2 ELEVENTH SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME JUNE 12, 2016 Dear Sisters and Brothers, In the days of ancient Rome, when a man became a soldier, he went through a ceremony during which he gave his solemn oath---known as a sacramentum---to serve faithfully and to obey all the commands he was given. The giving of the sacramentum marked a transformation, a change of status from being an individual civilian to a person who had placed himself utterly under the authority of his general in the service of the needs of the State. Such thinking finds echoes in modern society. Here in the United States, the special status of the armed forces is expressed by what is known as the Military Oath that each one takes. It is recognized that military personnel give up certain rights that other citizens enjoy, and that they can be called upon to make the ultimate sacrifice in the service of their country. In return, the government undertakes a duty of care towards troops and their families, including the provision of adequate resources, health care, housing and salary. The oath recognises the special status of the troops and the commitment that they make, and is intended to safeguard their rights and dignity. The idea of a covenant---even of a sacrament--- underpins our Scripture Lessons today. In the Old Testament Lesson, the prophet Nathan reminds David of the covenant God made with him in making him king of Israel. By his holy anointing, God had singled David out changed his status and made him the shepherd-king to rule over and care for the people in God s name. In a sense, David was to be an icon or sacrament of God, reflecting the Lord s care for his people. As such, David was expected to rule as God rules---with justice and fairness, with compassion and mercy. Instead, David had abused his power and had engineered Uriah s death so that he could take Uriah s wife for himself. David had failed to honor the covenant, failed to live up to his responsibilities---his special status---as God s anointed. In contrast, in our Gospel Lesson, Jesus does act as the anointed one of God, the Christ. He exercises the mercy and compassion of God in pronouncing the woman free from her sin. He recognises the meaning behind the woman s symbolic actions---her weeping, her kisses, her anointing of his feet. He acknowledges her change of status from sinner to a restored daughter of God. Whereas the anointing of David as king had been negated by David s actions and reduced to an empty symbol, the woman s actions were full of power and meaning. They were genuine expressions of the forgiveness she had experienced. Simon the Pharisee was unable to see this. All he could see was the woman s sin, not the meaning behind her actions, not the transformation that had taken place in her. Christ was able to see truly. The woman s anointing touched him deeply and enabled him to look beneath the surface to the reality of God at work in her life. We are the people of the New Covenant, which has been sealed by the blood of Christ, poured out for the forgiveness of our sins. Like that woman, we have been freed by Christ from the power of sin and have become the beloved sons and daughters of God. Our status has been changed. Through our baptism and confirmation, Christ, the anointed one of God, has anointed us with God s Holy Spirit. But that anointing does not work by magic. As David shows, it is in our power to nullify the power of that anointing by seeking our own pleasure, our own will, rather than placing ourselves under the rule of God. But the woman in the Gospel shows us that transformation is possible, if we cooperate with the grace of God. Christ invites us to live in covenant relationship with him, to let the life of Christ live in us, as St. Paul says in our New Testament Lesson, so that we are able to live out our privileged status as children of God. We are invited to live as God s anointed ones in the world, to be sacraments of God s love, truly to see the world s need and to respond to it not simply to dismiss or condemn, as Simon did, but to extend God s love and mercy to those we meet. By our service---by our tears, our kisses, our anointing of those in need--- we fulfil our personal sacramentum, our commitment to live as people of the new covenant, so that God s healing anointing can continue to be poured out through us upon a broken and needy world. In your charity, pray for the sick and the lonely visit them if you can. Please remember to pray for all who have wandered from the Faith and all who have died, especially Richard Vetack. Also, pray for the souls of the faithful departed of our Parish family. May God always be pleased with us! Monsignor Michael

6 ELEVENTH SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME JUNE 12, 2016 Dear Friends of St. Ann School, We begin our week down three classes due to the promotion of our Pre-K and Kindergarten friends. And 8 th grade has been transformed into the newest members of the Alumni Association. It is off to high school they go. We sent each off with a special gift. Besides the knowledge, education, faith development, and personal growth of each individual, they walked out the door carrying a pin wheel from the principal. I watched Christopher hold his high above his head as he ran through the parking lot watching it spin in the sunlight. These round spinning balls of twinkling glitter are signs of our lives. Each of us adds more and more shiny sparkles to the pin wheel as we study and learn together. But we remain very boring all by ourselves. We are after all just folded paper resting on the stick that is our family who upholds us all the days of our life. We do not actually become our true selves until we engage in life and begin to move about it the world. Our movement is the beginning of our spinning. As we move through the air, we grow into something quite fascinating and beautiful. We become that which amazes and brings joy to all around us. But let us not forget God! He is after all the air that we breathe. He sustains our life, gives us a purpose, and calls us good. God is like the air, always there, ever present, ever surrounding us with His love and protection. Our prayer is our encounters with God in the life we live, the choices we make. But God is not stagnant. He is very much alive. God plays with us as He puffs out the wind, catches us and spins us into more twirling and giggling and lets us feel the joy of being alive. God is gentle. His Spirit does not blow so hard that we come apart from the stick. The stick is important and needed for us to succeed in bringing our unique gift to full development. Dear friends of St. Ann School, as you encounter our students this summer. Take time to talk and enjoy. If you get close enough, the glitter of your own wheel will be added to that of the school as you too begin to twirl as the Lord blesses you. Thank you for the blessings of your continued prayers and support.
