Preparation classes are held the 3rd Sunday of the month after the 10:30AM Mass. Baptisms are held the 1st Sunday at the 12Noon Mass and the 2nd and 4th Sundays of the month at 1:30PM. SPONSORS & GODPARENTS If you are 18 years of age or older, you must register as an adult (see PARISH REGISTRATION) and be confirmed in the Catholic Church. If you are married, your marriage must be recognized by the Church. This is especially important if you wish to be a Sponsor for Confirmation or Godparent. Either the bride or groom must be a registered parishioner. Wedding Masses and ceremonies may be scheduled for Friday afternoon or Saturday morning or afternoon. Only Wedding ceremonies are performed on Sunday. 3 Dear Sisters and Brothers, In 1998, at the Winter Olympics in Japan, a seventeenyear-old speed-skating prodigy from the United States was tipped for future greatness. When Kirstin Holum was placed sixth in the three thousand metres speed skating and seventh in the five thousand metres, experts predicted a golden future. Her mother had been an Olympic gold medallist and similar success was forecast for Kirstin. But that Olympic Games would be the final time she would skate competitively. From that point on, her life began an entirely different journey. Speed skating was such a huge part of my life, she says. I still loved the sport, but I had this incredibly strong calling that it was time to move on and take a different path in life. In fact, Kirstin became a nun, joining the Franciscan Sisters of the Renewal, whose mission is to work with people who are poor and homeless. She became known as Sister Catherine. In New York she worked with some of the city s most underprivileged children in areas steeped in gang culture. She then moved to Britain, to work with underprivileged groups in the city of Leeds. Kirstin does not hide her background as an Olympian when giving talks to children. In her words: Their eyes get really big and they start paying a lot more attention. It is not exactly something you would normally expect from a sister. But I think it is good for them to see that members of a religious order can come from any background and any walk of life. It is all about your commitment to the message. I saw people making sports into the most important thing in their lives and I didn t desire that. Today s Gospel Lesson tells us to be prepared, because one day, perhaps when we least expect it, we are going to meet the Son of Man maybe at his second coming, or maybe at our own death. We will be called to give an account of ourselves to have a lifetime of faithful, loving service to offer God. So the Gospel is calling us to think about appearing before God, and to start preparing now. How do we do this? We re called to try to seek reconciliation with anyone with whom we re at odds; to forgive; to let go of our petty concerns and the ways of the world; to love and to be compassionate to all; and to spend the rest of our lives FIRST SUNDAY IN ADVENT Thought For The Week seeking God and God s kingdom. If we ve spent our lives seeking God and trying to know Jesus, then when we finally meet the Lord, we re going to be ready. None of us has any idea when this will happen, so St. Paul in our New Testament Lesson, calls us to live in constant preparation, as, he says, the night is almost over and daylight is at hand. In Isaiah s vision in our Old Testament Lesson, the nations of the world have positive goals too. They are not just running around in circles they have an aim and a destiny. They are on a pilgrimage towards each other and towards God, converging from all sides on the mountain of the Temple of the Lord. It is a very positive vision of the future, where nations will decide to beat their swords into ploughshares and their spears into sickles. When they reach their final destination there will be no more need for war. We are called to let God into our lives, and it is especially appropriate to work on this during this season of Advent. How can we do this? Could we give a little time each day in quiet prayer and contemplation? If we make space for God, our lives may become more influenced by the teachings of Jesus, and so we may choose to spend our time differently. Being more conscious of our own mortality in this world can make us more sensitive to using our time well undertaking life-affirming jobs and activities, and receiving all the gifts that come with serving others and working for justice and peace. Perhaps this thought will also help us appreciate all we enjoy most in this life the natural world around us and the love of family and friends. Advent is a time to make progress in fulfilling the kind of life that God has created us to live. So, we are called to stay awake; to pay attention to the many ways in which God is present and active in our lives and in the lives of others. In your charity, please pray for the sick and lonely visit them if you can. Also, please remember to pray for all who have wandered from the Faith and all who have died. Pray especially for the parents of the babies who have been killed through abortion this week. May God always be pleased with us! As Christmas nears, you are asked to make a special effort to remember the 2010 Bishop s Annual Appeal. If you have yet to make a gift, please consider doing so today. The Giving Tree In the spirit of Christmas, we ask that those wishing to purchase a gift for someone in need, please take a tag from the Christmas giving Tree this weekend. The Beginning of a New Church Year Advent is the beginning of a new Liturgical year. It consists of four weeks before Christmas when we consider the many years during which the people of God waited for the coming of the Messiah. Each Advent we relive this waiting period and prepare ourselves spiritually for Christmas Day and the entire Christmas Season which follows. How do we do this? We have special reflective prayers each school day in preparation for this sacred feast. We invite the joy of the season into our school by preparing a Christmas program for our parents, relatives and friends. We give money to the Holy Childhood Association for the poor people in Mission countries. We help needy people by sharing gifts for the family and toys for the little children. We increase our good deeds by helping others and showing kindness to one another. We ask our families to set aside some time each evening to pray together. We make every effort to remember that when we celebrate Christmas with special foods, wearing new clothes, attending Christmas concerts and programs or watching them on TV, enjoying our new gifts and toys we are really doing all this to celebrate the coming of Jesus to our world. Father Stephenson, world renowned, directed over 3000 performances of A Chorus Line on Broadway. The concert will be held on Sunday, December 19, 2010 at 2:00 PM at the Somerset County Vo-Tech School in Bridgewater. Advance Tickets are on sale now at the Rectory Office, reserved seating is available on a first come first served basis.
