2 THIRTIETH SUNDAY: The Prophet Jeremiah is a byword for doom and gloom giving us the descriptive word Jeremiad but today his message is one of hope and joy. God s ultimate purpose is the in-gathering of his people. Those who went into exile in tears will return in joy. No doubt Jeremiah s attention was focussed on the short term at a time when the Babylonians had captured Jerusalem, but as God s voice he also points to a purpose that will be completed only at the end of time and in a heavenly rather than earthly Jerusalem. Among those he lists are the blind and the lame. The healing miracles, such as Bartimaeus in today s Gospel, are not simply personal favours but intended as signs that with the coming of Christ God s Kingdom has already begun. It will not be established fully until the end of time but the grace of God is already at work all around us. Like Bartimaeus we need to make our needs known to Our Lord, not because he is unaware but as a sign of our faith. Christ is our Supreme High Priest offering his life for us on the Cross. The Mass is a specially privileged moment when we can make known our needs and prayers to him. We symbolically place them on the paten and in the chalice with the bread and wine we present to him for transformation in the Eucharist and these prayers are made more explicit during the Eucharistic Prayer when mention is made both of the living and the dead. This also explains the custom of asking the priest to celebrate Mass for a particular intention. It is not that the person making the request is staking an exclusive claim to the Mass but rather that the priest s personal intention is focussed especially on this request alongside the general intentions and prayers of the Church as a whole. ALL SAINTS: Thursday is the Feast of All Saints and a Holy Day of Obligation. Remembering saints and martyrs and dedicating a specific day to the each year has been a Christian tradition since the Fourth century, but it was only in 609 A.D. that Pope Boniface IV decided to remember all martyrs. Originally 13 th May was the date chosen but in 837 A.D. Pope Gregory IV extended the festival to remember All Saints and changed the date to 1st November. 3 ALL SOULS: From the earliest times Christians have prayed for those who have died. When St Monica was dying she told St Augustine not to worry about where she was buried but to remember her at the altar of God. Although our ultimate destiny is decided at the moment of death, the prayers of others can help the process whereby the fire of God s love purifies us and makes us ready to enter his presence. Friday s Commemoration of all the Faithful Departed was established by Odilo, the Abbot of Cluny, in 998 A.D. and rapidly spread throughout the Church. It is customary for priests to celebrate three Masses on this day. You can also gain plenary indulgences for the Holy Souls by various exercises of devotion such as visiting a church or cemetery and praying the Our Father and Creed for the intentions of the Holy Father, or reciting Psalm 129 ( Out of the depths ), or some other part of the Office for the Dead. As usual you are invited to leave the names of those whom you would like to be prayed for during the month of the Holy Souls in the basket near the altar. If you wish for an individual Mass to be said please use the brown envelopes at the back of the Church for the details and hand them in rather than place them in the basket MASS VARIATIONS: Monday afternoon 3.00 p.m. at St Mary s Tollesbury is the Requiem Mass for Mike Gibson. On Thursday and Friday Mass will be a.m., 6.00 p.m. and. Due to a Diocesan meeting in Brentwood Mass on Saturday will be at and there will ne no Confessions or Exposition. AN EVENING WITH MALCOLM This event takes place at URC on Saturday 3rd November to raise funds for the Bible Society. It will be an evening of musical entertainment from the leader of the Choral Society. Tickets cost 10 and can be obtained from Celia Butt after Mass at. SAVE THE DATE! VOLUNTEERS NEEDED: To help clean the church on Tuesday 6th November a.m. and to setup on Thursday 8th November after the Prayer Group (approx. 10:50 a.m.). COME-AND-SING MESSIAH: The chance to sing Handel s Messiah with professional soloists and orchestra in a Cathedral is one that many amateur singers covet. On 15th December at Brentwood Cathedral they have an opportunity to realise that dream. A specially formed choir will rehearse in the afternoon and perform the complete Messiah to an audience in the evening, accompanied by a first-class orchestra and a high quality line-up of soloists. It will be no ordinary performance as it will be conducted by Andrew Wright, the Cathedral s Director of Music, to celebrate serving 40 years as a Cathedral musician, first at Westminster and then since 1982 at Brentwood. WALSINGHAM HOUSE AT ABBOTSWICK: Service to commemorate loved ones in the month of November.
