You pull us, kicking, into life, breathe spirit into us. We thank you for the gift in our breath, the love that we make, the hope that we cherish, the grace that encompasses our darkest day. We fall back into discouragement and despair. We return to actions that tear us down, and tear us apart. Forgive us, God, for not relying on You more closely. When the waters of life rise, and our ability to cross seems in peril, give us Your peace. Instill in us the strength to move forward through the Spirit who comforts and guides us. The Church is the body of Christ. Christ gives to the Church all the gifts necessary to be his body. How is the church a community of faith? The church entrusts itself to God alone, even at the risk of losing its life. How is the church a community of hope? The church rejoices in the sure and certain knowledge that, in Christ, God is making a new creation. How is the church a community of love? The church is where sin is forgiven, reconciliation is accomplished, and the dividing walls of hostility are torn down. How is the church a community of witness? The Church points beyond itself to the good news of God s transforming grace in Christ Jesus its Lord. Amen. About the Music: Léon Boëllmann ( ) was a French composer who wrote a small number of works for organ, of which today s Suite Gothique (1895) is still frequently played, particularly the Toccata. The Jordan River is a frequent subject of folk, gospel and spiritual music, as crossing over it symbolized freedom, either by reaching the promised land, by escaping slavery, or by one s final crossing from life to death. David Haas (b. 1957) is a well-known composer of music for the church. Haas was born in Michigan and attended Central Michigan University. He lives in Eagan, Minnesota. 7 Fort Street News MISSION STATEMENT Fort Street Presbyterian Church is an oasis in an urban environment, building a caring Christian community where diversity is celebrated and developing programs that minister to metropolitan Detroit and the world beyond. THANKSGIVING FOOD BASKET The Deacons are conducting a food drive in preparation for our annual Thanksgiving Food Basket donations on November 20. Between 7:30am-8:00am women and elderly guests may shower. They may also receive a hygiene kit and use the clothing bank once a month. Between 9:00am 10:00am, men may shower. They may also get a hygiene kit and use the clothing bank monthly. Guests seeking clothing and hygiene kits must present valid identification. Between 9 and 11am a full hot meal is served. Volunteers are welcome. 7 A Reminder on Parking For security purposes, we advise you to park in the parking lot next to the church on Sunday mornings. This lot is monitored by one of our parking attendants. We are not able to monitor cars parked on the street. As a general practice, we recommend that you please do not leave any valuables in your car. Thank you.
