Anointing of the Sick: Please call the rectory to arrange a home visit. Ministry to the Sick: Parishioners who are homebound are visited on the first Friday of each month by our Deacons & Religious. If you know of a parishioner that is seriously ill or hospitalized, please call the parish office. Lazarus Ministry: Lazarus Ministry contacts and helps families of deceased parishioners. Providing greeters at funeral liturgies, preparing meals and house sitting are several ways parishioners assist families. Also, a Mass of Remembrance is held every November for those Inspired by the Holy Spirit, we the Catholic Parish of St. Ann embrace all as family and continue Christ's mission by exemplifying the love of God and neighbor as stewards of God's gifts to us. Sponsors & Godparents: Must be 18 years old, registered as an adult and be confirmed in the Catholic Church. If you are married, your marriage must be recognized by the church. This is especially important if you wish to be a sponsor for Confirmation or a Godparent for Baptism. It takes 6 months of attending Mass to be eligible for both of these privileges. 4 Dear Sisters and Brothers, RESPECT LIFE SUNDAY In many walks of life we are told, If you don t use it, you lose it. This can range from our language skills, our muscle tone, to musical skills and sports skills. The concept of brain training has become popular, to help us stave off dementia or other ailments. There is, of course, some truth in this saying. In order to develop our bodies and minds we know we need to use them. In order to learn a skill we know we need to practise it repeatedly, to really integrate the skill into our life. In the ancient world the Greeks thought this applied to moral virtues as well. For them, people could be taught to be virtuous. By exercising the virtues they became a part of the person. They developed the theory of the cardinal virtues: prudence, temperateness, fortitude and justice. Training in the virtues was arduous, and if you didn t use them, you lost them. They could not be turned off and on like a tap; they had to become a part of your character. The same could be said of all our talents and skills. If we do not nurture them, then they can wither and die. We may even lose the idea that the virtues, or our own talents, are important at all. On a supernatural level, too, if we don t use the virtues of faith, hope and charity, we can lose them. In today s Gospel Lesson of the parable of the tenants in the vineyard---while they have not lost the ability to recognise the heir, have lost any interest in the importance of that fact. They have cease to care about the consequences of their actions. They have became so brutalised that they do not realise that their own future well-being is tied up with cooperating with, and respecting, the heir. As the first letter of John says, the sensual body, the lustful eye, pride in possessions, have done their work on the tenants, and they have lost whatever virtue they originally might have had. To put it another way, they have a dead faith, they ve given up on hope, and they have absolutely zero charity. Jesus uses this parable to warn how the savior--- the heir ---will be rejected by the very people who recognize him. That people should reject the one sent to them is part of what St. Paul calls, the mystery of iniquity. Jesus also points out that many people will receive him, that they will recognise him as the cornerstone rejected by the builders, but which is now the keystone of the temple. Our Scripture Lessons remind us: 5 OCTOBER, 2014 THOUGHTS FOR THE WEEK So the Gospel Lesson combines two of the most important images for us, the people of God, vineyard and temple, and shows how Christ is the fulfilment of them both. How then do we avoid becoming like the wicked tenants of the vineyard? Surely it is by practicing the virtues, both cardinal and theological? We can only do this if we maintain a humble attitude to the Lord and pray for his help. As we practice the virtues they become a part of who we are. With regard to the virtue of faith we can say, Lord, I believe, help my unbelief. As the virtue of faith comes to the aid of our intellect, perhaps we could match it with what St. Paul says in the second reading, fill your minds with everything that is true. We could match the virtue of hope with St Paul s advice to ask God for things with prayer and thanksgiving, since prayer is the expression of memory and hope. We could match up our charity with his counsel to Keep doing all the things that you learnt from me. The virtue of charity comes to the aid of our will, so that we can will and work for that which God has prepared for us. If we use the virtues, then we won t lose the virtues. This is not always easy. Bad habits, temptations and weariness all interfere with our attempts to be faithful servants and good stewards of the gifts that God has given us. But Christ is always at hand in prayer and the sacraments to come to our help, to raise us up when we fall. Our Lady, the refuge of sinners and help of Christians, prays for us continually, so that when the heir comes, we will be ready to receive him joyfully. In your charity, pray for the sick and the lonely - visit them if you can. Please remember to pray for all who have wandered from the Faith and all who have died. Also, pray for the souls of all the faithful departed of our Parish Family. May God always be pleased with us! Monsignor Michael that a saying goes, If you don t use it, you lose it. This applies to both natural and supernatural skills; that the tenants in the vineyard have lost faith, hope and charity; and that we can integrate them by practice, through prayer and the sacraments. (To clarify, "bell choir" does not sing - we make music by ringing bells of all sizes; ability to read music preferred). Candidate campaigns were exemplary. Student speeches were well written and delivered with confidence and poise. Those voting took their responsibility to vote very seriously. They listened attentively and respectfully to campaigners. Congratulations to all of our candidates. It takes a very brave and dedicated person to run in an election. Every candidate competed with dignity and honor. To those who will accept elected positions, thank you. This honor comes with the power of leadership, but also with an obligation to serve. We will be tapping talents of those not elected to formal positions for special projects.
