SPONSORS & GODPARENTS If you are 18 years of age or older, you must register as an adult (see PARISH REGISTRATION) and be confirmed in the Catholic Church. If you are married, your marriage must be recognized by the Church. This is especially important if you wish to be a Sponsor for Confirmation or Godparent. Either the bride or groom must be a registered parishioner. Wedding Masses and ceremonies may be scheduled for Friday afternoon or Saturday morning or afternoon. Only Wedding ceremonies are performed on Sunday. PARISH REGISTRATION Any new family who has moved into the Parish are an adult or family member 18 years or older are invited to register after any Sunday Mass or contact the rectory.

3 Dear Sisters and Brothers, An ancient philosopher wrote that there is an art to being generous. If people have the resources to be generous, they can do so without vulgar showing off, or making those who receive their generosity feel patronised. People who are truly generous are those who do not value money in itself, but only in as much as they can spend it usefully on others. There are also two contrasting sorts of character. One is the prodigal person who spends money foolishly, like the son in the parable. The other is the miser, who hoards money, and even steals the goods of others. The character Harpagon in the play The Miser, by the seventeenth-century French playwright Molière, is such a person. He defrauds his own horses of their oats, and instead of giving people a good day, he lends them a good day. There is also an art to receiving. We can receive presents, or help, or a compliment, graciously. Or we can be ungrateful, sullen and resentful. Even worse, we can resent the good things that come to others, and be eaten up with envy. The same ancient philosopher, Aristotle, defined envy as a kind of distress at apparent success on the part of one s equals. It is, then, feeling put out, or even bitter, at the good that happens to other people, especially people close to us, or of the same group. The ancient world had a special term for this: it was called the evil eye. In the Greek language of today s Gospel Lesson, at the end of the story the landowner asks the grumbling worker, have you got the evil eye because I am generous? In St. Mark s Gospel, Jesus lists the evil eye as one of the things that come out of people to make them unclean. There was much superstition attached to this phrase, but in the New Testament it is a vivid image for intense envy and resentment. This was thought to show itself in people s looks, just as we might say green with envy. So in our Gospel Lesson we have the contrast of the generosity of the landowner and the envious reaction of the laborers. We might see the landowner as representing God, and the workers as the people of the Old Testament. The Jewish people had labored under the Law of Moses for many centuries, and now that Jesus was also bringing in the Gentiles to be saved, some of them felt a certain resentment. SEPTEMBER 18, 2011 Thoughts For The Week Certainly St. Paul s letters show us that there were disputes between Jewish Christians and those who were converted from paganism. Such tensions would be natural in the formation of a new society. Perhaps the parable is a warning against being blinded by tensions such as this. But I believe the parable has a wider application than the early Church. We may at times react against the injustice that we see in the world, and often we are right to do so. There is a proper sense of indignation when we see a real injustice done. However, as far as our relations with God go, we have no cause for envy. Like the landowner in the parable, God bestows gifts to people according to the divine will, and everyone has been given some gift. The basic gift is, of course, life. Without that, we would have nothing either to moan about or to rejoice in. As St. Paul asks the Corinthians in this regard, What do you possess that you have not received? (1 Corinthians 4:7). Envying other people s money, good looks, fame, or even spiritual gifts, does nothing except to corrode the character of the person doing the envying. Thinking about the gifts we have been given ourselves, and being grateful for them, is more positive and more gracious. We can also rejoice in the gifts that God gives to others. As members of the Church, we are all part of the same body, and can therefore share in each other s gifts. So rather than begrudging God s generosity or moaning about what we don t have, we can bear in mind the words of Blessed John Henry Newman: God has created me to do him some definite service. He has committed some work to me which he has not committed to another. I am a link in a chain, a bond of connection between persons. He has not created me for naught. I shall do good; I shall do his work. In your charity, pray for the sick and the lonely--visit them if you can. Also, please remember to pray for all who have wandered from the Faith and all who have died. May God always be pleased with us! Monsignor Michael This week s Stewardship Note You too go into my vineyard. - Matthew 20:4 In today's Gospel we see how much Our Lord wants us to be co-workers with Him. Just as the Master went out repeatedly to invite more workers into his vineyard, so Our Lord continually calls us to participate more fully in the Church. Life on earth is short. How many times does God have to call us, before it is too late? Even the workers who entered the vineyard late were paid well. Do we want to be left standing alone in the marketplace for all eternity because we failed to fulfill our jobs as Christian stewards

Basilone Parade Sun. Sept. 25th the Borough of Raritan will host it 30th Annual John Basilone Memorial Parade Celebration honoring its National WWII hero, Marine Sgt. John Basilone. The parade will begin at 1:00pm in Raritan. Music of the WWII Era will be provided by Summerswing Orchestra on Fri., Sept. 23 from 7 9pm at the Basilone Statue followed by fireworks. The 3rd Basilone Fun Run will begin at 9am at the Statue on Sat., September 24th. The 22nd Commemorative Concert, presented by Quantico Marine Corps Band, will be held Sat., Sept. 24th at 2pm & 7pm at RVCC. A memorial Mass will be celebrated at St. Ann s Church at 10:30am. SEPTEMBER 18, 2011 Why Was The Roman Missal Revised Corinna Laughlin and Jill Maria Murdy As part of the renewal of the liturgy of the Second Vatican Council, the bishops of the Church agreed that liturgical texts could be translated and prayed in vernacular languages. The liturgical books themselves were also reformed. The result was the 1969 Missal of Paul VI, which reflected the revised liturgy (sometimes called the novus ordo). This book, published in Latin, was subsequently translated into vernacular languages around the world. In 2000, to commemorate the new millennium, Pope John Paul II published a third edition of The Roman Missal. This edition includes prayers for many saints days and more options for prayers. As with all liturgical books, this third edition of the Roman Missal was first published in Latin. Since its publication, national Bishops conferences have been working to translate the Missal into the local languages of the people. A considerable amount of time has been spent preparing the English translation, which will have a significant impact on all who pray the Mass in English.
