THE BAPTISM OF THE LORD JANUARY 10, 2016

2 THE BAPTISM OF THE LORD JANUARY 10, 2016 Dear Sisters and Brothers, Merry Christmas and Happy New Year! Once when Mother Teresa was selecting children for an orphanage she was establishing in Ethiopia, a journalist challenged her about the children who were not to be taken. What are you going to do about them? he asked. Without hesitation, Mother Teresa fixed him in the eye and said, What are you going to do? The journalist returned home, gave up his job and started to raise funds to build another orphanage. His meeting with Mother Teresa had been a life-changing experience. The baptism of Jesus in the River Jordan was a lifechanging experience for his human self. From St. Luke s Gospel we gather that Jesus was at this time about thirty years old, the presumed son of Joseph. For the years that followed his experience of being lost in the Temple when he was twelve years old, we hear nothing more of Jesus except that he increased in wisdom, in stature, and in favour with God and with people. For eighteen years he had been pondering on what being busy with his Father s affairs was to mean for him. Now, while he was at prayer after being baptised, the Holy Spirit came down on him in the form of a dove and a voice from heaven declared, You are my Son, the Beloved; my favour rests on you. From this moment, Jesus, filled with the Spirit, set out to fulfil his mission as the anointed servant of the Lord, the Messiah, the Christ. There were thousands of people who had come for baptism by John in the Jordan. They were expecting something to happen and wondered if John himself might be the Christ. John, however, pointed them away from himself. He baptised only in water, but he was to be followed by someone more powerful than himself who would baptise with the Holy Spirit and with fire. If they had experienced something powerful in John, how much more could they expect from the Christ! W It has to be said that for most of those witnessing the baptism described here, it will be a fairly bewildering ritual, but for those of us with faith something extraordinary is taking place. The symbolic actions of the rite of baptism are in fact the sacramental signs that bring about what is described in our second reading, he saved us, by means of the cleansing water of rebirth and by renewing us with the Holy Spirit which he has so generously poured over us through Jesus Christ our saviour. It is in this way that we are born again of water and the Holy Spirit and enabled to enter the kingdom of heaven. Whether we appreciate the fact or not, this really is the most life-changing experience that can possibly happen to us. It took Jesus thirty years to grow in wisdom, in stature and in favour with God and with people before the events of his baptism changed his life. He recognised that he was being anointed with the power of the Holy Spirit; he was truly the Christ. The voice from heaven affirmed that he was truly the beloved Son of God. He knew that he had been sent to bring Good News to those who were poor. Maybe now we should spend some time pondering on what baptism really means for us. We have been exposed to the cleansing water of rebirth and renewed with the Holy Spirit. We have been forged in the furnace of the fire of God s love to join Jesus in his mission to bring God s saving love to our world. We have seen what happened to Jesus. We have seen what happened to Mother Teresa and the journalist who challenged her. We now know Mother Teresa as Blessed Teresa of Calcutta soon to be Saint Theresa of Calcutta. So now what are you going to do? In your charity, pray for the sick and the lonely visit them if you can. Please remember to pray for all who have wandered from the Faith and all who have died. Also, pray for the souls of the faithful departed of our Parish family. May God always be pleased with us! Monsignor Michael OUR SCRIPTURE LESSONS REMIND US: that Mother Teresa was challenged about the children she was not taking into a new orphanage; that after thirty years of hidden life, the baptism of Jesus marked the beginning of his public ministry; and that Baptism today still really is a life-changing experience for us. May God always be pleased with us. Amen!

John answered them all, I baptize you with water; but he who is mightier than I is coming he will baptize you with the Holy Spirit... (Luke 3:16) THE FEAST OF THE BAPTISM OF THE LORD January 10 Ques?on: "Why was Jesus bap?zed? Why was Jesus' bap?sm important? Answer: At first glance, it seems that Jesus bap)sm has no purpose at all. John s bap)sm was the bap)sm of repentance (Mahew 3:11), but Jesus was sinless and had no need of repentance. Even John was taken aback at Jesus coming to him. John recognized his own sin and was aware that he, a sinful man in need of repentance himself, was unfit to bap)ze the spotless Lamb of God: I need to be bap)zed by You and You are coming to me? (Mahew 3:14). Jesus replied that it should be done because it is fi6ng for us to fulfill all righteousness (Mahew 3:15). There are several reasons why it was fi6ng for John to bap)ze Jesus at the beginning of Jesus public ministry. Jesus was about to embark on His great work, and it was appropriate that He be recognized publicly by His forerunner. John was the voice crying in the wilderness prophesied by Isaiah, calling people to repentance in prepara)on for their Messiah (Isaiah 40:3). By bap)zing Him, John was declaring to all that here was the One they had been wai)ng for, the Son of God, the One he had predicted would bap)ze with the Holy Spirit and fire (Mahew 3:11). Jesus bap)sm also showed that He iden)fied with sinners. His bap)sm symbolized the sinners bap)sm into the righteousness of Christ, dying with Him and rising free from sin and able to walk in the newness of life. His perfect righteousness would fulfill all the requirements of the Law for sinners who could never hope to do so on their own. When John hesitated to bap)ze the sinless Son of God, Jesus replied that it was proper to fulfill all righteousness (Mahew 3:15). By this He alluded to the righteousness that He provides to all who come to Him to exchange their sin for His righteousness (2 Corinthians 5:21). In addi)on, Jesus coming to John showed His approval of John's bap)sm, bearing witness to it, that it was from heaven and approved by God. This would be important in the future when others would begin to doubt John s authority, par)cularly a<er his arrest by Herod (Mahew 14:3-11). Perhaps most importantly, the occasion of the public bap)sm recorded for all future genera)ons the perfect embodiment of the triune God revealed in glory from heaven. The tes)mony directly from heaven of the Father s pleasure with the Son and the descending of the Holy Spirit upon Jesus (Mahew 3:16-17) is a beau)ful picture of the Trinitarian nature of God. It also depicts the work of the Father, Son, and Spirit in the salva)on of those Jesus came to save. The Father loves the elect from before the founda)on of the world (Ephesians 1:4); He sends His Son to seek and save the lost (Luke 19:10); and the Spirit convicts of sin (John 16:8) and draws the believer to the Father through the Son. All the glorious truth of the mercy of God through Jesus Christ is on display at His bap)sm.

LUCY FILIPPINI (January 13, 1672-March 25, 1732) She was orphaned at an early age when her parents died. From there she went to live with her aristocratic aunt and uncle. Her vocation began under the patronage of Cardinal Marcantonio Barbarigo, who entrusted her with the work of founding schools for young women, especially the poor. She co-founded the Maestre Pie Filippini (Religious Teachers Filippini), a group dedicated to the education of women. The young ladies of Montefiascone were taught domestic arts, weaving, embroidering, reading, and Christian doctrine. Later the Cardinal devised a set of rules to guide Lucy and her followers in the religious life. Fifty-two schools were established during Lucy's lifetime. Pope Clement XI, in 1707, called Lucy to Rome to start schools which he placed under his special protection. In 1910, Pope Pius X sent the first five sisters to Trenton, NJ, to minister to the Italian immigrants. For Lucy, the Crib, the Cross, and the Tabernacle meant the presence of God, the only One who gives meaning and value to life. Her most beautiful and most apostolic invocation resounds like a shout, like a great prayer! Would that I were in every corner of the earth to cry out and plead with all People of every age and condition Love God, Love God! May St. Lucy be an inspiration for all of us as potential saints and perhaps saint-makers. St. Lucy Filippini pray for us. For more information on the Religious Teachers Filippini visit YEAR OF MERCY PRAYER Lord Jesus Christ, you have taught us to be merciful like the heavenly Father, and have told us that whoever sees you sees Him. Show us your face and we will be saved. Your loving gaze freed Zacchaeus and Matthew from being enslaved by money; the adulteress and Magdalene from seeking happiness only in created things; made Peter weep after his betrayal, and assured Paradise to the repentant thief. Let us hear, as if addressed to each one of us, the words that you spoke to the Samaritan woman: If you knew the gift of God! You are the visible face of the invisible Father, of the God who manifests his power above all by forgiveness and mercy: let the Church be your visible face in the world, its Lord risen and glorified. You willed that your ministers would also be clothed in weakness in order that they may feel compassion for those in ignorance and error: let everyone who approaches them feel sought after, loved, and forgiven by God. Send your Spirit and consecrate every one of us with His anointing, so that the Jubilee of Mercy may be a year of grace from the Lord, and your Church, with renewed enthusiasm, may bring good news to the poor, proclaim liberty to captives and the oppressed, and restore sight to the blind. We ask this of you, Lord Jesus, through the intercession of Mary, Mother of Mercy; you who live and reign with the Father and the Holy Spirit for ever and ever. Amen.

6 THE BAPTISM OF THE LORD JANUARY 10, 2016 RECONCILIATION & COMMUNION REMINDERS Dear Friends of St. Ann School, Just before we broke for Christmas vacation, I went classroom to classroom sharing the Holy Father s latest encyclical Laudato Si. The 99 page letter is about caring for our common home. It came out in May of The theme of our Earth in crisis is so uppermost in the mind of Pope Francis that he has been discussing it with world leaders, including our own president. The message is so important that the Holy Father insisted that the message be delivered even to children. I felt like Sister Mary Techno using our new Smartboards with each group. I had the privilege of discussing it with both our PREP children and the Catholic school students. Both groups were most receptive and eager to not just hear the message, but to show their faith in action by answering the Pope s summons of the faithful. Two short You Tube clips are dedicated specifically to extending the message to our youngest members. One is for the elementary level and the other for high schoolers. Without fairytale entertainment or scare tactics, the Holy Father puts his concern before our children as he did before our world leaders. He presents the problem and offers some solutions. What attracts the children is that Pope Francis trust and hope comes out strongly. He believes that every human being is responsible for the solution. He treats the children as young people empowered with gifts that they are willing to generously share with all of us. He addresses them as amazing, loving, creative and powerful individuals full of goodness and grace. If you have not already read Laudato Si, please do so. It can be found with a simple on-line search. If you find that you are like the parent who wants to know but does not have time for the full version, watch the high school version. I found it by searching for Laudato Si high school video. It is less than five minutes long but gets the point across beautifully. Let us learn to live in harmony and in love with one another and with the whole earth. God bless you, Sr. Mary Klersey, MPF Principal SOCIAL MINISTRY A St. Ann parishioner and her daughter needs a WEEKLY RIDE TO SUNDAY MASS. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ALSO~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ We are in need of a PARISH VISITOR FOR A HOMEBOUND PARISHIONER.
