Mass Schedule: Daily: Monday-Friday at 7:00am & 7:00pm; Saturday: 9:00am Weekend Mass: Saturday Vigil: 4:00pm Sunday: 7:30am, 9:00am, 10:30am, and 12 Noon Confession: Saturday: 9:30am - 10:00am & 3:00pm - 3:45pm Baptism: First Sunday of the month at the Noon Mass, as well as the second, third and fourth Sunday at 1:30pm. Instruction for new parents takes place on the second Saturday of the month at 10am. Arrangements are made with the rectory, Marriages: The common policy of marriage requires that arrangements be made at least One Year before the date of marriage and before any social plans are made. Bride or Groom must be a parishioner. Please do not make any arrangements until you have met with the pastor, Msgr. Corona, and the wedding date has been approved. Ministry to the Sick: Parishioners who are homebound are visited on the first Friday of each month by our Deacons & Religious. If you know of a parishioner that is seriously ill or hospitalized, please call the parish office. Lazarus Ministry: Lazarus Ministry contacts and helps families of deceased parishioners. Providing greeters at funeral liturgies, preparing meals and house sitting are several ways parishioners assist families. Also, a Mass of Remembrance is held every November for those deceased that year. Sponsors & Godparents: Must be 18 years old, registered as an adult and be confirmed in the Catholic Church. If you are married, your marriage must be recognized by the church. This is especially important if you wish to be a sponsor for Confirmation or a Godparent for Baptism. It takes 6 months of attending Mass to be eligible for both of these privileges. Parish Religious Education Program (PREP): Grades 1-8 Monday 6:15pm to 7:30pm Grades 1-7 Thursday 6:15pm to 7:30pm Special Needs PREP - Grades 1-8 Tuesday, 6pm-7pm For more information and Registration packet, please call Sr. Phyllis in the Parish Office at Parish Registration: Any new family who has moved into the parish, or adult children 18 and over, are invited to register at our parish after any Sunday Mass or visit the rectory 8 am to 4 pm Monday through Friday. 4 Dear Sisters and Brothers, Every Saturday afternoon, back in the 1950s, the Raritan Playhouse used to have a children s matinee. Two films would be shown, usually Westerns, and the children of our little town at the time I was growing up, would line up along the sidewalk on Anderson Street to be let in. By the way, with a quarter you could see the movie, buy a drink and have some popcorn. On this particular Saturday afternoon, my brother and I, persuaded our mom to let us go to the matinee. With fifty cents in hand, my brother led the way and soon we were standing with the rest of the kids, all excited at the prospect of the show. In that crowd, my brother met up with a school pal, a boy who was a bit more rough and ready. Give me your money and follow me, the boy said, and without thinking he handed over the money. The boy barged through the waiting children and made his way to the front of the line. My brother refused to follow, and without money, we turned for home, where I reported the drama. My brother never forgot that day. We are famous for forming lines, but my brother who lost our money remembers the incident for a more important reason. We are part and parcel of one another in this world, in solidarity with each other. It is not right to barge through where other people stand and wait. It s better to be among the people, one with them, than to push yourself forward at others expense. Today in our Gospel Lesson, we come upon another face in the crowd near the Jordan River. Jesus comes from Galilee, and joins all the other people---and there were a lot of people who have come out into the wilderness to listen to the prophet and to be baptized by him. John the Baptist has called people to renounce their sinful ways and to prepare themselves for one who is to come. By going down into the water, they renounce their sinful way of life. As they emerge from the river, they are renewed for holiness and ready for the coming of the Messiah. Jesus joins this crowd of sinners, walks in step with them and, when his turn comes, goes down into the waters. John recognizes Jesus as the Holy One, and is initially reluctant to baptize him. But Jesus insists. He is taking on the sins of everyone, of the whole world, and with those sins upon him he goes down into the water. Jesus is one of us, and it is because he is not a sinner that he can share our sins. Sin makes us all strangers to one another, keeping us apart from one another. But the sinless person is the one who is closest of all to us. With this public act, in his thirtieth year, Jesus sets out on the road of our redemption. We will be saved through him. He will carry our sins for us. There will come a time when Jesus will say, with urgency: There is a baptism I must still receive, and how great is my distress till it is over. The baptism that began in the River Jordan will come to its fruition on the cross and in the resurrection from the dead. At the Jordan, Jesus hears the words of his Father affirming and confirming him in his true identity as beloved Son of God. This powerful affirmation brings to Jesus all the calm confidence of a person who knows who he is. God s Spirit is poured into him. Jesus is able to go out and begin his public life and work. He is fitted for that task by the voice of his Father and the gift of the Spirit. That same voice and that same Spirit are given to all who follow Christ and are baptized. We God s people, and gifts have been given to us. As Isaiah says in our Old Testament Lesson: I have made of you a witness to the peoples, a leader and a master of the nations. Such is our vocation. We may not remember the day of our baptism, especially if we were babies in the arms of our parents, but that does not matter. We are baptised and confirmed people, and God has bestowed favors upon us. Today is the day to respond to the favor we have received, God s Holy Spirit dwelling in us. We are not just a face in the crowd. We are children of the living God and God s favor rests on us. May God always be pleased with us! Monsignor Michael Our Scripture Lessons remind us: that Jesus stands amid the crowds at the Jordan the sinless one who carries the sins of the world; Jesus is affirmed by the Father; and that all of us who are baptized are affirmed for a life of holiness by the grace of the Holy Spirit. 6 Dear Friends of St. Ann School, We are in celebration mode! One hundred percent of our 8 th grade students have been accepted to the high school of their choice. Students accepted at more than one high school are in the process of discerning which will best serve their educational needs. I am proud to announce that our students have been accepted at Mount St. Mary s, St. Joseph s Prep, Bishop George Ahr, and Immaculata. Scholarships are in process and being tabulated. Eight years ago these young people were happy, anxious kindergartners full of fun and excitement. They learned numbers, the alphabet, and how to be a good friend to Jesus and their classmates. Six years ago they made their First Confession and First Communion. These important sacraments marked them on a journey of faith. They learned about right and wrong and how to love. They became proficient at reading, addition, subtraction, and even critical thinking. Four years ago, they moved upstairs and learned time management skills and became proficient in setting and achieving worthwhile goals. They mastered multiplication and division and became independent readers and thinkers. Two years ago they began their Junior High years in preparation for the next educational step which will see them leave our hallowed halls. They prepared to become adult members of our faith community in Confirmation. They have a little over five months left with us. They have made their mark in our school as leaders, servants, seekers of wisdom, and agents of change. They are compassionate individuals who relish justice and truth. The world will be a better place because of them. They are better people because of St. Ann School. For your contribution to their success, we say thank you.
