Sat. during June Litanies After the am Mass For Reflection: Did I give one hour a day to God and the things of God, helping the needy, learning more about my religion, giving a hand in parochial affairs, advising those in difficulties, spiritual or temporal, praying for my own and my neighbor's needs yet even if I did, it is less than one-tenth of the free time I had at my own disposal. Today s good news The first reading is taken from the Prophet Amos 8:4-7. Amos was a shepherd in the kingdom of Judah who was called by God to go to Israel, the northern kingdom. There he was to speak in God's name to the people. This was in the 8th century B.C. The country enjoyed material prosperity but idolatry and injustice were rife among the upper classes especially. Against these vices the prophet spoke fearlessly, until he was driven from the kingdom eventually. Today's reading deals with the injustices practiced against the poor and the helpless. The second reading is from St. Paul's first letter to Timothy 2:1-8. What St. Paul is telling Timothy, the bishop of Ephesus, to teach his congregation is the necessity and the obligation of prayer. The Gospel is from St. Luke 16:1-13. These words of Christ warning those who would follow him on the road to heaven not to become the slaves of earthly things are applicable to all of us. Most of us may feel that this warning is for millionaires and business magnates. Our Lord didn't say so. There was not a single millionaire in his audience. He meant it for all of us, for what he warned against was not the just acquisition of this world's goods but their unjust acquisition, and the dishonest use of them when they were justly acquired. Two resolutions worthy of your serious consideration today in relation to earthly goods are: Never let them take up all your time. You have a far more serious purpose in life. Give it a little more thought and enterprise than you have been doing. Secondly, be grateful to God for what He has given you in this life. You might like to have a lot more, but God knows best. Work honestly and be generous with what you have. You are serving God, not money. God will be waiting for you where there is no currency, and where the one bank account that matters will be the good use that you made of your time and your share of this world's goods while you were alive.

But the Gospel warns that no one can serve both God and money. Which do I serve? Is my stewardship such that anyone can tell? We will rehearse and finalize all paperwork for Confirmation on September 24, Pro Life Information Series Part I According to the website of the Alan Guttmacher Institute, 43% of all women will have had at least one abortion by the age of 45. That s a lot of abortion, and a lot of pain. Those who suffer from the aftereffects of this procedure and seek guidance and counseling may call the National Office of Post-Abortion Reconciliation and healing at WE-CARE. The Guttmacher Institute, which favors the freedom to terminate unwanted pregnancies, indicates that about 14,000 women have abortions each year because they became pregnant after rape or incest:, At the same time, it indicates that in 1996, 1.37 million abortions took place. In other words, some 99% of all abortions have nothing to do with rape or incest, according to pro-choice sources. The Holy Father speaks of the protection of life as the fundamental realization and respect for the right to life, no other discussion of human rights can continue; it must be based upon the foundation of human dignity and right to life. (Vatican) Knights of Columbus Charity Ball September 24, 2016 The Knights of Columbus Thirty Fifth Annual Charity Ball will be held September 24, 2016 at the K of C hall, 6:30 pm till midnight. Pray for our Country as St. Faustina Prayed for Hers From the earliest pages of her Diary, Saint Faustina Kowalska writes of being directed to pray and sacrifice for her native land. In addition to offering on going prayer and being true to her vocation, the Lord and Our Lady assigned a variety of specific novenas to appease God s anger and bless her country. Nine days of holy hours, the Litany of the Saints, Holy Communion, and the recitation of the Chaplet in community was most times rewarded with heavenly visions of the graces derived from them, and St. Faustina was given to know the sublime importance of the prayers of those who are pleasing to God. Therefore, seeking every grace and blessing for our native land, all Americans are encouraged to pray for America as St. Faustina was instructed to pray for Poland. All rights presuppose the right to life. If the right to life is not defended, the defense of all other rights is useless. It becomes a lie, because it would mean the defense to the right to work, to society, etc. applies only to some, and not to all. (Vatican) Catechetical Sunday September 18th This year, the Church will celebrate Catechetical Sunday on September 18, 2016 and will focus on the theme "Prayer: The Faith Prayed." Those who the Community has designated to serve as catechists will be called forth to be commissioned for their ministry. Catechetical Sunday is a wonderful opportunity to reflect on the role that each person plays, by virtue of Baptism, in handing on the faith and being a witness to the Gospel. Catechetical Sunday is an opportunity for all to rededicate themselves to this mission as a community of faith. Saint Matthew Feast Day September 21st Matthew the Apostle was, according to the Bible, one of the twelve apostles of Jesus and, according to Christian tradition, one of the four Evangelists. Matthew was a 1st-century, the son of Alpheus. As a tax collector he would have been literate in Aramaic and Greek. After his call, Matthew invited Jesus home for a feast. On seeing this, the Scribes and the Pharisees criticized Jesus for eating with tax collectors and sinners. This prompted Jesus to answer, "I came not to call the righteous, but sinners to repentance." The New Testament records that as a disciple, he followed Jesus, and was one of the witnesses of the Resurrection and the Ascension of Jesus. Patron saint of bankers

6 Twenty-fifth Sunday in Ordinary Time 1 Timothy 2:1-8 Praying for Authority Our list of people to pray for is pretty long. We pray for members of our family. We pray for friends. We pray for the sick. We remember the dying. We also ask God to care for the dead. We know people in financial trouble, parents with difficult children, and children with difficult parents. We even pray for our sports team to win. Whenever there is a need, we are happy to pray. We cannot always solve someone else s problem, but we can pray for them, and lend our voice to the chorus appealing for God s ear. The First Letter to Timothy thinks such prayers are a good idea. I ask that supplications, prayers, petitions, and thanksgivings be offered for everyone. So the bible approves the idea of praying for others. But it is a little surprising to hear what comes next. Next comes an example of whom we should pray for. It is not the sick. It is not the family. It is not even the poor. Prayers should first be offered for kings and for all in authority. Say what? Kings and all in authority. There is a reason: that we may lead a quiet and tranquil life in all devotion and dignity. People in public office need our prayers more than we realize. We need them to govern so that they help us lead a tranquil, dignified life. When you pray for the needy, remember those in public office. Written by Paul Turner.
