2 SECOND SUNDAY OF ADVENT DECEMBER 4, 2016 Dear Sisters and Brothers, I believe I have totally FAILED some of you. How? I FAILED to convince some of you of the seriousness of our financial difficulties, and therefore I have FAILED to convince some of you to become more generous stewards of your treasure by raising your contributions in our Sunday Offertory Collections. I thank those who have generously responded already. Remember, our parish cannot operate our ministries without your commitment to help. If you have not done so, please consider how much you can raise your contributions, and begin doing so as soon as possible. I ask you to do your best to help us meet our deficit. Please prayerfully consider what you can do. Thank you for your kind consideration of my request. Judgement is not as popular as it was, at least not in church. In a previous age sermons about the judgement of God were common and illustrated by vivid descriptions of what happened to us if we ended up in hell. In earlier times, painters often adorned church walls with graphic murals depicting the last judgement and the awful punishments awaiting those found wanting. Just think of the fresco of the Last Judgment painted by Michelangelo on the wall above the altar in the Sistine Chapel. But hell-fire sermons and vivid wall paintings are not so common today, and not surprisingly many people breathe a sigh of relief. After all, those kinds of sermons and paintings seemed to present God as a punishing Father and could induce all the wrong kinds of fear. There were indeed exaggerations, but can we actually get rid of judgement altogether? The English novelist, Evelyn Waugh, in his 1953 novel Love among the Ruins, tells of an old, hardened, criminal called Mr. Sweat. After a life dedicated to crime he is sent to a reformatory where kind people try to understand him and cure him. But Mr. Sweat objects to all this care lavished upon him. He sees it as patronising. He claims that people no longer understand crime and he cites the first time he was brought up before a judge when he was young. This judge certainly did not mince his words: My lad, he said, you are embarking upon a course of life that can lead only to disaster and degradation in this world and everlasting damnation in the next. Now Mr. Sweat really appreciated that--- It was real talking, he said, and showed a personal interest. On this second Sunday of Advent, we encounter the strange figure of St. John the Baptist, dressed in camel skins and eating locusts like the prophet Elijah. Both these prophetic figures had no qualms about judgement. In a way they both represent what we see throughout the Bible, namely, that the judgement of God leads to salvation. Can you imagine an Advent without John the Baptist? In this season Jesus and he are inseparable. He provides the contrast to the Lord Jesus. He helps us to see where Christ is, to prepare the way so that Christ can come to us at Christmas. He stands outside society in the desert, a prophet who does not accept the way we see ourselves. The Baptist preaches judgement so that people can be freed from their lack of true knowledge of themselves. They are complacent because, as John tells the Pharisees and Sadducees, they proudly call themselves children of Abraham. But their self-confidence is mistaken because, most importantly, they don t produce any fruit. John calls for repentance, a change in the way they think about themselves. Even now, he says, the axe is laid to the roots of the trees, so that any tree which fails to produce good fruit will be cut down and thrown on the fire. That is the fire of judgement. He then points forward to Christ, who will baptize not just with water but with the Holy Spirit and fire. Christ too will sort out the chaff from the wheat. But it s important to see that both John and Jesus preach judgement in order that there may be salvation. It is not so much about God as about ourselves. God treats us with respect, for we have the dignity of human beings created in God s image who can choose in freedom. St. John the Baptist, like Jesus, urges us to choose the way of God, for that is the way to salvation. The Baptist today is pointing us to the Lord Jesus, just as he did for the people who came to hear him preach in his day. He challenges us to repent that we may be saved. He convicts and Jesus absolves. So the Church urges us in Advent to seek out the Sacrament of Reconciliation, for it provides the healing we need. It gives us the opportunity to examine our lives and so see what is keeping us from Christ this Advent. Although Jesus teaches us that we are not to judge other people, we can use this opportunity to judge our own lives so that we may accept God s forgiveness and healing. We acknowledge those things that weigh us down and keep us from God so that we may be liberated. Then when we are absolved we shall be ready to welcome our saviour when he comes to us at Christmas. Many thanks to the men of our Knights of Columbus Council under the leadership of our past Grand Knight Jim Janci and our present Grand Knight Hugh Gallagher, who worked to set up all the Memorial Christmas trees on Saturday. Along with some of our ushers, they were able to complete the job in no time and were finished by 10:30 am. Next Saturday they will decorate the trees, getting them ready for the lighting ceremony on December 10 th after the 4pm Mass. If you are interested in helping, call the rectory office and leave you name. For your information, our Vicar General, Msgr. William Benwell, who served as a deacon here at Saint Ann s many years ago, will celebrate the Mass and perform the blessing and lighting. In your charity, pray for the sick and the lonely visit them if you can. Please remember to pray for all who have wandered from the Faith and all who have died especially M. R B, C F F N. Also, pray for the souls of the faithful departed of our Parish family. May God always be pleased with us! Monsignor Michael As we consider our Scripture Lessons for today, let us remember: that hell-fire sermons about judgement are not popular today; that John the Baptist judges his contemporaries so they may be saved and prepare the way for Jesus; and that we can judge ourselves in confession so that we may be healed by Christ this Advent. Let us open our hearts to the promptings of the Holy Spirit, and may God always be pleased with us. Amen!

His wealthy parents, who raised him to be a devout Christian, obeying Jesus words to sell what you own & give the money to the poor, Nicholas used his whole inheritance to assist the needy, the sick & the suffering. He dedicated his life to serving God & was made Bishop of Myra while still a young man. In the best known story, he gave 3 bags of gold to a widower whose daughters didn t have dowries & faced being sold into servitude. According to legend, St. Nicholas dropped the gold through their window under the cover of night, the later inspiration for giving gifts on the eve of the feast. The true story of Santa Claus begins with St. Nicholas, who was born during the 3rd-century in the village of Patara.
