadfast love of God! Robb Sharrow *HYMN # 641 When in Our Music God is Glorified ENGELBERG *PRAYER OF CONFESSION Robb Sharrow Loving God, our journey through life is uncertain. We do not know what tomorrow may bring. We are fearful of what may come in our next stage of life. When we face a new challenge, we feel the urge to retreat. We go back to old ways of doing things, habits that we have been unable to break. We fall back into discouragement and despair. We return to actions that tear us down, and tear us apart. Forgive us, God, for not relying on You more closely. When the waters of life rise, and our ability to cross seems in peril, give us Your peace. Instill in us the strength to move forward through the Spirit who comforts and guides us. Amen. *DECLARATION OF GOD S FORGIVENESS Pastor Anne Hear the Good News In the name of Jesus Christ, we are forgiven! Thanks be to God. Alleluia! Amen. *RESPONSE SONG # 591 Halle, Halle, Hallelujah! HALLE, HALLE *SHARING OF CHRIST S PEACE Robb Sharrow Since God has forgiven us in Christ, we too should forgive one another. The Peace of the Lord Jesus Christ be with you all. And also with you. (Exchange signs of Christ s peace with those worshipping with you.) 2

The Church is the body of Christ. Christ gives to the Church all the gifts necessary to be his body. How is the church a community of faith? The church entrusts itself to God alone, even at the risk of losing its life. How is the church a community of hope? The church rejoices in the sure and certain knowledge that, in Christ, God is making a new creation. How is the church a community of love? The church is where sin is forgiven, reconciliation is accomplished, and the dividing walls of hostility are torn down. How is the church a community of witness? The Church points beyond itself to the good news of God s transforming grace in Christ Jesus its Lord. Amen. The Jordan River is a frequent subject of folk, gospel and spiritual music, as crossing over it symbolized freedom, either by reaching the promised land, by escaping slavery, or by one s final crossing from life to death. David Haas (b. 1957) is a well-known composer of music for the church. Haas was born in Michigan and attended Central Michigan University. He lives in Eagan, Minnesota.
