3 Dear Sisters and Brothers, FOURTH SUNDAY OF ADVENT Thought For The Week When the old man died, he left behind him an inheritance of 50,000. Unfortunately he had never made a will, and the money, if left unclaimed, would pass to the government. A company of probate researchers, popularly known as heir hunters, was quickly on the case, and they discovered an only son, living in Spain. This man had never really known his father, his parents having separated when he was still very young. When contacted by the heir hunters, the man at first thought it was a joke; but he packed a case and travelled to London to discover more. The visit to London opened up a whole new world to the son. The researchers had been able to piece together the life story of the old man, and the son was able to visit some of the places connected with his father s life. He came to understand that his father, a Polish man, born in France, had been a prisoner and forced labourer both of the Germans and of the Russians. He had escaped to Italy, and finally made his way to England. After the Second World War he had married a Spanish woman in England and had a son, but the union had not lasted. The woman went back to Spain with her son, and the man never saw them again. The son now returned to Spain with his financial inheritance, and with a whole lot more. He now knew where he came from. He had a greater understanding of who his father was, and how hard his life had been. He was richer in so many more ways than money. His understanding of himself and his place in the world had been enriched. Today, the Sunday before Christmas, the Church acts as heir hunter for us, to teach us who we are and where we come from. This teaching involves a lesson about Jesus himself, about who he is. St. Matthew has begun his Gospel story with a genealogy, a family tree, to show us the bloodline of Jesus. He now goes on to tell us the story of Jesus birth. This is what happened, he says. We hear the story of Mary and Joseph, and of a surprise pregnancy. St. Matthew then relates to us the explanation. This child is the fruit of the Holy Spirit. He is son of Mary, and Son of God. God is with us. With this understanding, Joseph makes a home for mother and child. Stewardship Note This message must now be passed on to the whole world. In our New Testament Lesson, St Paul, writing to the Christians in Rome, tells them that they are the inheritors of great wealth. T hey belong to Jesus Christ. They are called to be part of his family and family line. The message that they receive is spelled out very clearly. Jesus is fully a human being, born of Mary. Jesus is fully divine, being the Son of God. The great event that reveals this to us is the resurrection from the dead. Jesus in glory, in his full power, calls us to share in his grace, the grace of holiness. We are called to be saints in this world. This is our inheritance. We are rich indeed. The benefits of this faith are clear. We are given a great understanding of our place in this world, and of the meaning of life itself. We understand our life as a journey in love to God. We belong to Jesus Christ. In our warring and troubled world it can be a sad and ironic thing to see and to hear claims made by one side or another in a conflict that God is on our side, or God is with us. This partial attitude, claiming God for oneself, is foolish and frightening. St Paul makes it abundantly clear that his mission in preaching the Gospel is to announce Jesus Christ as Saviour of the whole world, to preach the obedience of faith to all nations. The Gospel is a universal message, not a partial one. God is with us all, not just with some. We have received, therefore, a profound understanding of what it means to be a human being. It is to be a child of God. As inheritors of the Gospel, we are called to live each day in the obedience of faith, and called to bring together in unity the scattered children of God. In your charity, please pray for the sick and lonely visit them if you can. Also, please remember to pray for all who have wandered from the Faith and all who have died. Pray especially for the parents of the babies who have been killed through abortion this week. May God always be pleased with us! Monsignor Michael When he discovered that Mary was with child, Joseph resolved to end their engagement with as little disgrace as possible. But obedient to the voice of God, he changed those plans and became instead the protector of the child Jesus and His mother, Mary. God grant that I may be as open to the leading of the Holy Spirit!

A Note from the Pregnancy Aid & Information Center, Inc., Raritan NJ As the Christmas season approaches all our volunteers want to say thank you to you for your continuous support of the Pregnancy Aid & Information Center. With your generous help we have been able to keep the Pro-Life mission active for over 30 years! We are able to help over 400 women a month with spirituality, emotionally, materially (layettes, baby items, pregnancy tests., tec.) and with referrals to meet more of their needs. Thank you for your kindness. We get to see the joy of our mothers and babies because of your help and want to share Christmas gratitude with you. Giving Tree Many Thanks to all who bought gifts for the needy from the Giving Tree. Your response was wonderful! A total of 375 tags were taken, benefiting 6 families from Catholic Charities, 23 youngsters from the Somerset Youth Center for Abused Children, 10 local families, and 112 pairs of gloves and socks for Somerset County DYFS. Thank you to all the elves who helped with this project. May you all have a Joyous and Blessed Christmas! Weekly Giving Program Thank you to the parish families who have shown a concern for their parish by responding to our Increased Weekly Giving Program. If you have not yet returned your response envelope, please consider doing so as soon as possible. It has been a tradition for the St. Ann School children to present a Christmas Program every year since the opening of the school in This year s program marks our 45 th Christmas program. The younger children prepared a program to present to their families and to the friends and graduates of our school on Friday morning, December 17 th. The program consisted of songs and poems by the Pre-K and the Kindergarten, a reflection on The True Meaning of Christmas narrated and set to music by the First Grade students, a playlet based on The Gift of the Magi performed by Third Graders and of course, the Story of the Nativity presented by the Second Graders. The Saint Ann School Bands rehearsed and performed some Christmas selections for everyone to enjoy. The older students 4 th through 8 th came up with a play within a play presenting a rehearsal for a Christmas Nativity program. The 7 th Graders opened the scene with Amy Grant s beautiful Lullaby ; the 6 th Graders were the townspeople and introduced sign language; 4 th & 5 th grade boys played the part of the shepherds while the girls were the angels. The 8 th Grade students covered the main characters in the play. This is always our annual birthday gift to the Child Jesus. Every year we pray that He will smile upon us and bless us and bring peace and joy to our audiences. Please remember in your prayers, the men and women serving in our Nation s Armed Forces. 5 Learning through Technology FOURTH SUNDAY OF ADVENT Mommy, Mommy, I went to the Bronx Zoo today! Daddy, do you know why leaves change color I do. Grandpa, I got to ask a real scientist six questions about plasma and lightning. These are the conversations that are occurring over the phone or around the dinner table among families of children from St. Ann School. They re busy chatting about a whole new world that has been opened to them with the school s launch of their Distance Learning program. In just the first few weeks, every student has experienced this new educational media which allows students to take virtual field trips or to receive instruction from a remote presenter over an interactive video conferencing connection. So far, students have learned about the life cycle of a leaf through the Camden Children s Garden Center. Some visited the Bronx Zoo and learned about Food Webs by analyzing their own body s energy needs and the role of various plants and animals in the food chain. Others learned about the life and legends of St. Nicholas and even learned a traditional Swedish holiday dance. Most notably, the 7th and 8th grade Science class had their textbooks come to life as Dr. Jose Lopez, a physicist from the Center for Micro plasma Science & Technology at St. Peter s College in Jersey City, talked about how air, motion and friction relate to plasma. Dr. Lopez also shared practical examples of the research that his team is pursuing, like how plasmas can be used to purify drinking water or how they can reduce drag on an airplane s wing to improve fuel efficiency in flight. At the conclusion of this presentation, Sr. Rita Tassinari, Vice-Principal noted, our students learned today about topics that aren t even written in textbooks yet! We are excited that our new Distance Learning program is providing our teachers with opportunities to illustrate and augment their core lesson plans. It is bringing the world to our students and is stimulating their learning beyond the traditional classroom experience. They love it and are hungry for more! St. Ann School is proud to be the only parochial grammar school in Somerset County to have a Distance Learning program. It is latest technology implemented and complements the 30-seat computer lab and the in-classroom technology including computers and flat screen TVs. Would you like to learn more?
