1 SIXTH SUNDAY AFTER PENTECOST July 16, 2017 What once was called the Sabbath is now a long weekend. What once was called a holy day is thought of as a holiday. Strange, isn t it, how we alter things, forgetting ---or ignoring--- the reason for their being? O Lord, You said, The Sabbath was made for people, And so it is; But now I work so hard at play, I tire myself for labor days. Remind me, Lord. Tell me again. That even You required a time to rest and be renewed. Now when I hurry through the Sabbath Day, Stop me! Stop me and let me know, That You, the mighty God, expect a great deal more from me than just a fleeting nod. Remember the Sabbath Day, to Keep it Holy. 2 SERVICE FOR THE LORD S DAY Fifteenth Sunday in Ordinary Time July 16, 2017 WE ASSEMBLE IN GOD S NAME PRELUDE Meditation from Thais Jules Massenet WELCOME AND ANNOUNCEMENTS CALL TO WORSHIP Leader: Cry out with joy to the Lord, all the earth. Worship the Lord with gladness. Come into God s presence with singing! All: For the Lord is a gracious God, whose mercy is everlasting; and whose faithfulness endures to all generations. *HYMN # 620 Praise, My Soul, the King of Heaven LAUDA ANIMA *PRAYER OF CONFESSION Pastor Jim Russell Leader: The proof of God s amazing love is this: while we were sinners Christ died for us. Because we have faith in him, we dare with confidence to approach God. Let us ask God to forgive us: All: Almighty God: you love us, but we have not loved you; you call, but we have not listened. We walk away from neighbors in need, wrapped up in our own concerns. We have gone along with evil, with prejudice, warfare and greed. God our Father, help us to face up to ourselves, so that, as you move toward us in mercy, we may repent, turn to you, and receive forgiveness; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen *SILENT CONFESSION *ASSURANCE OF PARDON Pastor Jim Russell *CONGREGATIONAL RESPONSE # 649 Amazing Grace, How Sweet the Sound AMAZING GRACE Amazing grace how sweet the sound, that saved a wretch like me! I once was lost, but now am found, was blind, but now I see. *SHARING OF CHRIST S PEACE Since God has forgiven us in Christ, we too should forgive one another. The Peace of the Lord Jesus Christ be with you all. And also with you. (Exchange signs of Christ s peace with those worshipping with you.) 2

3 WE LISTEN FOR GOD S WORD CHILDREN S MESSAGE Pastor Jim Russell PRAYER FOR ILLUMINATION Let us pray. Lord, open our hearts and minds by the power of your Holy Spirit, that as the scriptures are read and your Word is proclaimed, we may hear with joy what you say to us today. Amen. SCRIPTURE LESSON Psalm 65 (p.499 in pew Bibles) The Word of the Lord. Thanks be to God. SOLO My God is So High Spiritual, arr Hall Johnson NEW TESTAMENT LESSON 2 Timothy 4:6-22 (p.201 in pew Bibles) The Word of the Lord. Thanks be to God. SERMON What Are You Waiting For? Pastor. Jim Russell *HYMN # 846 Fight the Good Fight DUKE STREET AFFIRMATION OF FAITH Let the same mind be in you that was in Christ Jesus, who, though he was in the form of God, did not regard equality with God as something to be exploited, but emptied himself, taking the form of a slave, being born in human likeness. And being found in human form, he humbled himself and became obedient to the point of death even death on a cross. Therefore God also highly exalted him and gave him the name that is above every name, so that at the name of Jesus every knee should bend, in heaven and on earth and under the earth, and every tongue should confess that Jesus Christ is Lord, to the glory of God the Father WE GIVE THANKS TO GOD CELEBRATIONS AND CONCERNS PRAYERS OF THE PEOPLE THE LORD S PRAYER Our Father who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name. Thy kingdom come, thy will be done, on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread; and forgive us our debts, as we forgive our debtors; and lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For thine is the kingdom and the power and the glory, forever. Amen. 3
