3 MAY 13, 2012 MAY ~ 6TH 27, 2012 SUNDAY - PENTECOST OF EASTER SUNDAY ~ MOTHER S DAY Dear Sisters and Brothers, On the roof of the Reichstag building in Berlin there is a beautiful glass dome. People can walk around inside it and enjoy a marvellous view of the city. At night this dome is lit up, sending a bright light across the surrounding area. Norman Foster, the English architect who designed it, said it is meant to be a symbol of clarity and transparency, an open and honest sign of government for the German nation. As the person chosen to restore the building, Foster said that he was guided by four ideas: this famous building was a democratic forum; it was to be accessible to all people; there must be a sensitivity to history, and a sensitivity to the environment. It was into this renewed building, of the renewed and united Germany, that Pope Benedict XVI stepped, when he made his state visit to his native land in September On that first appointment of his four-day visit, the Pope addressed the assembled political body of the Reichstag. He gave a powerful address that day on those very same ideas that had informed the rebuilding of the parliament. The democratic forum speaks of our ability as people to study and understand our own human nature. All people must be embraced, none excluded. We are to learn the lessons of history, and to have a heart ready to listen to nature and what nature tells us. Very powerfully the Pope stated that the Christian faith has never proposed religion as a basis for social order, but has always appealed to human reason and to human nature. When the Holy Spirit of God came down on the assembled disciples, on Pentecost day, and the disciples began to speak, they addressed themselves to people of every nation, and those people of every nation were able to understand what was being said to them. This first act of God s Holy Spirit is a message of unity and love for all people to receive. This amazing power of speaking in different languages and of being understood was a great sign of God s Spirit at work in the world. But even on that first occasion, some people simply scoffed and talked about the apostles drinking too much wine. The world has not changed. That is why words, in themselves, are never enough. Witness is required. The testimony of a good life will speak more powerfully than any arguments or ideas, no matter how Thoughts For The Week brilliant they may be. For this reason we hear St Paul today giving us a list of the virtues that inform a holy life. The virtues are the fruits of the Holy Spirit. If we walk in the Spirit, these virtues will fill our life love, joy, peace; patience, kindness, goodness; trustfulness, gentleness and self-control. By contrast, the selfish life, the life that cares not about others, will demonstrate the vices that destroy human society and relationships sexual irresponsibility, jealousy and quarrelling among them. In today s world, where the very idea of truth is often sidelined in favour of utility and practicality, Pope Benedict made an impassioned plea for us to listen to our own human nature, and to learn what is the truth about ourselves. There, on the floor of the Bundestag, the German parliament, he made a request for a public debate. The Church is composed of human beings and we all have a part to play, and something to say about how we live in this world. In that debate, the Pope recognises that the secular world, our opponent in the debate, plays a very important role for the Church, as a healthy critic, calling us to greater purity and goodness of life. St Paul, great preacher and writer of so many letters that he was, still regarded his life as the greatest witness he could give. People could look at him and read his behavior, rather than his words. Be imitators of me, he said, as I am of Christ. So, on this birthday of the Church, we rejoice to be members of Christ Jesus, and to share in his Spirit. We pray to be purified of our vices, and to grow in the virtues, those fruits of the Spirit. We are called to witness to the Lord by the simplicity of our lives, and, as members of the Church, to walk in the Spirit, who will lead us into all truth. In your charity, pray for the sick and the lonely visit them if you can. Also, please remember to pray for all who have wandered from the faith, and all who have died. May God always be pleased with us! Monsignor Michael Ministry Highlight ~ Parish Providers Rick & Cathy Stevens ~ Parish providers witness their love of Christ to people inside or outside our parish through works of charity that respond to temporary, but critical needs. We need volunteers to provide various services for people experiencing emergency situations. Examples are: a special food collection, an item collection (e.g. furniture, dishes, clothes, etc.) special services (e.g. household or yard chores, emergency babysitting, etc.) and meal preparation.

4 MAY 27, 2012 We are a Stewardship Parish Offertory Collection May 20, $9, Poor Box May 20, 2012: N/A Thank you for being generous as you are able! Baptisms: Baptisms are celebrated each month on the First Sunday at the Noon Mass as well as the second, third, and fourth Sundays at 1:30pm. There are no baptisms during Lent. Arrangements must be made in advance and new parents are required to take a Baptism Preparation class held on the second Saturday of each month at 10:00am with Deacon Conrad in the CMR. Please call to register at Sponsors & Godparents: If you are 18 years or older, you must register as an adult and be Confirmed in the Catholic Church. If you are married, your marriage must be recognized by the Church. This is especially important if you wish to be a Sponsor for Confirmation or Godparent. It takes 6 months of attending Mass to be eligible for both of these privileges. Marriages: The common policy of marriage requires that arrangements be made at least One Year before the date of marriage and before any social plans are made. Either the bride or groom must be a registered parishioner. Weddings Masses / Ceremony may be scheduled on Friday afternoon, Saturday morning or afternoon; Sunday afternoon ceremony only. Please remember - in a Catholic School, your children are always free to practice their faith. They will also receive a good education with a strong foundation. It is one of the best gifts we can give your child. Our prayers are with you. ST. ANN GOLDEN AGE CLUB Our Golden Age Club members will meet Monday, June 4th at 1:30pm in the school cafeteria. There are different kinds of spiritual gifts but the same Spirit; there are different forms of service but the same Lord; there are different workings but the same God who produces all of them in everyone. - 1 CORINTHIANS 12:4-6 By giving each of us different gifts, God made sure that the Church would have the combination of talent and treasure that was needed to do God s work. However, what happens if one of us does not bring our contribution to God s altar? God s plan is not fulfilled. Some important work is left undone. WE ARE IN NEED OF YOUR BAKING TALENTS The Festa Cake Wheel is looking for bakers to provide baked goods to use as prizes. This is always a popular wheel and a great way to show off your talents. Cakes, cookies, brownies or whatever is your specialty. We ask that the items not need refrigeration and can be brought to the school cafeteria any day of the Festa. A sign up sheet will be available at the entrances of the Church beginning next weekend.
