1 9th Sunday after Pentecost July 26, 2015 Meditation before Worship We shall steer safely through every storm, so long as our heart is right, our intention fervent, our courage steadfast, and our trust fixed on God. St. Francis De Sales Fort Street Presbyterian Church 631 W. Fort Street Detroit, MI Phone (313)

2 Gathering the Community PRELUDE WELCOME Ray Staroscik Organist Dr. Bob Agnew CALL TO WORSHIP (Bold print indicates congregation s participation) Hedi Mulford God cares for us and all creation, not from a distance, but as an ever-active, loving presence. We pray believing we are heard, and that that God responds in love even before we ask. The storms of life cannot destroy our Savior's "Peace, be still." The God, who reminds us who we are in Christ, offers forgiveness for the past, strength for the present, and hope for the future. Let us worship the God mercy and kindness whose steadfast care endures forever. Great is the Lord and greatly to be praised. *HYMN # 463 (GTG) How Firm a Foundation (Vs. 1-3) This morning all hymns and songs can be found in the purple Glory to God (GTG) hymnals. We have limited copies of Glory to God, so they are given to worshippers as they enter the sanctuary. If you did not receive one, please contact an usher. We would also appreciate if you would return this hymnal (GTG) to the Narthex as you leave worship. *PRAYER OF CONFESSION Hedi Mulford Gracious God, we come to you as we are; people who know times of trouble and times when we are afraid. Some of us may even be in the midst of a raging storm, crying out for an awareness of your presence. We acknowledge how much easier it is to have faith when things are going well. Forgive us when our faith is weak, and when we fail to call upon you and to believe that you are the Lord of life. As Jesus calmed the wind and waves, still within us turbulent storms and fears. Help us to remember we are not alone, to find courage and strength amid the dark clouds of life, and to rise above them though Him who is our peace, Jesus Christ our Lord. *SILENT CONFESSION *THE ASSURANCE OF PARDON *RESPONSE SONG # 616 (GTG) Our God Is an Awesome God Our God is an awesome God who reigns from heaven above with wisdom, power, and love; our God is an awesome God! *SHARING THE PEACE The Peace of the Living Christ be with you. And also with you. Hedi Mulford 2

3 THE WORD SPECIAL TIME WITH THE CHILDREN HYMN FOR ILLUMINATION # 626 (GTG) As the Deer As the deer pants for the water, so my soul longs after you. You alone are my heart s desire, and I long to worship you. You alone are my strength, my shield; to you alone may my spirit yield. You alone are my heart s desire, and I long to worship you. FIRST READING: Psalms 107:1, Hedi Mulford (p.529 in pew Bibles) The Word of the Lord. Thanks be to God ANTHEM Ray Staroscik SECOND READINGS: Mark 4:35-41; Isaiah 26:3-4 (pp.36-37, & 614 in pew Bibles) Dr. Bob Agnew The Word of the Lord. Thanks be to God SERMON CALM AT THE CENTER Dr. Bob Agnew SERMON TEXT: Mark 4:39 He woke up and rebuked the wind, and said to the sea, Peace! Be still! Then the wind ceased, and there was a dead calm. THE RESPONSE *HYMN # 686 (GTG) God of Our Life (Vs.1 & 3) *AFFIRMATION OF FAITH (From A Brief Statement of Faith ) Hedi Mulford We trust in Jesus Christ, fully human, fully God. We trust in God, whom Jesus called Abba, Father. We trust in God the Holy Spirit, everywhere the giver and renewer of life. In a broken and fearful world the Spirit gives us courage to pray without ceasing, to witness among all peoples to Christ as Lord and Savior, With believers in every time and place, we rejoice that nothing in life or in death can separate us from the love of God in Christ Jesus our Lord. PRAYERS OF THE PEOPLE 3

4 THE LORD S PRAYER Our Father who art in heaven, Hallowed be thy name. Thy kingdom come. Thy will be done on earth, as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread. And forgive us our debts, as we forgive our debtors. And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil: For thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory, for ever. Amen. OFFERING OF THE GIFTS OF THE PEOPLE OFFERTORY. *DOXOLOGY # 606 (GTG) Praise God, from Whom All Blessings Flow Praise God, from whom all blessings flow; Praise God, all creatures here below; Praise God above, ye heavenly host; Praise Father, Son, and Holy Ghost. Amen. Ray Staroscik *PRAYER OF DEDICATION Hedi Mulford *HYMN # 329 (GTG) God Is Our Refuge and Our Strength (Vs.1-2) *COMMISSION Go forth to stand fearlessly in the face of the storms of life. In stillness or in storm, we will not panic but will trust in God s power. Jesus, who journeys with us, promises to give us peace, not as world knows, a peace that passes all understanding. Because God hears, we are called to listen. Because God cares, we are called to care. Because God acts, we are commissioned to share in Christ s mission to the world and to proclaim His peace. *BENEDICTION Ray Staroscik *POSTLUDE (If you wish to do so, we invite you to sit quietly and enjoy the postlude as part of your worship.) Organist *Please rise in body, mind, or spirit. Thank you for gathering with us for worship this morning. Following worship, there will be a coffee hour in the small dining area. Please join us! 4
