2 3rd Sunday of Lent March 19, 2017 From the Pastor The Third Sunday of Lent The readings for the Third Sunday of Lent prepare us to celebrate Baptism at the Easter Vigil by presenting us with the theme of water. In the first reading, from Exodus, the people complain of their thirst in the wilderness, and the Lord satisfies their thirst with water from the rock. In the second reading, from the letter to the Romans, the love of God is symbolized with water, as Paul tells us that God has flooded our hearts with his love. Finally the Gospel presents us with John s story of the woman at the well, to whom Jesus promises living water, a gift that satisfies thirst forever. There are some details in the Gospel that are worth exploring. Who was the woman at the well? The Gospel identifies her as a woman of Samaria, a region that practiced what the Jews considered to be a debased form of Israelite religion. This was why she was surprised that Jesus spoke to her at all. But there are other questions as well. Why was she at the well at noon? Why was she alone? Usually the women of a town would come for water in the morning, when the day was cooler, and as a group, so they would be safer. Her departure from this practice suggests that she was up to no good. The fact that she has had five husbands reinforces that impression. She was approaching Jesus for reasons that were not religious. Jesus dealt with her directly and constructively. To her question about the legitimacy of Samaritan worship, Jesus foretold the coming of a worship in Spirit and truth, a worship that transcends the limitations of place. When she spoke of the coming Messiah, he identified himself as such. In her amazement, she then went to gather the townspeople to meet him and many became believers, both on the word of her testimony and on the basis of their own experience of him. Of course, the same Gospel passage invites us to place our belief and trust in him. The earlier exchange about living water is also worth our exploring. What is living water? In the ordinary usage of the time, living water was flowing water, not the still water of a well or a cistern. We know today that such water is likely to be more oxygenated than still water, therefore cleaner and fresher tasting. A goatherd would seek this kind of water for his flock. Here we see yet another symbol of Jesus care for his people. But the living water of which Jesus speaks is a spiritual reality, the gift of the Holy Spirit. This gift is an everlasting gift, a gift that never runs out, a gift that satisfies all human longing. It is the whole point of these readings. The thirst of the people in the wilderness, the thirst of the Samaritan woman, the thirst of us today is a symbol of something deeper. We are creatures of desire. And in the end, the only thing that can satisfy us is God. As St. Augustine wrote: You have created us for yourself, O Lord, and our hearts are restless until they rest in you. Fr. Brennan
