SERVICE FOR THE LORD S DAY December 24, 2017 WE ASSEMBLE IN GOD S NAME PRELUDE Concerto Grosso Op 6 No. 8 Arcangelo Corelli Adagio; Allegro WELCOME AND ANNOUNCEMENTS LIGHTING OF THE ADVENT WREATH Pastor Anne Marie and Jerry We light candles as a sign of the coming light of Christ. Emmanuel God with us. Let us prepare the way of the Lord. Because Emmanuel is coming near. We light this candle in peace The peace that Jesus, our Savior, gives to the world. Let us prepare our hearts in love, Because Emmanuel is coming near. *HYMN 88 O Come, O Come Emmanuel VENI EMMANUEL Beth Brown In this season of promise, we confess that we are fearful of what your promises may bring. We are fearful of what we may lose when you come close to us. We give up our sense of control. We give up false appearances and self-deceptions. We have to journey to places we would never choose to go to on our own. God of promise, free us from our fears. Help us to let go of the things we cling to that get in the way of following you. Show your favor upon us to follow you simply, surely, and steadily. Strengthen us to be a light for others, in our thoughts, words, and actions. Amen. *PRAYER OF CONFESSION 2

PRELUDE 7:00PM Sinfonia from the Christmas Concerto Arcangelo Corelli I Wonder as I Wander John Jacob Niles I wonder as I wander, out under the sky, how Jesus the Savior did come for to die for poor on ry people like you and like I I wonder as I wander, out under the sky. When Mary birthed Jesus twas in a cow s stall, with wise men and farmers and shepherds and all. But high from God s heaven a star s light did fall, and the promise of ages it then did recall. If Jesus had wanted for any wee thing, a star in the sky or a bird on the wing, or all of God s angels in heaven for to sing, he surely could have it, cause he was the King. Mariä Wiegenlied Max Reger Amid the roses Mary sits and rocks her Jesus-child, while amid the treetops sighs the breeze so warm and mild. And soft and sweetly sings a bird upon the bough: Ah! baby, sleep, dear one, slumber now. Happy is your laughter, holy is your silent rest, lay your head in slumber, fondly on your mother s breast. Ah! baby, sleep, dear one, slumber now. Ave Maria da Caccini Vladimir Vavilov Greetings, Mary! O Holy Night Adolphe Adam O holy night! the stars are brightly shining; It is the night of our dear Savior's birth. Long lay the world in sin and error pining, Till he appeared and the soul felt its worth. A thrill of hope, the weary world rejoices, For yonder breaks a new and glorious morn! Fall on your knees! Oh, hear the angel voices! O night divine, O night when Christ was born; O night divine. Led by the light of faith serenely beaming, With glowing hearts by his cradle we stand. So led by light of a star sweetly gleaming, Here come the wise men from the Orient land. The King of Kings lay thus in lowly manger; In all our trials born to be our Friend He knows our need, our weakness is no stranger, Behold your King! Before him lowly bend! Truly he taught us to love one another; His law is love and his gospel is peace. Chains shall he break for the slave is our brother, And in his name all oppression shall cease. Sweet hymns of joy in grateful chorus raise we; Let all within us praise his holy name. Christ is the Lord! O praise his name forever! His power and glory evermore proclaim! Still, Still, Still Arr. James Biery HYMN 123 It Came Upon the Midnight Clear CAROL All: It came upon the midnight clear, that glorious song of old, from angels bending near the earth, to touch their harps of gold: Peace on the earth, good will to all, from heaven s all-gracious King : the world in solemn stillness lay, to hear the angels sing. Still through the cloven skies they come, with peaceful wings unfurled, and still their heavenly music floats o er all the weary world: above its sad and lowly plains they bend on hovering wing, and ever o er its Babel sounds the blessed angels sing. Yet with the woes of sin and strife the world has suffered long; beneath the heavenly hymn have rolled two thousand years of wrong; and we at war on earth hear not the tidings that they bring; O, hush the noise and cease the strife to hear the angels sing! Choir: And you, beneath life s crushing load, whose forms are bending low, who toil along the climbing way with painful steps and slow, look now, for glad and golden hours come swiftly on the wing: O, rest beside the weary road, and hear the angels sing. All: For lo, the days are hastening on, by prophets seen of old, when with the ever-circling years shall come the time foretold, when peace shall over all the earth its ancient splendors fling, and the whole world give back the song which now the angels sing. Soloists: Leslie Douglass Mason, soprano; Isaac Garrigues-Cortelyou, tenor, Erika Thompson, mezzo-soprano; Instrumentalists: Yuri Popowycz, Natalie Frakes, Katie Williams, Tom Sullivan 2

SERVICE - 7:30PM THE LIGHT OF THE HOPE WELCOME *HYMN 133 O Come, All Ye Faithful ADESTE FIDELES O come, all ye faithful, joyful and triumphant; O come ye; O come ye to Bethlehem! Come, and behold him, born the King of angels! O come, let us adore him; O come, let us adore him; O come, let us adore him, Christ, the Lord! True God from true God, Light from light eternal, born of a virgin, a mortal he comes; very God, begotten, not created! O come, let us adore him; O come, let us adore him; O come, let us adore him, Christ, the Lord! Sing, choirs of angels; sing in exultation; sing, all ye citizens of heaven above! Glory to God, all glory in the highest! O come, let us adore him; O come, let us adore him; O come, let us adore him, Christ, the Lord! Yea, Lord, we greet thee, born this happy morning; Jesus, to thee be all glory given; Word of the Father, now in flesh appearing! O come, let us adore him; O come, let us adore him; O come, let us adore him, Christ, the Lord! LIGHTING OF THE CHRIST CANDLE Good news, you who are weary and heavy burdened! Sing for great joy, you who are tired and shackled with pain! For the Lord, our Redeemer, has come! We light the Christ candle as a sign to the world that today, in the City of David, a Savior is born, who is Christ the Lord. We no longer have to fear the darkness for our Light has come. That light that enlightens all people has broken into our world. And the world will never be the same again. Alleluia! Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord. Amen. CONFESSION AND ASSURANCE OF PARDON When we allow darkness to overcome the light, forgive us, Lord. When we reduce Christmas to plastic and tinsel, have mercy on us, Father. When hardness of heart keeps us from seeing and hearing and touching the needs of others, let your grace consume us, O God. When the wars around us are of no concern, forgive us, Lord, and move us to compassion for those who suffer. When our caring is not extended to action, move us to seek justice for our brothers and sisters. We come to confess our sinfulness before you and before each other. Remove all barriers that divide us, and let there be no obstacle to our love for you and for one another. Amen. All pray in silence. People of God, through the coming of Jesus Christ, whose birth we celebrate, the Lord has comforted and redeemed us! Recall the words of the angels: Good news Great joy All people *Please rise in body, mind, or spirit. 3

In Christ we receive the salvation of our God. In the name of Jesus Christ, you are forgiven. In the name of Jesus Christ, you are forgiven. Glory to God in the highest! *HYMN 145 What Child Is This GREENSLEEVES What child is this, who, laid to rest, on Mary s lap is sleeping? Whom angels greet with anthems sweet while shepherds watch are keeping? This, this is Christ the King, whom shepherds guard and angels sing; haste, haste to bring him laud, the babe, the son of Mary! Why lies he in such mean estate where ox and ass are feeding? Good Christian, fear; for sinners here the silent Word is pleading. Nails, spear, shall pierce him through; the cross be borne for me, for you. Hail, hail, the Word made flesh, the babe, the son of Mary! So bring him incense, gold, and myrrh; come, one and all, to own him. The King of kings salvation brings; let loving hearts enthrone him. Raise, raise the song on high. The virgin sings her lullaby. Joy, joy, for Christ is born, the babe, the son of Mary! AT THE MANGER: MARY SCRIPTURE Luke 1:26-35 Eric Lange *HYMN 121 O Little Town of Bethlehem ST. LOUIS O little town of Bethlehem, how still we see thee lie! Above thy deep and dreamless sleep the silent stars go by. Yet in thy dark streets shineth the everlasting light; the hopes and fears of all the years are met in thee tonight. For Christ is born of Mary and, gathered all above, while mortals sleep, the angels keep their watch of wondering love. O morning stars, together proclaim the holy birth, and praises sing to God the king, and peace to all on earth. How silently, how silently, the wondrous gift is given! So God imparts to human hearts the blessings of his heaven. No ear may hear his coming, but in this world of sin, where meek souls will receive him, still the dear Christ enters in. O holy child of Bethlehem, descend to us, we pray; cast out our sin and enter in; be born in us today. We hear the Christmas angels the great glad tidings tell; O come to us; abide with us, our Lord Emmanuel! 4

OFFERING OFFERTORY Jesus, Tiny Child James Biery Gently, Mary laid her child in the humble manger, softly cradling Jesus head, shielding him from danger. Jesus, may we hold your head? Rock you in your manger bed? Whispering lightly, Lullaby, Jesus, tiny child. 5

Proudly Joseph stood above, guarding baby, mother; watched for evil in the night, knowing it would hover. Jesus, may we watch your bed? May we stand in Joseph s stead? Singing lightly, Lullaby, Jesus, holy child. Softly shepherds came to see Jesus Christ, the Savior; knowing that he came to free all from death and sorrow. Jesus, may we see your face?
