2 7th Sunday Of Easter May 28, 2017 From the Pastor The Solemnity of the Ascension of the Lord The Solemnity of the Ascension of the Lord is an occasion of state. It represents the formal glorification of the Risen Christ as if it were his enthronement. As Jesus is lifted up before the Apostles and passes beyond their sight, the Church chants one of the psalms of divine kingship, Psalm 47: God mounts his throne amid shouts of joy; a blast of trumpets for the Lord! It is an occasion for joy. We see this in other settings. When the Pope appears in public, there is always applause and cheering. The same for a monarch or president. When a new bishop is ordained or installed in a diocese, again there is rejoicing and applause. But this is Christ. The rejoicing is deeper and more sustained. This is the King of Kings. This is a King who lives forever. This is a King who achieved his kingship through humility and suffering to our initial misunderstanding and distress. A King who has definitively conquered sin, evil, suffering, and death, and who shares that victory with us. Why shouldn t we rejoice? There is something special about this enthronement. In my student days in Rome, I had the privilege of attending the inaugurations of both Pope John Paul I and Pope John Paul II. There were probably about 100,000 people in St. Peter s Square on each of those days. All of them were jubilant. There were millions of people watching those ceremonies on television. But this is my point: the popes did not know that I was there. The popes knew many of the people there, but not everyone. What is special about the enthronement of Christ is that he knows each of us. More importantly, he loves each of us. Coronations or inaugurations are massive and dignified events, but the enthronement of Christ is also an intimate event. In the midst of the celebration, he is accepting the honor that is due him, but he is also speaking in our hearts. He is saying things like, I do not leave you orphans, I am with you always, I call you my friends, I want you to be with me where I am. And we are moved by his gift. When Jesus rose from the dead, he was not simply resuscitated. He did not simply return to the life he had known before his death. When he rose, he rose to a whole new plane of existence. When he ascended into heaven, he transcended the limits of time and space. Just as he once appeared in the Upper Room despite the closed door, so now he continues to appear in every celebration of the sacraments, in every place and time. And in every appearance, he is offering us salvation. When Jesus was lifted up from his Apostles, a cloud took him from their sight. This was not a meteorological cloud. This cloud would not have appeared on satellite maps, if such things had existed then. It was a symbol. Our eyes cannot behold the glory of God. We see the same symbol in the dedication of Solomon s Temple, when a cloud filled the sanctuary. It was the glory of God s presence filling the holy place. It overwhelms our senses. Our experience of God in the present may be obscure, but it is real. He makes himself known to us little by little, and we respond in the same way. Someday we will see him face to face and that will be our entire happiness.
