3 JANUARY 22, 2012 ~ THE THIRD SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME Thoughts For The Week Dear Sisters and Brothers, A number of years ago, when my former parish was preparing for a mission, the Parish Pastoral Council Retreat Committee entrusted with getting the show on the road, decided to look for innovative ways to advertise the event. A large banner that could be strung across the front of the church was planned, knowing that it would attract the attention of the people who passed each day on their way to and from town. The message was simple but challenging: You cannot recycle time, but you can use it well. But it wasn t that simple: the message was cleverly disguised in a series of icons, which had to be translated. The first phrase began with a ewe a female sheep and was followed by a tin can, a knot in a rope, and the green recycling logo, before ending with a large clock to signify time. I had a great time listening to the committee and other member of the Pastoral Council trying to unravel the message. Some of those whose first language wasn t English made great strides in solving the riddle, but couldn t understand why a sheep should have such trouble with recycling! We live in a busy world and many of us complain that we haven t got time even for the things we consider of real importance. Yet deep down most of us are honest enough to recognize that we don t manage our time very well and that we often waste time or procrastinate, looking for distractions. If there is one thing that defines St. Mark s Gospel it is that right from the beginning there is a sense of urgency. St. Mark is keen to let us know that now is the time for action. He is forever telling us there is no time for delay. Jesus begins his public ministry with the words This is the time of fulfilment ; and the first apostles are called and follow him. This message is reinforced for us in today s New Testament Lesson by St. Paul s insistence with the Corinthians that they should not waste time on things that are no longer of importance. As you read the Lesson, you might think that he overdoes things, suggesting that those with wives should live as though they had not, and so on. However, it is worth reminding ourselves that St. Paul really did think that Jesus was due to return any day and that everyday life would soon be over and done with. In his later letters, he tempers his approach and offers a longer-term perspective on things. All this is in stark contrast to the story of Jonah in our Old Testament Lesson. We hear about his arrival in Nineveh and his call to the people to repent; but remember that Jonah, like so many of his counterparts, was a reluctant prophet. He was trying to escape his commission from God when the ship he was fleeing on was caught in a mighty storm, whereupon he confessed and was thrown overboard. Only when he had been spat out on the shore by the sea creature did he dry himself off and accept his mission. I believe there is a touch of the Jonah in most of us-- there are tasks that we know await our attention, yet we find all kinds of excuses to avoid them, either because we can t be bothered, or because we fear the consequences, or because we fear failure. The parish mission that inspired the banner about not being able to recycle time invited the parishioners to think about our Lord s statement: This is the time of fulfillment. To begin with, they pondered that powerful passage in the Old Testament Book of Ecclesiastes, which tells us that there is a time for every season under heaven; and then each evening they focused on a different aspect of the gift of time- -a time for stillness, a time for healing, a time for searching, a time for growth, a time for others and a time for rejoicing. Jesus provides us with the perfect model when it comes to the use of time. For all the urgency in St. Mark s Gospel, Jesus finds time to be still and to pray, he always has time for others and he is not afraid to rejoice at the appropriate time. When it comes to searching, isn t it interesting that while we think it is up to us to spend our lives searching for meaning, searching for purpose, searching for God, the Gospel reminds us that actually it is the other way round? We have a God who is searching for us. Jesus says to us, as he said to his first disciples: Follow me. In your charity, pray for the sick and the lonely visit them if you can. Also, please remember to pray for all who have wandered from the faith, and all who have died, especially Monsignor Cafone s mother, Cordelia. May God always be pleased with us! 4 JANUARY 22, 2012 We are a Stewardship Parish Offertory Collection for Jan. 15, 2012<.<<<<.$9, Poor Box for Jan. 15, 2012<<<<<<<<<<<$80.85 Thank you and God bless always Baptisms Baptisms are celebrated each month on the First Sunday at the Noon Mass as well as the second, third, and fourth Sundays at 1:30pm. There are no baptisms during Lent. Arrangements must be made in advance and new parents are required to take a Baptism Preparation class held on the second Saturday of each month at 10:00am with Deacon Conrad in the Church Meeting Room. Sponsors & Godparents If you are 18 years or older, you must register as an adult and be Confirmed in the Catholic Church. If you are married, your marriage must be recognized by the Church. This is especially important if you wish to be a Sponsor for Confirmation or Godparent. It takes 6 months of attending Mass to be eligible for both of these privileges. Marriages The common policy of marriage requires that arrangements be made at least One Year before the date of marriage and before any social plans are made. Either the bride or groom must be a registered parishioner. Weddings may be scheduled for Friday afternoon, Saturday morning or afternoon, or Sunday afternoon ceremony only. Wedding Masses are not celebrated on Sunday s. On Sunday, January 29th St. Ann School will begin celebrating Catholic Schools Week. Please join our Home School Association for Mass at 9am or 10:30am followed by a Pancake Breakfast in the school cafeteria. The cost is $5 per adult and $3 per child. Children under 2 are free. Although not necessary, please call the school at or parish office with your RSVP by Wed., the 25th so we can plan ahead. Foundation for Catholic Education Special Collection The second collection next weekend is for the Foundation for Catholic Education, a Diocesan endowment fund which provides tuition assistance grants for students in financial need in the Catholic elementary and high schools of the Diocese of Metuchen. Without financial assistance, these students might not receive the gift of a Catholic education. Please be as generous as your means allow. Mark your calendar for Tuesday, May 1st for the 2012 Students-to-Leaders Education Dinner which also benefits the Foundation for Catholic Education. Watch the parish bulle- Saint Ann School Registration for Open House - Wednesday, January 25th - 7:30 p.m. to 9:00 p.m. Come to a Presentation about our school given by the Principal, Home-School Association President and some of our teachers and students. We will meet in the school cafeteria for a brief performance by our students, an introduction to the school by the Principal, a tour of the school by our parents, and a visit with the teachers in their classrooms. Ask questions as you tour, and take home some information about our school and a registration packet. Open House - Sunday, January 29th - 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. Come to the 9 a.m. Mass, if you wish to attend the school Mass. Follow us to the Pancake Breakfast in the school cafeteria after the Mass, if you wish. Go directly into the school building after the Mass if you prefer. Pick up information in the school lobby; ask questions of the teachers and parents. Tour the school; be sure to visit the classrooms of your choice. We will be open to you from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. Open House - Wednesday, February 1st - 9 a.m. to 10:30 a.m. Come to the school between 9 a.m. and 10:30 a.m. Visit the classrooms while the teachers and students are working. School parents will guide you to the classrooms you wish to visit. At 9:45 a.m. the Principal and the Home-School President and other Officers will be in the cafeteria to tell you all about our school. Pick up information in the School Lobby. Ask questions of our present parents. Registration will begin on January 26th and will continue for as long as necessary. Mornings from 9 am to 11 am are the best hours for registration, but if you need to come at a different hour, feel free to notify us and we will give you a suitable time for registration. Bring Birth Certificates, Baptismal Certificates and Health records as well as other pertinent materials according to age level. ATLANTIC CITY St. Ann s monthly trip to Atlantic City will resume on Thursday, February 9th, Please call if you or someone you know is interested in going or would like more information.
