1 TWENTIETH SUNDAY AFTER PENTECOST October 22, 2017 "One of the greatest barriers to connection is the cultural importance we place on "going it alone." Somehow we've come to equate success with not needing anyone. Many of us are willing to extend a helping hand, but we're very reluctant to reach out for help when we need it ourselves. It's as if we've divided the world into "those who offer help" and "those who need help." The truth is that we are both." Brené Brown Fort Street Presbyterian Church 631 W. 2 SERVICE FOR THE LORD S DAY Twentieth Sunday in Ordinary Time October 22, 2017 WE ASSEMBLE IN GOD S NAME PRELUDE Rhosymedre (Lovely) Ralph Vaughan Williams WELCOME AND ANNOUNCEMENTS CALL TO WORSHIP (from Psalm 99) Cindy Edwards Holy is the Lord our God. God reigns over all the earth. Holy is the Lord our God. God upholds justice and righteousness for all people. Holy is the Lord our God. God is faithful and answers the cries of the hurting. Let us worship God together. *HYMN # 645 Sing Praise to God Who Reigns Above MIT FREUDEN ZART *PRAYER OF CONFESSION Cindy Edwards Loving God, you have promised that you will never leave us nor forsake us. But we are lonely people. We fear being alone, and in our fear we hurt the people around us. God of Love, forgive us when we divide ourselves. God of Peace, forgive us when we act to hurt one another. God of Hope, comfort us when we feel like our loneliness is stronger than your presence. Strengthen us to move forward with Your presence all the days of our lives. *DECLARATION OF GOD S FORGIVENESS Hear the Good News In the name of Jesus Christ, we are forgiven! Thanks be to God. Alleluia! Amen. *RESPONSE SONG # 591 Halle, Halle, Hallelujah! HALLE, HALLE *SHARING OF CHRIST S PEACE Cindy Edwards Since God has forgiven us in Christ, we too should forgive one another. The Peace of the Lord Jesus Christ be with you all. And also with you. (Exchange signs of Christ s peace with those worshipping with you.) 2

3 WE LISTEN FOR GOD S WORD CHILDREN S MESSAGE Pastor Eric Lange PRAYER FOR ILLUMINATION EPISTLE LESSON 1 Thessalonians 1:1-10 (p. 191 in Pew Bibles) Cindy Edwards The Word of the Lord. Thanks be to God. ANTHEM River in Judea Marcus (lyrics), Feldman (music), arr. John Leavitt Oftentimes I dream of music, of the river that freely flows. And it sings a song sweeter than honey, one everybody knows. Late at night I hear it singing, then again when I wake at dawn. And it fills me up with hope and goodwill, the will to go on. There is a river in Judea that I heard of long ago, and it s a singing, ringing river that my soul cries out to know. I believe it keeps on travelin but it rests on the Sabbath day. And the time when it pauses in stillness, I almost hear it pray. When I m weary and downhearted, how I long for the song it sings, for the calm within its gentle blue, the peace that it brings. May the time not be too distant when we meet by the river shore. Til then dream of that wonderful day as we sing once more OLD TESTAMENT LESSON Exodus 33:12-23 (p. 9 in Pew Bibles) The Word of the Lord. Thanks be to God. SERMON THE PROMISE OF PRESENCE Pastor Eric Lange *HYMN # 840 When Peace like a River VILLE DU HAVRE *AFFIRMATION OF FAITH (A Brief Statement of Faith) Cindy Edwards With believers in every time and place, we rejoice that nothing in life or in death can separate us from the love of God in Christ Jesus our Lord. God is faithful, like a mother who will not forsake her nursing child, like a father who runs to welcome the prodigal home. In a broken and fearful world the Spirit gives us courage to pray without ceasing, to witness among all peoples to Christ as Lord and Savior, to unmask idolatries in Church and culture, to hear the voices of peoples long silenced, and to work with others for justice, freedom, and peace. Amen. 3

4 WE GIVE THANKS TO GOD SHARING CELEBRATIONS AND CONCERNS Microphone Available PRAYERS OF THE PEOPLE THE LORD S PRAYER Our Father who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name. For thine is the kingdom and the power and the glory, forever. Amen. OFFERING OF THE PLEDGES AND GIFTS OF THE PEOPLE OFFERTORY The Call Ralph Vaughan Williams Come, my Way, my Truth, my Life: such a way as gives us breath, such a truth as ends all strife, such a life as killeth death. Come, my Light, my Feast, my Strength: such a light as shows a feast, such a feast as mends in length, such a strength as makes his guest. Come, my Joy, my Love, my Heart: such a joy as none can move, such a love as none can part, such a heart as joys in love. *OFFERTORY RESPONSE # 609 Praise God, from Whom All Blessings Flow LASST UNS ERFREUEN *PRAYER OF THANKS Cindy Edwards WE GO FORTH IN GOD S NAME *HYMN # 308 O God in Whom All Life Begins NOEL *CHARGE AND BLESSING CHORAL AMEN POSTLUDE Fugue in C Major (Jig) Dietrich Buxtehude (The postlude is offered as an instrumental prayer, not a performance. Thank you for gathering with us for worship this morning. Following worship, please join us for fellowship. 4

5 About the Music: Compositions by the English composer Ralph Vaughan Williams ( ) remain a permanent part of our church music repertoire, as he was responsible for several hymn tunes we sing regularly (one of which is the beloved tune SINE NOMINE set to For All the Saints). He wrote few pieces of organ music, of which today s prelude is the most often played. The Call is one of his Five Mystical Songs written for baritone and orchestra, the text is by George Herbert ( ). A Called Meeting of the Congregation will be held on Sunday, November 5, 2017, in the Sanctuary immediately following the 11:00 a.m. worship service to elect at large members to serve on the Nominating Committee for Sanctuary flowers are given to welcome the Lange family.
