Sat. during June Litanies After the am Mass For Reflection: DEVOTIONS How would I fare if I were called before the judgment seat of God today? Christ will come in power and glory to judge the whole human race. Today s good news The first reading is taken from the Prophecy of Malachi 3:19-20 and concerns the day of retribution, of judgment when the Lord will punish the wicked and reward His faithful ones. The second reading is from the second letter of Paul to the Thessalonians 3:7-12, in which he addresses those few in the community who were unwilling to earn their daily bread and were abusing the charity of their fellow Christians. The Gospel is from St. Luke, 21:5-19. The reason why these verses of St. Luke's gospel was chosen for today's Mass is that the Church wants us all to do a bit of spiritual stock-taking this morning. As next Sunday will be the special feast day of the Kingship of Christ, today's Mass is really the last of our liturgical year. Next Sunday, we begin our new liturgical year, the First Sunday of Advent. To help us to be honest with ourselves in our stock-taking we are reminded today that this world will come to an end one day. We do not know when or how, but that end will come. It will be followed immediately by the general judgment. Christ will come in power and glory to judge the whole human race. Each one will receive the sentence he merited while on earth. The just will enter with Him into eternal glory. The wicked will go to their place of suffering, sorrow and remorse. The thought of death is a frightening thought for most of us. We would rather put it far from our minds, but of all the other things that can possibly happen to us on this earth, death is the one and only certainty. It would be utter folly then to try to ignore it or forget it. It is not the moment or the circumstances or the fact itself of death that matters. The vast majority, even of those dying of a slow illness, do not know that they are on the point of death. What matters is the judgment which follows death. How will we fare in that? The Christian who wants to die in the state of grace, that is, in the friendship of God (and can there be any real Christian who would not want to?) has but one way of making sure of this. He is to try to live always in God's friendship. The man who does this by living his Christian life daily need not fear death. It may be a sudden death, but it will never be an unprovided-for death.

Dedication of the Basilicas of Peter and Paul November 18th The whole Church celebrates today the dedication of the two great Roman basilicas of St. Peter at the Vatican and of St. Pauloutside-the-Walls. The basilica of St. Peter stands on the site of the tomb of the Prince of the Apostles, where stood Nero's circus. It was here that St. Peter was executed. Recent excavations have shown that the present basilica which, in the seventeenth century replaced the ancient Constantinian basilica, was built over the tomb of St. Peter, just as the previous basilica. It was consecrated by Urban VIII on November 18, St. Paul-outsidethe-Walls, situated at the other end of the city on the Ostian Way, is built near the place St. Paul was martyred. It was almost completely destroyed by fire in 1823 and was rebuilt in sumptuous fashion by Gregory XVI and Pius IX and consecrated by the latter on December 10, The celebration of the anniversary of these two dedications has been kept, nevertheless, on November 18. Contact us now for more information: or visit svdporlando.org November Dedication The month of November is dedicated to the Souls in Purgatory, whose feast is celebrated on November 2. With the exception of the last Sunday, November falls during the liturgical season known as Ordinary Time and is represented by the liturgical color green. The last Sunday, which marks the beginning of the Advent season, the liturgical color changes to purple, representing a time of penance. During November, as in all of Ordinary Time (Time After Pentecost), the Liturgy signifies and expresses the regenerated life from the coming of the Holy Spirit, which is to be spent on the model of Christ's Life and under the direction of His Spirit. As we come to the end of the Church year we are asked to consider the end times, our own as well as the world's. The culmination of the liturgical year is the Feast of Christ the King. "This feast asserts the supreme authority of Christ over human beings and their institutions... Beyond it we see Advent dawning with its perspective of the Lord's coming in glory. Today's feast is a spiritual journey to two holy tombs, that of St. Peter and that of St. Paul in Rome. These two basilicas, marking the place of each apostle's martyrdom, are the common heritage and glory of Christendom; it is, therefore, easily seen why we observe their dedication Thanksgiving Mass and Blessing of Food Baskets We will have the blessing of Thanksgiving baskets and food for the poor at our Thanksgiving Day Mass.
5 Thirty-Third Sunday in Ordinary Time Year of Mercy December 8, 2015, to the Feast of Christ the King November 20, 2016 Misericordes sicut Pater! (Merciful like the Father) How can we show others the mercy of God? We say that God is compassionate, but we ignore the poor. We say that God loves us and has mercy on us, but we hold grudges against our friends. Our actions need to authentically reflect God's mercy Moments of Mercy November Death is a difficult topic to discuss for many people, but it is something we face on a regular basis. The Church celebrates the life and memory of those who have passed from this world and reminds us of God's merciful love. There are many examples of this: at the beginning of November, the Church celebrates the Solemnity of All Saints and the Commemoration of All the Faithful Departed (All Souls); there are vigils for the deceased, funeral liturgies, rites of committal and final commendation, and prayers for the deceased and those who are mourning. All of these prayers and services help us acknowledge our grief, celebrate the life of the one who has passed away, and find solace in the loving compassion of God. 1. Throughout this month, we should commend in prayer the bodies and souls of those who have died and who may still be in need of God's mercy in purgatory. Sometimes it helps to write out a list or mention specific names of those who have died. Add some of these prayers and scripture readings to your daily prayer time. 2. In addition to praying for them, we can help those who are grieving in a tangible way. Be open to listening to someone who is grieving. You could volunteer with a bereavement ministry at your parish if it has one (this usually involves helping organize funeral liturgies and/ or a small reception or luncheon afterward for the family). In these small acts of mercy, we show others that the love of God is still present in their lives and their communities even though they are grieving. There will be a Celebration of the Closing of the Holy Door of Saint Peter s Basilica, which will take place on 20 November, We cross the Holy Door of Mercy with the certainty that the Virgin Mother accompanies us, the Holy Mother of God, who intercedes for us. Let us permit ourselves to be accompanied by her to rediscover the beauty of encountering her Son Jesus. (Pope Francis) God offers his gift of mercy to each and every one of us, no matter what. But we have to decide to receive that gift whether or not to turn away from sin and turn, instead, toward him. We have to decide whether we want God. The theme of the Respect Life Program is "Moved by Mercy". When we let our hearts be moved by God's mercy, it shapes everything. As Pope Francis said, "We are called to show mercy because mercy has first been shown to us". God made each of us in his own image and likeness. He desires to be united with us forever in a loving relationship. God loves us, treats us with respect, and asks us to do the same with others. Every person is sacred and must be treated with the dignity they deserve. No one should ever be treated callously or carelessly everyone should be cherished and protected! From each tiny child waiting to be born, to individuals nearing death, all are precious and deserve our care and protection. Women and men suffering after abortion, individuals tempted to end their lives, couples longing to conceive a child, people pushed to the margins of society by a "throwaway culture," expectant mothers facing challenging pregnancies, and every other person each "has a place in God's heart from all eternity". Let's ask God to make us channels of his loving mercy: Lord, help us to receive your mercy and turn to you each moment. And please guide us in extending your mercy to others today. Now is the time for mercy! November 15th Memorial of St. Albert the Great Today the Church celebrates the optional memorial of St. Albert the Great, son of a German nobleman, who was studying at Padua when the Master General of the Dominicans, Jordan of Saxony, succeeded in attracting him to that Order. He was to become one of its greatest glories. After taking his degrees at the University of Paris he taught philosophy and theology at Paris and then in Cologne. St. Thomas Aquinas was among his pupils. His knowledge was encyclopedic. In 1260 he was named Bishop of Ratisbon and devoted himself zealously to the duties of his office. But soon resigned in order to continue his teaching and research. St. Albert died in Cologne on November 15, Legend credits him with drawing the ground plans for the cathedral at Cologne. Albert, the greatest German scholar of the Middle Ages, was outstanding in the fields of natural science, theology, and philosophy Albert is named "Doctor Universalis" because of his vast knowledge and writings. Patron: medical technicians; natural sciences; philosophers; schoolchildren; scientists; students; students of theology.
6 Thirty-third Sunday in Ordinary Time Malachi 3:19-20a God's Fire Fire burns, purifies, cooks, and cleanses. It can work wondrous good. It can cause unspeakable ill. Fire is powerful, as God is powerful. The prophet Malachi envisions the coming of destructive fire. The prevalence of evil is widespread. It was then and is now. Its potential for wreaking havoc is extensive. Malachi believes, as we believe, that God is more powerful than evil, that God is good, and that God will not tolerate the evil of the world. We believe that in time God will set things right. Evil will be punished. We long for that day. Malachi sees that day as a day of fire. The day is coming, blazing like an oven, when all the proud and all evildoers will be stubble. The fire will rage over those who do wrong. They will not endure. God s wrath will be stronger than their desire to do ill. God will have power over them, even when our human frailty does not. There will also be fire for the good. Fire has other properties. It does not only destroy. It brings warmth. For you who fear my name, God says through Malachi, there will arise the sun of justice with its healing rays. The fiery sun will rise in the east and shine with healing upon those who do good. God comes like fire. God does not change. But those who do ill are like stubble. Those who do good shall be healed.
