SPONSORS & GODPARENTS If you are 18 years of age or older, you must register as an adult (see PARISH REGISTRATION) and be confirmed in the Catholic Church. Only Wedding ceremonies are performed on Sunday. 3 THIRD SUNDAY IN ADVENT Thought For The Week Dear Sisters and Brothers, At the beginning of this year the world looked on in horror as the people of Haiti experienced a devastating earthquake, which left more than 200,000 people dead and many thousands more hurt, homeless and without families. News reporters covered the story in depth; and the cameras watched and waited to see if just one more person might be pulled from the rubble. Sometimes they didn t wait in vain, for in the days after the earthquake a number of people, young and old, were found in the wreckage of collapsed buildings and brought out to safety, even after it seemed all hope should have gone. It was a tribute not only to the rescue agencies, but to the ordinary people who had suffered themselves, yet continued to search, refusing to give up looking. The Haitian people with all their resilience did not give up hope and continued to struggle despite the desperate circumstances. Today is known as Gaudete Sunday. Gaudete is the Latin for Rejoice, the opening word of the Entrance Antiphon for today s liturgy. It sets the theme for the Mass. It may seem strange, then, that in the Gospel Lesson we will hear that John the Baptist is stuck in prison, awaiting execution. He seems to be very low and perplexed. He has heard that Jesus is living a life that seems to be a complete contrast to his own. Jesus, the one he had baptised and whom he believed to be the Messiah, does not seem to be behaving in a way that Jewish tradition had taught him to expect. John sends a message to Jesus to try to glean some shred of hope: Are you the one who is to come? The message he gets back will have been of great consolation to him and lifted his spirits in joy. The prophecy of Isaiah, which we hear in our Old Testament Lesson, has been fulfilled: the blind see again, and the lame walk, lepers are cleansed, and the deaf hear. This means only one thing: the anointed one, the Messiah, has arrived. John can rejoice. St. John the Baptist has been arrested and he knows he is going to die. Suddenly his world is not so certain and understandably he begins to question everything. It is a common experience. When faced with a crisis in our own life, many of us might respond in the same way. There are many people who have experienced the pain of feeling desolate and bewildered. It can be sparked by many things in our lives, such as the loss of a job, or the break-up of a relationship, or disease, or bereavement. Whatever our situation, whatever has caused such turmoil, it can rock our equilibrium and send us off course, turning our world upside down and leaving us not knowing what to do or where to go. In the aftermath of the earthquake, it may seem amazing that the stricken people of Haiti did not fall into complete despair. But the evidence is that they did not give up hope. Instead they turned to God in faith, confident that God had not abandoned them. Many of their church buildings had been destroyed along with every other building; but now they saw that they did not need their church buildings they simply gathered as a community to pray and praise and mourn together. In the midst of the rubble they celebrated Mass and they cared for one another. They believed, and continue to believe, that at the heart of their suffering and pain God is with them. It is fitting that, as we look forward to celebrating the coming of the Christ-child at Christmas, we take time today to rejoice in the deep faith present in the people of Haiti. Whatever circumstances we face in our lives, we can take comfort from the courage of the people there. It is not always easy, because when we face problems we are naturally impatient for things to get better. Yet when Jesus tells us that happy are those who do not lose faith in him, he promises that he will always be present in the midst of our lives and in whatever circumstances we find ourselves. Faith is living in the knowledge of this and letting it be at the heart of our lives. It will not always be easy, but today we are called to take the words of Isaiah to heart: Courage! Do not be afraid. Look, your God is coming. I want to apologize to you for the announcement that got into the Bulletin last week concerning a silent auction for Christmas Mass seating. It should never been put into the Bulletin. I neglected to tell my secretary that I did not want to have the auction. Please disregard last week s mistake. In your charity, please pray for the sick and lonely visit them if you can. Also, please remember to pray for all who have wandered from the Faith and all who have died. Pray especially for the parents of the babies who have been killed through abortion this week. May God always be pleased with us! Preparation for Christmas The Season of Advent is a busy time because there is so much to learn and so much to do in preparation for the coming of Jesus into our hearts. Here, at Saint Ann School - We have special prayers every morning during this season. We light one of the four candles on the Advent wreath each week to remind us of a time of waiting for Jesus to come. We give money to the Missions so that poor families may be fed and clothed and taught about Jesus. We bring toys to be given to children who otherwise would not receive any. We practice for our Christmas Program which brings spiritual joy to our audiences of parents, grandparents, friends, neighbors and graduates. We make a strong effort to be extra kind to our family members and to our classmates. Receive the Sacrament of Reconciliation in preparation for Christmas. We focus on JESUS in hope, joy, and anticipation.
