Sat. during June Litanies After the am Mass For Reflection: DEVOTIONS If those nine ungrateful lepers were struck again with disease some months later and returned to implore Christ for a cure, would you blame Him if He refused? The first reading is taken from the second book of Kings 5: Elisha from Thisbe in Galaad is the first of the great prophets in Israel after the separation of Israel from Judah. He lived during the reign of King Achab, who married a daughter of the pagan king of Tyre. She introduced idolatry into Israel which Elisha fought fearlessly. He is credited with many miracles, one of which is related in today's reading. The second reading is from the second letter of Paul to Timothy 2:8-13. In last Sunday's extract from this same reading, St. Paul exhorts his convert and disciple to be proud of the Gospel. He must guard the rich treasure of the faith he has received from Paul and hand it on to the next generation. Today, he reminds Timothy of the resurrection of Jesus, the crowning act of divine drama of our redemption. The Gospel is from St. Luke 17: The incident of the ten lepers happened as our Lord was on His way to Jerusalem, where He was to die on the cross so that we could live eternally. The Church brings it before our minds today, not so much to remind us of the mercy and kindness of Jesus to all classes, even the outcasts, as lepers were, as to make us see and be amazed at the depths of ingratitude to which men can sink. This is but one of many such examples of ingratitude that occurred during Christ's public ministry, most of those He miraculously cured forget to thank Him. In today's incident there was one, and he was the one least expected to do so, who had the decency to return and thank his benefactor. This pleased our Lord and led Him to remark on the ingratitude of the others. "Were not all ten made whole, where are the other nine?" Think for a moment. If those nine ungrateful lepers were struck again with disease some months later and returned to implore Christ for a cure, would you blame Him if He refused? Most of us would refuse. Yet we expect Him to listen to our urgent pleas the minute we make them, while we have not given Him a thought and never said one "thank you, Lord; while things were going well with us. God has already done His part in preparing this heaven for us. He is assisting us daily to get there. We need a lot of that assistance and one of the surest ways of getting further benefits from God (as well as from men) is to show true gratitude for the benefits already received.

Quoting scripture, he said the Angels are all ministering spirits sent to serve, for the sake of those who are to inherit salvation. We must be aware of their invisible presence, Pope Francis said Let us invoke them in prayer so that in every moment they remind us of the presence of God, and support us in the struggle against evil and guide us safely along the roads of our lives. Her works - especially the four best known (The Life, The Way of Perfection, The Mansions and The Foundations) - together with her more historical works, contain a doctrine which encompasses the whole of the spiritual life, from the first steps right up to intimacy with God at the center of the Interior Castle. Her Letters show her occupied with a great variety of everyday problems. Her doctrine on the unity of the soul with God (a doctrine which was intimately lived by her) follows the Carmelite tradition which had preceded her and to which she herself contributed in such a notable way, enriching it as well as passing the tradition on, not only to her spiritual sons and daughters, but also to the whole Church which she served so unsparingly. When she was dying, her one joy was to be able to affirm that "I die a daughter of the Church".1970, the Church gave her the title she had long held in the popular mind: Doctor of the Church. She and St. Catherine of Siena were the first women so honored. St. Teresa is the patron saint of Headache sufferers. Her symbol is a heart, an arrow, and a book. She was canonized in Knights of Columbus Communion The Knights of Columbus will have their Corporate Communion at the 9:30 Sunday Mass on October 9th. B.E.T.A. baby Bottle Campaign Our annual Baby Bottle Campaign has begun and ends on October 9 th. Please return all bottles even if you are unable to make a donation as the bottles are reused each year. Thank you. Checks should be made out to BETA. From the desk of Bishop Noonan: Amendment 2 :Concerns to Weigh Before Voting On Election Day, Floridians will vote on an amendment to the Florida Constitution that would allow the use of marijuana for debilitating medical conditions. At first glance, the proposed amendment appeals to a sense of empathy and implies safe and limited use by the infirm; however, closer inspection reveals that the framework established by Amendment 2 is problematic in the following ways: Potential for fraud and abuse The definitions and terms in the full text of Amendment 2 are vague. The amendment does not require a doctor s prescription that specifies dosage and frequency. Instead, the physician issues a certificate allowing the purchase of marijuana in any quantity and form. Ambiguities of Amendment 2 create opportunities for abuse and fraud similar to the pill mill scenarios experienced in Florida and elsewhere. Edible marijuana products present a significant risk Amendment 2 does not specify the physical form of the marijuana or limit the potency of tetrahydrocannabinol (THC), the euphoric component. Marijuana infused products (cookies, candies, beverages) are made using oils or other extracts that concentrate the THC potency at dangerously high levels of 40-90%. Marijuana edibles ( medibles ) are packaged to look like everyday food products, confections, etc. Accidental ingestion by children, some as young as 2, have resulted in a significant increase in emergency room visits and calls to Poison Control Centers. No assurances of quality, consistency in products There are pharmaceutical grade products that harness therapeutic properties of marijuana, such as Marinol, used for nausea and loss of appetite for cancer and HIV/AIDS patients. Other products are under development at different stages Allows for greater access to marijuana by youth Increased access to marijuana and its presence in the home has the potential of leading to dangerous experimentation by youth. In states with more lenient marijuana policies, attractive packaging and aggressive marketing campaigns are used to attract younger individuals to become lifelong users. Compassion compels efforts to care for the sick and to alleviate suffering. However, in this pursuit, society must ensure that those in need are not further endangered by exposing them to even greater harm. While there could be beneficial applications to the proposed use of marijuana, voters must carefully assess the risks and anticipated problems involved in amending the Florida Constitution to garner them.

Spiritual Works of Mercy Guide us to help our neighbor in their spiritual needs. (USCCA) Mercy with Francis Explores the Jubilee signs of mercy that Pope Francis will do throughout the year.. Moments of Mercy Give short monthly suggestions for working mercy into your everyday life. Meditations on Mercy Help us reflect more deeply on God s call to mercy through these monthly scripture reflections. Looking for a book selection to help with reflecting on mercy? Pope Francis: A Guide to God s Time offers an introduction to the biblical themes Pope Francis sees as being most important for Christians today as well as 91 full-color photographs that show the pope living what he preaches, bringing God s love and mercy to those in need. Pro Life Information Series Part IV Respect for the dignity of the human person demands a commitment to human rights across a broad spectrum. Yet abortion and euthanasia have become preeminent threats to human dignity because they directly attack life itself, the most fundamental human good and the condition for all others. They are committed against those who are weakest and most defenseless, those who are genuinely the poorest of the poor. (Living the Gospel of Life). Every Catholic is a missionary of the Good News of human dignity redeemed through the cross. While our personal vocation may determine the form and style of our witness, Jesus calls each of us to be a leaven in society, and we will be judged by our actions. America Needs Fatima A public rosary will be offered on Saturday, October 15th at 12 noon for the country and the success of the elections. This rosary will be said world-wide. It is the 99th anniversary of the apparitions at Lourdes. This is also the Feast Day of St. Teresa of Avila. The rosary will be said at 106 on U.S 1 just south of City Hall. October The Month of the Rosary The Church traditionally has dedicated October to praying the Holy Rosary. Daily Mystery Meditations The Mysteries traditionally adhere to certain days of the week. Monday: Joyful Tuesday: Sorrowful Wednesday: Glorious Thursday: Luminous Friday: Sorrowful Saturday: Joyful Sunday: Glorious "All generations will call me blessed" The Rosary, or Psalter of the Blessed Virgin Mary, is one of the most excellent prayers to the Mother of God. Thus, "the Roman Pontiffs have repeatedly exhorted the faithful to the frequent recitation of this biblically inspired prayer which is centered on contemplation of the salvific events of Christ's life, and their close association with the his Virgin Mother. The value and efficacy of this prayer have often been attested by saintly Bishops and those advanced in holiness of life". The Rosary is essentially a contemplative prayer, which requires "tranquility of rhythm or even a mental lingering which encourages the faithful to meditate on the mysteries of the Lord's life". "In recommending the value and beauty of the Rosary to the faithful, care should be taken to avoid discrediting other forms of prayer, or of overlooking the existence of a diversity of other Marian chaplets which have also been approved by the Church". It is also important to avoid inculcating a sense of guilt in those who do not habitually recite the Rosary: "The Rosary is an excellent prayer, in regard to which, however, the faithful should feel free to recite it, in virtue of its inherent beauty".

6 Twenty-eighth Sunday in Ordinary Time 2 Kings 5:14-17 The Kindness of Strangers You expect your family and friends to help you. You expect church and society to help you. But you do not expect help from strangers, from people of other nations, and especially not from enemies. The help we receive from God always delights us. But when it comes through an unexpected source, it brings special delight. Naaman was a leper who sought a cure. He sought help from Elisha the prophet. But Naaman was a Syrian, not among the children of Israel. Elisha had little or nothing to do with Syrians. But God inspired Elisha to help Naaman. Elisha ignored the nationality and focused on the illness. At his command, Naaman washed in the Jordan River seven times. He came out healed. Naaman decided he would no longer worship any other god in Syria. He would worship only Israel s God. The help we give strangers proclaims the gospel. In acting charitably toward others, we bring Christ to them, even to those who have not yet met Christ. When we receive the kindness of strangers, we learn how Christ is at work in the world in places we did not imagine. The miracle of charity proclaims the universality of God s work.
