Providing greeters at funeral liturgies, preparing meals and house sitting are several ways parishioners assist families. 2 OUR LORD JESUS CHRIST, KING OF THE UNIVERSE NOVEMBER 20, 2016 Dear Sisters and Brothers, Our Old Testament Lesson from the Second Book of Samuel recalls the anointing of David to replace Saul as Israel s king, almost a thousand years before the birth of Jesus. The anointed one in Greek is rendered as Christos, in Hebrew as Messiah. Through his foster father, Joseph, Jesus, who descended from heaven to earth, is also a descendant of the Royal House of David. For his part, David was a shepherd who became a king. Jesus is a king who became a shepherd. In Chapter One of our New Testament Lesson, Saint Paul s Letter to the Colossians is known in Biblical history as one of the greatest spiritual hymns of all time. St. Paul uses these words to beautifully describe the sovereignty of the Christ, who existed with the Father and the Holy Spirit before the world was created. This divinity within the Most Holy Trinity is the source of Jesus kingship, authority and power. At his trial, Jesus would tell Pontius Pilate that his kingdom was not of this world. Indeed, Jesus kingdom comes from heaven, and those who are baptized are already citizens and subjects of the new and heavenly Jerusalem. Whether we are loyal subjects of our king and his kingdom remains to be seen, but of his mercy there can be no doubt. The Feast of Christ the King that we celebrate this weekend, was established by Pope Pius XI in Europe was still healing from the effects of World War I. The once great Catholic monarchies of Europe, had been replaced by fascists, socialists and communists--- all styles of government that are opposed to religious observance. Europe was beginning to turn away from God and his Church. The intent of this Feast was to let all people know that the kings of men will never match the great and glorious, merciful and mighty kingship of Jesus Christ. The Church was staking her claim with the powers of heaven. In today s Gospel Lesson, Jesus is mocked on the cross, even by those crucified with him. The good thief is aware that they have condemned an innocent man, undeserving of the most cruel punishment to which he was subjected. This thief, known in history as Dismas, is also well aware that he is in the presence of his Lord, Savior and king. His faith motivates his dying wish: Jesus, remember me when you come into your kingdom. There on Calvary, as darkness covered the earth and all hope seemed lost, a convicted sinner professed his faith- --that Jesus would live again and forever, that he alone had the power to forgive and to grant new life, but most importantly, that his kingship would reign in this world and in the next. Let us pray that in the darkest moments of our lives, when we find ourselves like the Good Thief---up against adversity, on the cross, persecuted, left behind--- that we, like him, will trust in the Lord who is our friend, confidant and our king. He will set us free and remind us that one day we, too, will be with him in paradise. In your charity, pray for the sick & the lonely visit them if you can. Please remember to pray for all who have wandered from the Faith and all who have died especially M F L B. Also, pray for the souls of the faithful departed of our Parish family. May God always be pleased with us! Let us open our hearts to the promptings of the Holy Spirit, and may God always be pleased with us. Amen!

OUR LORD JESUS CHRIST, KING OF THE UNIVERSE NOVEMBER 20, 2016 Dear Friends of St. Ann School, The Book Fair was a huge success. This is one of my favorite activities at school.

I also cannot complain about that little bit of extra income it provides the school. But the real treat of the event is watching parents and children in action.

The children love this tender loving care. Be it mom or someone else s mother that assists with the task of writing, the trust and faith in the adult is evident. Children speak in a hushed tone.

Suddenly, purple and blue hands appear in all classrooms. Highlighters are disguised as enticing toys. Our children love these things. But they still love each other more.

Three heads pour over the ins and outs of one colorful book. Inevitably, it is time to check out. One will be short of cash and the other will work out a private negotiation.

I want to take this opportunity to thank the Parish Religious Education families who also supported the fair. Our children may attend different schools, but we are one parish family.

They are not content unless there is some action brewing. May our words, kindness, and loving looks make us the grownups our children say, I want to be just like that man or woman!

Of course, I like it because it promotes reading. I enjoy the fact that the company we work with recognizes our Catholic nature and always provides us with a small assortment of faith based books. I also cannot complain about that little bit of extra income it provides the school. But the real treat of the event is watching parents and children in action. Our parents work so hard to make the event creative and fun. Every day is marked by a game or contest of some kind. Volunteers work with each little one to fill out a wish list of items desired. The children love this tender loving care. Be it mom or someone else s mother that assists with the task of writing, the trust and faith in the adult is evident. Children speak in a hushed tone. They lean into the adult and actually snuggle. It is precious to witness. Gadgets to support reading and fun abound. They are relatively inexpensive and big seller items. Every year I catch two or three students browsing together. One is always dropping money as they walk while the other two pick up after them and return the stash.
