MARRIAGES: The common policy of marriage requires that arrangements be made at least One Year before the date of marriage and before any social plans are made. Bride or Groom must be a parishioner. Please do not make any arrangements until you have met with the pastor, Msgr. Corona, and the wedding date has been approved. BAPTISM: First Sunday of the month at the Noon Mass, as well as the second, third and fourth Sunday at 1:30pm. Instruction for new parents takes place on the second Saturday of the month at 10am. Arrangements are made with the rectory. SPONSORS & GODPARENTS: Must be 18 years old, registered as an adult and be confirmed in the Catholic Church. If you are married, your marriage must be recognized by the church. This is especially important if you wish to be a sponsor for Confirmation or a Godparent for Baptism. It takes 6 months of attending Mass to be eligible for both of these privileges. LAZARUS MINISTRY: Lazarus Ministry contacts and helps families of deceased parishioners. Providing greeters at funeral liturgies, preparing meals and house sitting are several ways parishioners assist families. Also, a Mass of Remembrance is held every November for those deceased that year. MINISTRY TO THE SICK: Parishioners who are homebound are visited on the first Friday of each month by our Deacons & Religious. 2 Dear Sisters and Brothers, A five year old bows her head to say Grace before eating her school lunch. But she is reprimanded by the school s lunchroom moderator and told she must stop and get on with her meal. It s good to pray, the young girl says, but the moderator retorts with, It s not good. The girl s parents are outraged when they hear about it, for the daughter has been taught to say Grace before every meal, and they remove her from the school. The incident happened at a Florida school, and it mushroomed into accusations of religious discrimination. The parents felt that in offering thanks to God before meals they were showing that they did not take their food and their lives for granted. The girl was being helped to develop an understanding of herself as a human being placed in a world of gifts from God. This family felt that saying Grace at mealtimes is important because eating is among the most intimate ways we know for joining our lives with others other people, animals, plants, local habitats and ecosystem processes and with God as the source of life. Amid the whirl and speed of life, saying Grace is a patient and focused time in which we become mindful of our place in the world. Eating is not simply a physical act. The family felt that it is also a spiritual practice, whereby the deep and sacramental significance of life is learned daily. In today s Gospel Lesson, Jesus uses the staple food of bread to point his followers to something more. He suggests that the crowd is following him to get a free meal as they did last week in the story of the feeding of the five thousand but they should be looking to him for so much more. Jesus refers to himself as the bread of life. This is a phenomenal statement. First, by equating himself with bread a staple food in the Middle East Jesus is saying he is essential for life. Second, the life Jesus is referring to is not physical life, but eternal life. Ordinary bread goes stale or mouldy quickly in a hot climate. Jesus refers to himself as the bread that lasts for ever and always gives life. Jesus is trying to get his followers and us thinking not only of the physical, but of the spiritual realm as well. Jesus has provided food for our bodies, but he also feeds us spiritually with love, hope, grace and forgiveness. This is the true manna from heaven, which points beyond itself. As the source of all life, God meets us here and now as divine love made food, as life for humanity. Yes, by all means, feast on the bread, Jesus says. But don t forget to feast on me! Whether we appreciate it or not, whenever we eat we commune with God. We experience the world as a place of gift the work of God s hands. If we don t do so already, perhaps we could say Grace before our meals. When we offer a blessing upon our food, we do not merely pronounce a few pious words, but rather commit ourselves to the nurture, protection and celebration of the gifts of God s creation. We participate in the healing of the world and that gives meaning to our lives. Practically speaking, this means that as we give thanks for our food we will also make sure that the food we eat does not involve unnecessary suffering to animals and does not degrade our soil and water sources. We could support gardeners and farmers who grow food in a healthful and careful manner. We could even learn to grow some food ourselves so that we can see, smell, touch and taste at first hand the miraculous and fragile processes of birth, growth, death, decay and rebirth going on all around us. Human life is most fulfilled when we celebrate the sacrament of life, when we transform mundane eating into an act of solidarity with creation and communion with God. In terms of meals, it could mean fewer TV dinners and more enjoying the company of family and friends over a meal. Sharing a meal gives us opportunities for discipleship, for eating with others creates a profound sense of community. We could get in touch with someone from whom we are alienated, or perhaps take part in events addressing the needs of vulnerable people. Through food, we can heal rifts and celebrate life. Beginning next weekend, Deacon Roy Rabinowitz will begin serving as a deacon here at Saint Ann s Parish. Deacon Roy was ordained at the same time as Deacon Conrad, and he has served as a Permanent Deacon in a number of parishes. So he comes to us with much experience and will begin to relieve some of the pressure that Deacon John and Deacon Conrad have been under, to perform all the deaconate functions. Please welcome Deacon Roy. In your charity, pray for the sick and the lonely visit them if you can. Please remember to pray for all who have wandered from the Faith and all who have died especially Ann Lukas. Also, pray for the souls of all the faithful departed of our Parish Family. May God always be pleased with us! Monsignor Michael OUR SCRIPTURE LESSONS REMIND US: that Jesus refers to himself as the bread of life food for the whole person; that he wants us to partake of this spiritual food; and that when we eat we can commune with God and God s creation, a spiritual as well as a physical experience. 6 Dear Friends of St. Ann School, Who turned the page of the calendar to August? This simply cannot be. We just closed for the summer and now we are preparing to re open with school beginning in less than a month. I am thankful that with God and in heaven, there is no time. It is not that we waste time but more that we bind ourselves as slaves to it. Just think, time is the shackle attached to every adult wrist. Children do not care about time. It is a cultural right of passage to someone s notion of responsibility. But have no fear. Regardless of the calendar date, the school is and will be ready. The floors are like mirrored glass and everything smells good. The teachers are slowly transforming our summer ghost town into a warm and friendly, child centered environment. New books are arriving. School supply packs are prepared with new crayons and pencils, notebooks, and more. Desks and chairs have been delivered to classrooms to house our current numbers. With that in mind, do not delay. There is room for that special young someone in your life. We want to be just as prepared for your child, your neighbor, or your relative as we are for all the rest of our students. Please call for a visit or registration information as soon as possible. This is a one of a kind, God centered education that prepares children to fulfill their destiny given to them before they were even born.
