3 MAY 13, JULY , 2012 ~ 6TH ~ SUNDAY 13TH SUNDAY OF EASTER IN ORDINARY ~ MOTHER S TIME DAY Dear Sisters and Brothers, A year ago, on the television news, we were introduced to a little Somali boy, seven-month-old Minhaj Gedi Farah. His family had lost everything in Somalia through war and severe drought and had walked for days to reach a refugee camp in northern Kenya called Dadaab. By the time they arrived, Minhaj was too weak to cry, and had the hollow cheeks of a severely malnourished child. His arms were twig-like and his skin crumpled like thin leather under the pressure of his mother s hands. He was one of the victims of the worst famine in East Africa for sixty years. The Dadaab camp had more than one thousand refugees arriving every day, and of that number about eight hundred were children. Yet within a week, with nourishment, Minhaj was out of danger. Although well below the ideal weight, the wideeyed baby was looking around inquisitively and captivated with a journalist taking his picture. His mother was now smiling broadly and planting kisses on the baby s cheeks. Minhaj was one of those saved, in large part due to a massive international humanitarian aid effort. Catholic Relief Services an arm of the Unoited States Conference of Catholic Bishops provided much relief alson with monies from various other international groups. People around the world showed extraordinary compassion for Minhaj and others in the same desperate situation. In today s Gospel Lesson, Jesus brings back to life a child who is actually dead. On the three occasions recorded in the Gospels when Jesus raises someone from the dead, he demonstrates extraordinary compassion. Jesus raises the young man at Nain because of his pity for the widow. He raises Lazarus because he feels compassion for his two sisters. In today s account, he raises Jairus daughter from the dead because he has compassion on her parents. There are two aspects of compassion. We could call them the heart and the hands of compassion. Compassion means both the emotion experienced when a person is moved by the suffering of others, and also the act of entering into the suffering of another person with the purpose of relieving it. Compassion is more than a desire: it is also an act of will---a decision to become actively involved in alleviating a person s suffering. Thoughts For The Week Jesus whole life demonstrated compassion. He cured not just to prove he was God, but because he was God, abounding in love and compassion. Sinners, the sick and relatives of the dead flocked to him because he reached out to touch them. Compassion is the emotion that links us to those outside ourselves. It enables us, it drives us, to go beyond ourselves to the beating pulse of the rest of the world. Compassion is a key dimension of what it means to be fully human, the ability to feel pain that is not our own. We might call it the divine glue of the human race. So what can you and I do to make compassion more apparent in a world where we see great suffering every day? First, I believe, we can learn to be silent long enough to listen, to hear the cry of the other, to attend to someone else s needs. Listening is at the centre, the very core of compassion. But listening is not enough. Second, we have to be willing to remember the sharp edge of our own past sufferings. To ignore pain or to deny it or suppress it does not prepare us to respond well to what we hear from others. On the contrary, this is exactly what leads us to tell other people to get over it, to ignore it, to offer it up. It is those attitudes that can perpetuate injustice, that make the pain of the world invisible to the world. The third dimension of compassion is experience. To get that, we have to step outside our comfort zone---to find our way into the lives of those who suffer until their sufferings scrape away our indifference to it. Fourth, we can develop a positive approach to humanity: identifying our hopes for human community, our ideas about the will of God for all humankind and our commitment to translate compassion into action. The Church, and we as individuals, can demonstrate God s love for the world through our own actions: sharing our wealth with people in need, developing a simpler lifestyle and challenging injustice and violence. In your charity, pray for the sick and the lonely visit them if you can. Also, please remember to pray for all who have wandered from the faith, and all who have died. May God always be pleased with us! Monsignor Michael Ministry Highlight Food Bank Carol Rittman We collect, sort and pack pasta and tomato products on the first Sunday of each month and transport them to the Somerset County Food Bank Network. Volunteers are needed to transport food to the Food Bank. This food is then distributed to needy Somerset County residents. St. Ann s has become known as the Pasta Parish as we supply most of the pasta distributed each month.

Summer Envelopes We sincerely thank our parishioners who mail or deliver your weekly envelopes to the parish office while you are out-of-town on vacations this summer. As many of you understand, our parish expenses and obligations do not take a vacation when you do, so it is very helpful to be able to rely on your continued support even when you cannot personally attend Mass here. Remember Net-Charge (electronic giving) is also available. Please visit our website at: to signup. Welcome! Our new parishioners are most welcome and are urged to pick up a registration form at the rectory. In addition, please notify the rectory when you are moving. Baptisms: Baptisms are celebrated each month on the First Sunday at the Noon Mass as well as the second, third, and fourth Sundays at 1:30pm. There are no baptisms during Lent. Arrangements must be made in advance and new parents are required to take a Baptism Preparation class held on the second Saturday of each month at 10:00am with Deacon Conrad in the CMR. Please call to register at Sponsors & Godparents: If you are 18 years or older, you must register as an adult and be Confirmed in the Catholic Church. If you are married, your marriage must be recognized by the Church. This is especially important if you wish to be a Sponsor for Confirmation or Godparent. It takes 6 months of attending Mass to be eligible for both of these privileges. Marriages: The common policy of marriage requires that arrangements be made at least One Year before the date of marriage and before any social plans are made. Either the bride or groom must be a registered parishioner. Weddings Masses / Ceremony may be scheduled on Friday afternoon, Saturday morning or afternoon; Sunday afternoon ceremony only. R.C.I.A. We welcome individuals who wish to become members of the Catholic Church and also baptized Catholics who have never received the Sacraments of Eucharist and Confirmation, and who are interested in becoming full participants in the Catholic faith to contact Deacon John R. I have been asked to remain At St. Ann School and will be doing some part-time teaching in the fields of Music, Drama, Library, Public Speaking etc. I will also be available to help when service is needed in our Parish or in our School. I extend my gratitude to all of you for your many kindnesses offered to me throughout the last nineteen years and also for your support of a wonderful school. Sr. Mary is an experienced Principal who has held positions in various schools throughout the years, as a teacher and as a Principal. During her time at St. Thomas Aquinas School in Rio Rancho, New Mexico, she was not only a Principal, but she also was assigned as the Superintendent of Catholic Schools in that area.
