Sat. during June Litanies After the 8:30am Mass For Reflection: DEVOTIONS Do I strive to walk in the light of Christ, or do I sometimes prefer the shadows? Have I ever failed to sense God s presence in my life? How does taking a second look sometimes help to clarify things? The books of Chronicles provide us with a second look at many of the key events in Israel s history. Written at the end of the fifth century BC, it covers the same era as the books of Samuel and Kings, but from a different perspective and with an emphasis on God s involvement in human history. The Greek name of the text, Paralipomenon (meaning things omitted or passed over ), gives us some idea of the intention of the author. Today s text is concerned with the conquest of the nation of Judah at the hands of the Babylonians and the people s eventual release and return from exile as brought about by Cyrus, king of Persia Cyrus, conqueror of Babylon, declares that the Lord has also charged me to build him a house in Jerusalem and he orders the exiles to return home and carry out this command. For the chronicler, both the exile and the return are divine actions within human history. John s Gospel is filled with contrasting images: death and life, light and darkness, spirit and flesh, truth and lies. In today s text Jesus says, the light came into the world, but people preferred darkness In Jesus God acts definitively in human history, sending his only Son in order that we might share in eternal life Like biblical Israel we are given a choice; whether we choose to believe or not, there are consequences. In Ephesians we hear again about the great love [God] had for us This love is manifest in the fact that God brought us to life with Christ despite our sins. Our salvation is not a result of our own good works but is grace: the gift of God made manifest in Jesus. God acted in history in Jesus Christ to free us from the power of sin and death and to offer us salvation. Our task, as children of the light, is to embrace that light and receive God s gift.

Jesus taught people by talking about some things they knew. Many of them were outside, involved in nature, everyday. In today s world, some of us are inside building a lot, but we can still see God s wonders. Look outside right now. What do you see? You might see green grass, blue sky, and thank God for the beautiful weather. You might see a gentle rain falling on land that will be a cornfield soon, and know that God is providing exactly what the farmer needs. Dear God, you are everywhere. Help me notice you inside and outside. For more information please contact Rich or Kitty Grenier at : or Saint Patrick s Day March 17 The dates of Patrick's life cannot be fixed with certainty but, on a widespread interpretation, he was active as a missionary in Ireland during the second half of the fifth century. He is generally credited with being the first bishop of Armagh, Primate of Ireland. Armagh is today the primary seat of both the Catholic Church in Ireland and the Church of Ireland, and both cathedrals in the town are named after Patrick. When he was about 16, he was captured by Irish pirates from his home in Great Britain, and taken as a slave to Ireland, where he lived for six years before escaping and returning to his family. After becoming a cleric, he returned to northern and western Ireland. In later life, he served as an ordained bishop, but little is known about the places where he worked. By the seventh century, he had already come to be revered as the patron saint of Ireland. The absence of snakes in Ireland gave rise to the legend that they had all been banished by St. Patrick chasing them into the sea after they attacked him during a 40-day fast he was undertaking on top of a hill. However, all evidence suggests that post-glacial Ireland never had snakes. At no time has there ever been any suggestion of snakes in Ireland, so there was nothing for St. Patrick to banish. Saint Patrick's Day is observed on March 17th, the date of his death. It is celebrated inside and outside Ireland as a religious and cultural holiday. In the dioceses of Ireland, it is both a solemnity and a holy day of obligation; it is also a celebration of Ireland itself. Patron Saint of: Engineers and Ireland Knights of Columbus St. Patrick s Day Dinner Dance March 14, 2015 St. Patrick's day Dinner Dance will be held on Saturday, March 14th at the Knights of Columbus hall. Bar opens at 6PM. Corned beef and cabbage will be served at 7PM. Dance with the music of Synergy from 8PM to midnight. Tickets will be available at a cost of from Jim , Pete , Tom or Jack and in the Council lounge. Tickets will not be available after Monday, March 9, Ethnic Celebration Our Ethnic Liturgy is this Sunday, after the 11:30AM Mass. The list of flags to carry in for the procession is on the table in the back of the Church. We also ask people of various languages to sign up to translate a petition into their native language. The chart is in the back of the Church as well.
5 Fourth Sunday in Lent Silence in Church Good Beautiful Holy Intelligent Silence is the Mother of Prayer Silence is good. We are meant to experience silence in the normal, everyday routine of life so that we can enter into uniquely human experiences. It is essential for each of us to safeguard and search after the times and places where we can experience the goodness of silence. Silence is beautiful. We are thirsting to get away from noise and distraction and enter into the beauty of silence. In many ways, the need to get away from it all is a hunger for silence. Our very being cries out to experience peace and quiet. Silence is holy. When we approach the Lord in the silence of our hearts He hears us. He is constantly speaking to us each and every day. But he will not shout over the noise that we allow to drone him out. It s important for each of us to take some time each day to enter into the presence of Almighty God. But above all, when we enter into the sanctuary of the Most Holy Presence of the Lord of Hosts, we approach his throne in humble silence. Silence, all mankind, in the presence of the Lord God, for he stirs forth from His holy dwelling Zachariah 1:7 When we come to church, we come to encounter and to adore the Living God. It is natural to want to greet others and catch up on current events in the lives of friends and parishioners. As brothers and sisters in Christ, it is a way of life for us to come to church and pray. Knowing the great difficulty it is for each one of us to find silent moments, it becomes a crucial obligation of charity to one another to help safeguard that sanctuary of silence before the Lord that we call the church. Let us seek the Lord together in silence that we may hear His Voice and receive His Word. As we do this together, as we fall on our knees before the majesty of god, united in the silent bond of prayer, we will delve into such a deep fraternal bond of faith to which no amount of conversation, or handshaking or reveling could ever take us. Christ the Holy Silence. Christ reminds us that silence is not just the absence of sound, but the profoundly full language of Heaven, for St. Isaac says, Silence is the language of the age to come. May we, as he did, love silence above all things. Upon entering the church, we should maintain reverent silence so that we are at peace within ourselves and with others. Lenten Soup Suppers Lenten soup suppers will continue during Lent from 4:30Pm to 7:30PM prior to the Stations of the Cross. Anyone wishing to volunteer will be appreciated. Donations are gratefully accepted. Stations of the Cross The Stations of the Cross are held each Friday at 7PM. Confessions can be heard from 6-7PM prior to the beginning of the Stations Sister Nazereta LENTEN MISSION: March 14-18, 2015 Given by Two Sisters of Mercy TOPICS: Monday AM: Healing Graces of Divine Mercy Monday PM: Mercy: God s greatest attribute Tuesday AM: Be merciful to others as I am to you Tuesday PM: Trust in God and Mercy towards neighbor Wednesday AM: Open wide the doors of My mercy Wednesday PM: Mercy revealed in Confession Eucharistic ministers plan to attend and sign in to keep your mandate up to date. Sister Confida O gracious Master, infuse in our hearts the spotless light of Your Divine Wisdom and open the eyes of our mind that we may understand the teachings of Your Gospel. Instill in us also the fear of Your blessed commandments, so that having curbed all carnal desires, we may lead a spiritual life, both thinking and doing everything to please You. For You, O Christ, our God, are the enlightenment of our souls and bodies; and to You we render glory, together with Your eternal Father, and with Your all holy, life-creating Spirit, now and ever, and forever.
6 Fourth Sunday of Lent 2 Chronicles 36:14-16, Deliverance from Exile What did I do to deserve this? When misfortunes come our way, we instinctively suspect that God is punishing us for something. In truth, we often find out we are our own worse enemies, judging ourselves more harshly than God would. Our own bad habits, our own selfishness, and our own negligence come back to haunt us. What did I do to deserve this? is the question residents of ancient Jerusalem asked when the city fell to the Assyrians and those who escaped death were carried captive to Babylon. The temple was destroyed, the city lay in ruins, and the people were made slaves. How did this happen? God s chosen people had a lot of time to think over that question and find an answer. In captivity, they came to a spiritual awakening. They realized that they and their leaders had been unfaithful to the covenant and insincere in their worship. They believed that God was punishing them. But what did God do? In time, God spoke to Cyrus, king of Persia, and commanded the ruler to free the people. They left their captivity, returned to Jerusalem, rebuilt the temple, and dedicated themselves anew to the sacred covenant. How has God forgiven you? What did you do to show your thanks?
