2 TWENTY-FOURTH SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME SEPTEMBER 11, 2016 Dear Sisters and Brothers, A traditional feature of many Catholic churches in Europe is what s known as the St Anthony s Box. Its presence is often taken for granted by Catholics, but for newcomers or visitors to our churches its purpose may be somewhat confusing. Imagine explaining it to someone who s unfamiliar with it and look at his or her face, as you explain that St Anthony is the saint who specialises in finding lost things. It may help to add that the money put in the box is supposed to be for those who are poor. Finding lost things may seem like a trivial concern about which to ask for the prayers of a saint. Yet even the calmest of people can lose their cool if they have lost something. Sometimes we can become very agitated indeed, even if the thing that is lost is not all that valuable. That very human tendency to make a fuss about lost things, and to be overjoyed when we find them again, is the foundation of the three parables in the Gospel that we have heard today. Sometimes, in the Gospels, Jesus asks the people to supply the ending of the parable he has told. For instance, in St. Matthew s Gospel, he tells the story of the vineyard owner who sends agents to ask for the fruit of his vineyard. The people who rent the vineyard abuse the agents and finally kill the owner s son. So Jesus asks his audience what the owner will do. The people reply, He will bring those wretches to a wretched end and lease the vineyard to other tenants who will deliver the produce to him when the season arrives. In today s Gospel Lesson, we have three parables that the Lord completes; but what if he had stopped and asked the people to finish them? The first two parables would have been easy to complete. What would the shepherd do? He would go looking for his lost sheep. What would the woman do? She would continue to search for her lost coin. The ending of the third parable, although this story of the prodigal son may be very familiar to us, would have been less obvious to people hearing it for the first time. When we lose property, we want it back. When we lose people, our emotions are more complex. Anger and self-righteousness can get in the way. To lose a son is much worse than to lose a sheep or a coin, but we often collude in the loss of someone in our lives. Pride stands in the way and excludes love. The father in the parable seems to humiliate himself, but what is that compared to the humility of Christ s incarnation and the cross? The only treasure God cares about is people. Yet this is not a treasure that can be found just by looking for it. This treasure has to cooperate if it is to be found. That is why an opportunity to forgive and to be forgiven is a cause for joy and celebration. But remember that the mirror of mercy looks two ways. We are called to see ourselves and our own sins in that mirror; as well as allowing the one who is forgiven to see that he or she is forgiven. In the Dominican order, when an applicant seeks to be clothed as a novice, the would-be novice is asked what he or she seeks. The answer is: God s mercy and yours. There is an important truth there. There cannot just be a relationship to God that excludes all other human beings, and most of all in the matter of God s mercy. Human beings need to be forgiven by each other as well. Jesus taught his disciples to pray, Forgive us our sins as we forgive those who sin against us. Humility makes mercy possible, but the humility of God has placed mercy in our hands. We can obscure that mercy and make each other despair. Or we can give each other hope and enter into love. Mercy is not like a medicine, which we may take for a while and then, being healed, are able to dispense with. It is more like the air that we breathe. We breathe it in and we breathe it out. Mercy is the atmosphere of heaven. It is the air in which all the songs of heaven are sung. In your charity, pray for the sick & the lonely visit them if you can. Please remember to pray for all who have wandered from the Faith and all who have died. Also, pray for the souls of the faithful departed of our Parish family. May God always be pleased with us! Monsignor Michael As we consider our Scripture Lessons for today, let us remember: that we are always more concerned with what we have lost than what we have found. God too is a seeker of the lost; that we are more wholehearted about lost things than lost people; God is more concerned about lost people than lost things; and that if we are to live in Christ, we are called to live in his mercy. It was out of mercy that the Son became human. Let us open our hearts to the promptings of the Holy Spirit in our Scripture Lessons, and may God always be pleased with us. Amen!

6 TWENTY-FOURTH SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME SEPTEMBER 11, 2016 Dear Friends of St. Ann School, I recently heard a homily about WWJD and WYSIWG. What would Jesus do?, is a common enough acronym. The second one is less common but often spoken and inferred, What you see is what you get? I generally discourage students and teachers from living these infamous words. They insinuate that the speaker does not intend to improve or strive for holiness. It is not a biblical, Catholic or spiritual way to advance the Kingdom of God. But when combined with the guidance of Jesus, Seek and you shall find, there is huge merit. If you are seeking God, you will find Him. If you seek goodness, you will find it. The reverse is also true. If you seek gossip, you will hear it. If you seek trouble, you will find it as well. Now to WYSIWG. If you see with human eyes, you will see the human condition. This is not what I instruct the faculty of St. Ann School to do. We are to see with the eyes of Christ. We are not to see the disheveled child with tomato sauce on his cuffs, holes in his pants, tripping on untied shoe laces as he comes down the hall. We are not to see the girl with an uncombed mop, peeling off glitter tattoos from her arm, and a missing permission slip. We are to see with the eyes of Christ. He sees the man driving the ambulance to the hospital. This man will console you who are the car crash victim as he walks next to the gurney into the hospital. The boy and the man are the same. The boy s experience in Catholic school allows him to grow into the gentle, caring man who just wiped your tears, gave you courage, and brought you hope. The girls is the doctor who meets you in the emergency room. Her compassion elevates her encounter with you from professional, bedside manners to the experience of the divine physician working within her. The Catholic school experience does not deny the human condition of our children. We comb the hair, clean the shirt, tie the shoe, and love of the child before us daily. Yet, our philosophy of education uniquely uplifts our vision. We strive to enable the child to become all God needs and intends them to be. We educate in the present with our eye on eternity. A Catholic school teacher walks with one hand guiding the child and the other hand holding that of Christ. The teacher is the love flowing from God to the little one until the child is able to recognize and grasp the hand of God for himself/herself. The teachers will recommit themselves publically at a Catechetical Sunday Mass. They stand with the other catechists of the parish and receive a blessing, a challenge, and an identity. Encourage them in their work. They are God s A-Team. Though perfectly and thoroughly human, they have a divinely appointed task and calling. They need our help and support. Please pray for them as I do. Use the eyes of Christ to look out into the congregation and world around you. See the children. If you can make it possible for one to attend our school, please do so. They are more than your neighbor. They deserve more than reading, writing, and arithmetic. The formation of the soul and the eventual adult really does take a village, but a village that includes holy men and women. An education without God is as inconceivable as a fish without water or a home without love. Thank you for your continued love and support.
