2 The Most Holy Trinity June 11, 2017 From the Pastor The Solemnity of the Most Holy Trinity For many Catholics, the mystery that we celebrate today, the Most Holy Trinity, is not a vital part of the life of faith. If they think of it at all, they may think of it as an unsolvable paradox, as the supreme riddle of our faith, or as the test of all tests. If we do not understand, this is because faith transcends our understanding and we must simply accept that fact. But the Catechism of the Catholic Church states that the Mystery of the Trinity is the central mystery of the faith. It is not the supreme test; it is the reality that holds all else in unity. How should we understand this? The Triune God is the source and destiny of all else that is. Everything has its existence as a gift from the Creator God. And existence does not simply unfold randomly; it moves inexorably to a fateful encounter with God at the end of time. If God has created us, he continues to hold us in existence at every moment of our lives. And if an encounter with him is the final experience of our lives, then that encounter is the purpose of all the dynamisms and changes of our lives. Neither of these realities can be escaped. We are familiar with the traditional formulation of the doctrine of the Trinity: there is one God in three divine persons. The persons do not share or divide the divine nature among them. Each person possesses the divine nature completely. Each is completely God. Thus, even though they are radically distinct from one another, they possess only one divine mind, one divine love. It is a mystery of unimaginable intimacy. And frankly, this is an intimacy that we humans crave. The Father loves the Son and has given him everything. The Son loves the Father and gives him everything in return. This is what we see when we ponder the cross. Jesus gave his life in an act of perfect obedience to the Father and perfect love for us, the sinners he came to save. The mutual love between the Father and the Son is yet-another divine person, the Holy Spirit. Our readings today give us a way to ponder the mystery. In the first reading, from Exodus, God gives us his name: The Lord, a merciful and gracious God, slow to anger and rich in kindness and fidelity. In our second reading, Paul gives us the characteristics that are particular to each of the persons: grace, love, and fellowship. Finally, our Gospel gives us what many people consider the heart of the New Testament: God loves the world so much that he gave his Son not to condemn but to save us. These are all things that we can understand. This is the way God has chosen to make himself known to us. The Trinity is a mystery of love. By the grace of Christ, we share in that mystery. We become a part of the eternal exchange of love that constitutes the inner life of the triune God. Most importantly, we embody that exchange, we show it forth by the way we share our love with others.
