PARISH NEWSLETTER St Teresa s Catholic Church The Presbytery, Brook Rd, IG2 7JA Tel Mobile Reg Charity stteresas.np@gmail.com Website: stteresasnewbpark.com Parish Priest: Rev Fr Matthew Bemand-Qureshi 32nd Sunday in Ordinary Time (Year B) - 11 November 2018 REMEMBRANCE SUNDAY This Sunday is both Remembrance Sunday and the centenary of the Armistice, when the First World War came to an end after four years of bloody conflict. These annual commemorations occur, providentially, in the month of the Holy Souls, the month which the church dedicates to prayer and remembrance of all who have died. Remembrance plays a significant part in our faith, which the Abbot of Mount Saint Bernard Abbey, Dom Erik Varden, explores in an excellent book that has recently been published. The book is titled The Shattering of Loneliness, with a subtitle On Christian Remembrance. He explores different biblical injunctions to remember. It is by bringing the events of our salvation into our present as we do at every Mass that we establish the bonds of communion between each other and with God that help overcome the isolation of loneliness. In a particular way, remembering and praying for those who have died in battle reminds us of our common humanity. We pay tribute today to the sacrifice they made in the cause of freedom, and we do so in the context of our remembering and re-presenting the perfect sacrifice made by the Son of God to set the whole human race free from the bonds of sin and death. The first injunction to remember which Dom Erik considers is remember you are dust words we hear on Ash Wednesday, which are also timely in this month of the Holy Souls. As we pray for our dead, we are reminded of our own mortality. We do so in the context of the hope we have in Christ, that we who are dust are also destined for glory. It is not at all morbid, and in fact an expression of our faith, that we should be prepared for that death which will come to us all one day, at a time we cannot know in advance. There are several aspects to this. It is a good idea and helpful to our loved ones to make known our wishes with regard to our funeral. This
2 can include details of scripture readings and music, but at the very least let it be known that you want a proper Catholic funeral Mass. Secondly, part of our stewardship of the material goods that come into our temporary possession is to make a will, ensuring that our family is provided for and making other gifts as an act of charity. Finally and most importantly we should pay attention to the state of our soul, deepening our friendship with Christ in prayer, striving to imitate him in the way we live, praying for the grace to persevere in our faith, and making regular use of the sacrament of confession. God Bless Fr Matthew ACT OF REMEMBRANCE The am Mass this weekend will be a Requiem Mass for those who have died in war. The readings will be as for the 32 nd Sunday but the Collect and other prayers will be for the dead. There will be an Act of Remembrance as close as possible to am, as we join the whole nation in silent prayer. Eternal rest grant unto them O Lord, and let perpetual light shine upon them. Also, on sale, will be the ever-popular miniature Christmas Stockings & Novelties. NOVEMBER ENVELOPES: It is customary to place the names of our departed loved ones on the altar during the month of the Holy Souls and to pray for them often at Mass. Please take one of the November envelopes and put the names of your loved ones in it. There is no need to include any money in the envelope - if you wish you can place an offering in the Holy Souls box by the Repository, which will be used for Masses for the Holy Souls either here or in a parish where there is need. You may of course request Masses for departed loved ones in the usual way but please bear in mind the current waiting period. CHRISTMAS FAYRE: Just two weeks to go now to our annual Christmas Fayre. This year various kinds of food will be available for lunch as well as Christmas produce, new gift items, and activities for children including craft, face painting and Santa s grotto. The Donations Bin is now in its usual position in the Porch so please be generous as you can in the remaining couple of weeks and fill it with any Christmassy produce that would be suitable for either the Tombola Stall or can be sold separately or be raffled. This includes, for example, bottles (spirits & wine, alcoholic & non-alcoholic), soft drink bottles & cans, canned food tins, cakes of any description, Christmas puddings, biscuits, chutneys (sweet or savoury), toiletries etc. Importantly though, please DO NOT place in the box any Bric-a-brac or jumble. Also, if you are able to help out in any way, either before the event or, on the day itself, please contact Jane on ADVENT CAROLS & NATIVITY: We will have our Advent Carol Service on Sunday, 09 December at 3 pm, followed by mince pies and mulled wine and more singing in the Hall. This year we are hoping to include a
4 children s nativity play in the service. Please put the date in your diary and bring along family and friends. PARISH DINNER & DANCE: A reminder that the annual Parish Dinner & Dance will take place this year on Friday, 14 December at Luigi s Restaurant, Gant s Hill. The event will be limited to a maximum of 70 people and tickets, which will once again be priced at 35 each, will be allocated on a first come first served basis. Early reservations with Jane on are therefore highly recommended for this popular parish event. Cheques should be made payable to St Teresa s Catholic Church. CONFIRMATION 2019: If you are in year 10 or above and haven t been confirmed, now is the moment to think about whether you would like to be prepared for this sacrament, to be celebrated next Pentecost. The confirmation course will begin after Christmas. If you would like to be confirmed, please write a short letter to Fr Matthew including your name and address and a short paragraph about why you would like to be confirmed. These letters should be given to Fr Matthew (in person or through the Presbytery door) before Christmas. There will be an information evening within the next few weeks. Watch this space. GRAVE LIGHTS: Grave lights are still available from the Repository for BECOMING A CATHOLIC: If you are feeling drawn to the Catholic faith and would like to begin exploring the possibility of baptism or being received into the full communion of the church if you were baptised in another Christian community or completing the journey of initiation if you have not yet been confirmed, please speak to Fr Matthew as soon as possible. There will be a course of preparation leading up to the celebration of these sacraments at Easter, so it is important to have this conversation sooner rather than later. You will not be committed to anything at this stage, only encouraged to seek the gift of faith with an open heart. VISITORS: If you are a visitor to St Teresa s then you are most welcome, and we very much hope you enjoy the service you are attending. If you are a tax payer and would like to Gift Aid your Offertory donation, then please use one of the special Gift Aid envelopes which you will find at the back of the Church. VINCENTIAN VOLUNTEERS: Are you aged between 18-35? Have you ever wanted to spend a year making a real difference in the community?
