2 Palm Sunday April 9, 2017 From the Pastor Palm Sunday of the Lord s Passion The Mystery This Sunday commemorates two distinct events in the final week of Christ s life: his entry into Jerusalem and his passion and death. We commemorate the first event at the beginning of Mass, when we bless palms and process with them, as the crowds did for Jesus. We even hear the Gospel story describing the incident. We commemorate the second event in the reading of the Passion, this year from Matthew s Gospel. We are familiar with the story. First, we hear the plot of Judas to betray Jesus, then the Last Supper, then the Agony in the Garden. After this, the arrest of Jesus, his trial, and his scourging. Then the denial of Jesus by Peter, as foretold by Jesus. Then the false choice between Jesus and Barabbas, followed by the way of the cross and the crucifixion. Finally the burial of Jesus. Two symbols deserve specific comment. First, the rabble at one point says, His blood be upon us and upon our children. For centuries this Gospel verse was misinterpreted to justify hatred and violence against the Jewish people, a tragic and avoidable crime. In reality, the rabble speaks for all of us, not only in expressing our guilt, but above all in invoking our hope. Just as Moses sprinkled blood on the people at the foot of Mt. Sinai, thus inaugurating the first covenant, so now the sprinkled blood of Jesus inaugurates the New Covenant that forgives sin and lasts forever. The second symbol is the tearing of the Temple veil at the moment when Jesus dies. Again, this incident has been misinterpreted for centuries as a symbol of God s presence leaving the Temple, but it is no such thing. It is a symbol of a new closeness between God and us. In the New Covenant, nothing stands between us, not even the veil of the Temple. Schedule of the Liturgies The liturgical schedule for Holy Week, as you know, is unique. First of all, there will be a Parish Mission on Tuesday night: the Church s Evening Prayer, accompanied by my 20 minute conference on the seven last words of Christ. After this service, I will make myself available for confessions. On Holy Thursday the Evening Mass of the Lord s Supper will take place at 7:00 PM, concluding with a Eucharistic procession; the church will remain open for adoration until 10:00 PM. On Good Friday we will celebrate Readings and Morning Prayer at 8:00 AM, the Stations of the Cross at 3:00 PM, and the Liturgy of the Lord s Passion at 7:00 PM. On Holy Saturday we will celebrate Readings and Morning Prayer at 8:00 AM. I will make myself available for confessions from 10:00 AM to 12:00 Noon. The Easter Vigil will take place at 8:00 PM. THERE ARE NO 3:30 CONFES- SIONS NOR A 4:30 MASS ON HOLY SATURDAY. The Thursday and Friday evening services will probably last for an hour and a half; the Saturday night service, probably two hours.
