3 MAY JANUARY 13, 20127, ~ TH SUNDAY ~ THIRD OF SUNDAY EASTER IN ORDINARY ~ MOTHER S TIME DAY Dear Sisters and Brothers How are you feeling this week? This is a particularly pointed question at this time of year. Some years ago the media began publishing information about blue Monday, the Monday of the last full week of January, which was reckoned to be the most miserable day in the calendar. The happiness of Christmas is fading, while its debts are making themselves felt; we begin to give up on New Year s resolutions; and all the time-- -in the northern hemisphere at least---the weather may be getting worse, and the days remain short and bleak. We struggle on, with no great sense of spring s being around the corner. These are no doubt feelings we can recognize---whether or not we re particularly afflicted by them this week. This seasonal downturn in mood is an example of the rhythms of modern life, with its periods of burden and stress, as well as its moments of entertainment and enjoyment. No human life---however comfortable or secure---is immune from the ordinary sufferings of just living through the years, quite apart from any of the particular difficulties or crises that come along. At times, even the stable, good routines of our lives can leave us feeling weary or dull. It is at a moment of ordinary routine that we hear Jesus great proclamation of good news in today s Gospel Lesson. He is attending the synagogue on the Sabbath, as he usually did. As he looks out at that familiar community, he knows the message that must be proclaimed: a prophetic message, of liberty to prisoners and of healing. It is joyful news, spoken into the places of poverty and burden. It is also clear that it is not always easy to hear God s message as the good news it is. The people of Israel at first weep and mourn over the Law of God. If the Law is heard as a list of burdens, or if it makes people feel that they cannot move forward---if it is a word of threat, more than promise---it will stir hearts to sadness. It is the hardest thing to hear the beauties of God s life and feel they cannot be for you. What Ezra makes clear in our Old Testament Lesson is that this Law is one of promise---one to which the people are called to respond with joy and feasting together. The joy of God s Law is held in this shared life; it is their stronghold. Often we can t hear God s good news because it doesn t immediately feel like good news for us. If Jesus is preaching good news to the poor, then isn t that bad news if I m rich? If he preaches freedom to captives, what about our wanting to keep some people locked away---in all sorts of ways---because that s easier for us? Being healed may be good news if you re sick, but Thoughts For The Week what if I m healthy and happy anyway? One person s good news may seem like bad or indifferent news to someone else. As Christians we are bound to Christ as one body---this is the great insight of St Paul s first letter to the Corinthians. As members of one body, we not only share each other s gifts and burdens, we also delight in each other s blessings. What is good news for one, is good news for all---even when it may seem personally costly to other members of the body. If one part is given special honour, all parts enjoy it. This weekend is a special one when we give thanks to God for our Catholic School and the education it gives to our children. Saint Ann s School has been doing so for forty-six years under the prayerful watch and leadership of the Sisters Filippini who have staffed our school since its inception. There in the name of the people of the Parish Family, we provide opportunities for our children to learn about Jesus and then to make his kingdom present in our world. Our children are taught that everyday living will always have its ups and downs; and seasons of the year, seasons of life and the heart, are ordinary parts of this. As followers of Jesus we are called, in all this light and shade, to go on witnessing to his good news. We can t always be jolly, or even happy; there are properly sad things to feel sad about. But we can become better witnesses to the joy of being a Christian disciple. Always giving thanks to God---for our food, for our friends, for whatever we have, or whatever love is shown us---is living the Good News. Keeping our talk away from what is negative about a person, or a situation, can make us more open to seeing things with something like the Father s loving gaze. Above all, living out the message of bringing happiness to places of poverty, and health and liberation where there is suffering and oppression---these things, lived out in the small ordinary kindnesses of our lives, can bring alive our faith as good news, for ourselves and for all people. This is the seed that is nourished in Saint Ann s School. It is the seed that should blossom in all our lives. In your charity, pray for the sick and the lonely visit them if you can. Also, please remember to pray for all who have wandered from the faith, and all who have died. May God always be pleased with us! Monsignor Michael St. Ann School to Host Open House St. Ann School will host an evening Open House January 30 th from 7pm to 8:30pm. Connections Program Catholic Charities is looking volunteers to participate in one-to-one activities and become a mentor to a youth of Middlesex County and Franklin Township. Please call Jeanette Nadonley at for more information. Consider yourself invited! This week we celebrate Catholic Schools Week. That means we will be focusing on all that makes Catholic Schools unique and successful. We begin with the 9:00am Sunday Mass, followed by a pancake breakfast sponsored by our hard working Home and School Association. The teachers and I then get to show off our school during Open House. The schedule for the week has been prepared with due pomp and circumstance. Catholic Schools Week is a national celebration sponsored by the National Catholic Education Association out of Washington, DC. Schools all across the country will be sharing their achievements and boasting of the opportunities they provide for our children. Here at St. Ann I overheard an excited student telling a new student, This is the best week of the whole year! Some things to consider when thinking about the power of a Catholic education, most students out perform their public school counter parts by an average of two grade levels on nationally norm standardized tests. Even better, it has been proven that the longer a child is in our system, the bigger the difference in scores. The business community favors employees with a Catholic school background. Studies have found that they are hard working, follow through on projects until completed, and in general bring a better work ethic to the company. Regarding presentations, Catholic schooled employees have a greater regard for neatness, spelling, and grammar. Even in the age of technology, Catholic schools get a positive mark in graduating students college ready with techno skills at their fingertips ready to use for success. To quell rumors passed about Catholic schools, no, we do not take the cream of the crop. No, we do not only test our smart kids. We test everyone and we accept almost everyone. We do not teach to the test but we do teach for mastery and for life. The theme for the week is Catholic Schools Raise the Standards. We do this in academics, in service to the community, in gospel values, and in self discipline. I read compositions from Grade 8 down and I can tell you that students know how to write, use vocabulary well, and can spell. I short, we have our act together. We do what we do very well. Our students are happy and focused. They know what is expected and what to expect. As I said earlier, consider yourself invited. Come learn and enjoy our difference. God bless you, Sr. Mary Klersey, MPF St. Ann School, Principal ATTENTION ALL HIGH SCHOOL SENIORS! Fr. James and your parish family would love to hear where you were accepted to college. Please Fr. James at jdefillipps@stannparish.com as your acceptance letters arrive! Fr. James would like to post your acceptances in the bulletin and display them in our Church!
