Second Reading: 1 Thessalonians 4:13-18 We do not mourn death as those who have no hope. Gospel: Matthew 25:1-13 The wise virgins were prepared for the coming of the bridegroom. For Reflection: If, aided by God's grace, we are keeping his commandments, do we show contempt for those who give in to temptations which we did not have to meet? But if our hearts are far from God and our motives in our religious behavior is self-glorification, we are in a dangerous position Today s good news The first reading is taken from the Book of the Prophet Malachi 1:14b-2:2b, This reading states that this is a people who had wandered from the way of belief in God. The prophet chastises and threatens the priests of the temple. The second reading is from the first Letter of St. Paul to the Thessalonians 2:7b-9, 13. St. Paul is especially grateful that the Thessalonians received the word as from God, not men. The preacher of the word of God is well aware of his responsibility in proclaiming and preaching that word for he asks in the prayer before the gospel that the Lord will cleanse his heart and lips as he did Isaiah's for he is aware that it is God's word that is to be preached, not his own, or on his own terms. The Gospel is from the Gospel of Matthew 23:1-12. As this picture of the Pharisees is painted by none other than Christ himself, we can have no doubt but that the description given is the truth and nothing but the truth. In spite of their great knowledge of "the law and the prophets" the divine revelation God had given to the Chosen People and of their many strict observances of that law, they were not pleasing to God. All their good works and all their learning were spoiled by the vice of pride which made them seek earthly glory for themselves and prevented them from giving glory or thanks to God. Their religion was an empty external cloak which they used to attract attention and honor to themselves. Internally, they were so full of their own importance that there was no room for God in their hearts. Our divine Lord warned his disciples, and through them all of us, to avoid that pernicious vice of pride. It should not be hard for any true Christian to avoid this vice. We know that every material and spiritual talent we have has been given us by God, so we must give glory to God for any gifts we possess and not to ourselves. St. Paul reminds us of this fact when he asks us: "What have you that you have not received, and if you have received it why glory in it as if it were your own?" We owe everything we have to God and we should use all the gifts he has given us for his honor and glory, and for that purpose alone.

Veterans Day November 11th Freedom always comes at a high price. It requires a generous heart, ready for sacrifice... We cannot excuse ourselves from our own personal responsibility for freedom. There is no such thing as freedom without sacrifice. - Blessed John Paul II On the eleventh hour of the eleventh day in the eleventh month of the year 1918, an armistice was signed, ending the "war to end all wars." November 11 was set aside as Armistice Day in the United States to remember the sacrifices that men and women made during the war in order to ensure a lasting peace. In 1938 Congress voted Armistice Day as a legal holiday, but World War II began the following year. Armistice Day was still observed after the end of the Second World War. In 1953 townspeople in Emporia, Kansas called the holiday Veterans Day in gratitude to the veterans in their town. Soon after, Congress passed a bill renaming the national holiday to Veterans Day. Today, we remember those who have served for our country in the armed forces in our prayers. We will celebrate Veterans Day after the Mass on Friday, November 10, 2017 the program begins around 9:15. Invite family and friends as we celebrate all veterans. Please join us! May God Bless all our Veterans as we Thank Them for Their Service Candy Cane Bazaar St. Teresa s will be participating in the Candy Cane Bazaar initiated by Trinity Lutheran Church as a community wide event among the local Churches. 5 Thirty-First Sunday in Ordinary Time National Vocations Awareness Week November 5-11, 2017 The Catholic Church in the United States will celebrate National Vocations Awareness Week, November 5-11, This annual event is a special time for parishes in the United States to actively foster and pray for a culture of vocations to the priesthood, diaconate, and consecrated life. Cardinal Joseph Tobin, the Chair of the US Bishops' Committee on Clergy, Consecrated Life, and Vocations, reminds us that each of us in the Church has a key role to play in the witness of our vocation in ordinary circumstances, "As we go about our everyday life and most especially this week, we must keep vocations in our prayers, while, at the same time, being a mindful witness with our own vocation. We may never know how our lives may have an impact on someone else's story. Simply living out our call as disciples of Jesus Christ fully and joyfully in the world bears witness to the love of Christ as He generously bestows on each of us our own personal call." National Vocations Awareness Week, sponsored by the U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops' (USCCB) Committee on Clergy, Consecrated Life, and Vocations, is designed to help promote vocation awareness and to encourage young people to ask the question: "To what vocation in life is God calling me?" Parish and school communities across the nation are encouraged to include, during the first full week in November, prayer and special activities that focus on vocation awareness. Observance of Vocation Awareness Week began in 1976 when the U.S. bishops designated the 28th Sunday of the year for the celebration. It was later moved to Feast of the Baptism of the Lord in January. The USCCB Committee on Clergy, Consecrated Life and Vocations moved the observance of National Vocation Awareness Week to November to engage Catholic schools and colleges more effectively in this effort. Prayer for Vocations God, Our Father, thank you for calling men and women to serve in your Son s Kingdom as priests, deacons, and consecrated persons. Send your Holy Spirit to help others to respond generously and courageously to your call. May our community of faith support vocations of sacrificial love in our youth and young adults. Through our Lord Jesus Christ, who lives and reigns with you in the unity of the Holy Spirit, one God, forever and ever. Amen. Feast of the Dedication of St. John Lateran Basilica November 9th Today the Church celebrates the feast of the Dedication of the Lateran Basilica in Rome, the oldest and highest ranking of the four major basilicas in Rome. The Basilica of St. John Lateran is the cathedral of the diocese of Rome, the official ecclesiastical seat of the Holy Father, the Bishop of Rome, not St. Peter's Basilica as so many mistakenly believe. The Basilica is also called the Church of Holy Savior or the Church of St. John Baptist. In ancient Rome this was the church where everyone was baptized. It the oldest church in the West, built in the time of Constantine and was consecrated by Pope Sylvester in 324. This feast became a universal celebration in honor of the archbasilica, the ecclesiastical mother church, called "the mother and mistress of all churches of Rome and the world" Prayer in Time of Suffering Behold me, my beloved Jesus, weighed down under the burden of my trials and sufferings, I cast myself at Your feet, that You may renew my strength and my courage, while I rest here in Your Presence. Permit me to lay down my cross in Your Sacred Heart, for only Your infinite goodness can sustain me; Priests Retirement & Priest Care Collection November 12th Bishop John Noonan seeks to provide senior priests peace of mind as they age knowing that the Diocese will be there for them as any family would care for their loved ones as they age. I am grateful to our senior priests whose retirement is a blessing as they continue to serve the holy people of God. It is an honor to be able to offer them prayerful and pastoral support all the days of their lives. These priests have served with full heart and devotion for many years and continue to serve the Church in whatever way they are able, said Bishop John Noonan. An envelope has been provided in your envelope packet. Blessings to all who participated in the recent Rosary Rally only Your love can help me bear my cross; only Your powerful hand can lighten its weight. O Divine King, Jesus, whose heart is so compassionate to the afflicted, I wish to live in You; suffer and die in You. During my life be to me my model and my support; At the hour of my death, be my hope and my refuge.

6 Thirty-first Sunday in Ordinary Time 1 Thessalonians 2:7b-9, 13 The Message s Minister The minister is not the same as the message. But the message will have power if the minister has love. Paul, Silvanus, and Timothy distinguished between the minister and the message in the First Letter to the Thessalonians. When they had first visited the community, they chose a gentle style like a nursing mother caring for children. They brought the gospel in love, not with force. With such affection for you, we were determined to share with you not only the gospel of God, but our very selves as well. The missionaries felt very close to the people they evangelized. They shared their faith, which was extremely important to them, but they also shared their lives their joys and sorrows, their hopes and dreams. They all became friends. The community experienced together the love that Jesus had preached. The ministers and those they met worked hard together. They did not make the long journey in order to take advantage of the local population. Instead, they came on a mission of love, to preach about love and to be love for their new friends. God has entrusted each of us as a minister of the word. We are not the same as the message, but the message will be conveyed by how we live. If we live in peace and friendship with others, we will proclaim the gospel message in more than words. Written by Paul Turner. Copyright 2010, Resource Publications, Inc., , All rights reserved.
