Sat. during June Litanies After the 8:30am Mass For Reflection: How does having God s law written on my heart help me in my spiritual life? Has this Lent been a time of renewal for me? How can I best make use of these last weeks to grow spiritually? Today s good news Jeremiah, living during some of Israel s darkest days, the Babylonian Exile, prophesies a time when God will renew the earth and its people: Days are coming when [the Lord] will make a new covenant. In the prior covenant, God s law was written on stone tablets, but they broke my covenant. Now God s law will be written upon their hearts ; it will be internalized. The prophet anticipates that God will once again lead them back to the Promised Land and renew their relationship: I will be their God, and they shall be my people. The author of Hebrews speaks of Christ s sacrifice as the source of eternal salvation for all who obey him. In light of the sacrifice of his death, Jesus is declared by God high priest, whose task is to offer sacrifices on behalf of the people. But unlike the other high priests, who repeatedly offer sacrifices for the sins of the people, Jesus offered himself as a sacrifice once and for all. Through his death, he reconciled us with God and established the new and eternal covenant. In Jesus s death and resurrection, the new covenant foreseen by Jeremiah is established. In today s Gospel some Greek-speaking Jews ask Philip to introduce them to Jesus. Our evangelist does not narrate a mere meeting but uses this request to introduce the beginning of Jesus s hour, his kairos: The hour has come for the Son of Man to be glorified, Jesus says. Earlier in the Gospel, Jesus had anticipated this hour, but from this point he embraces it. It is a time of significance, the time he has waited for and the reason he came into the world. In this hour Jesus will experience death and then resurrection, inaugurating the new covenant that binds the people to God in a new way, leading to our salvation.

Originally a feast of our Lord, but now celebrated as a Marian feast, the feast of the Annunciation dates back at least to the fifth century, and the date of the feast, which is determined by the date of Christmas, was set at March 25 by the seventh century. The Annunciation, as much as or even more so than Christmas, represents Christ's Incarnation. When Mary signaled to Gabriel her acceptance of God's Will, Christ was conceived in her womb through the power of the Holy Spirit. While most of the Fathers of the Church say that Mary's fiat was essential to God's plan of salvation, God foresaw Mary's acceptance of His Will from all eternity. The narrative of the Annunciation testifies powerfully to the truth of the Catholic tradition that Mary was indeed a virgin when Christ was conceived, but also that she intended to remain one perpetually. Mary's response to Gabriel "How shall this be done, because I know not man?" was universally interpreted by the Fathers of the Church as a statement of the Mary's resolution to remain a virgin. 5 Fifth Sunday in Lent Fifth Sunday in Lent (Previously called Passion Sunday) Until 1959, the fifth Sunday of Lent was known as Passion Sunday. In 1960, Pope John XXIII's Code of Rubrics changed the name for that Sunday to "First Sunday of the Passion" bringing the name into harmony with the name that Pope Pius XII gave, five years earlier, to the sixth Sunday of Lent, "Second Sunday of the Passion or Palm Sunday". Out of the depths I call to you O Lord: Lord hear my cry. Listen attentively to the sound of my pleading! In this, the fifth Sunday of Lent, the Church invites us to turn our attention to the realities that are perhaps the most scandalous in human experience, the death of a loved one. In this Gospel we see all those who are being supportive of Martha and Mary at the moment of their brother, Lazarus death. Previously called "Passion Sunday," this Sunday marks the beginning of Passiontide, a deeper time of Lent. This is the third Sunday of the scrutinies for the preparation of adult converts, and the final Sunday of Lent before the beginning of Holy Week. The Liturgy of the Word of this day speaks of re-creation, resurrection, and new life. Pope Paul VI's revision in 1969 removed a distinction that existed (although with overlap) between Lent and Passiontide, which began with the fifth Sunday of Lent. The distinction, explicit in the 1960 Code of Rubrics, predates it. He removed from the fifth Sunday of Lent the reference to the Passion. " From the desk of Bishop Noonan: The Sacrament of Reconciliation My Sisters and Brothers in Christ: One opportunity in which to become more like Christ during this holy season is to participate in the Sacrament of Penance. We are earthen vessels and we do sin. Our transgressions draw us away from God and we become wounded. The Sacrament of Penance is one of healing; by our participation in the Sacrament, we are able to reconcile the distance between ourselves and God, to heal these wounds. We begin again with a renewed spirit to bear witness to Him in every way possible. The Sacrament of Penance is one of conversion because by our participation, it makes sacramentally present Jesus call to conversion, the first step in returning to God. How many of us have acted unkindly and in our recognition of our action find a peace in our acknowledgement and our desire to not repeat our action? Because we confess our wrongdoing to the priest, entrusted with the ministry of Christ, the Sacrament of Penance is also known as one of confession. We acknowledge and praise the holiness of God and His mercy toward us. Pope Francis said, That is why it is not enough to ask the Lord for forgiveness in one s own mind and heart, but why instead it is necessary humbly and trustingly to confess one s sins to a minister of the Church. In the celebration of this Sacrament, the priest represents not only God but also the whole community, who sees itself in the weakness of each of its members, who listens and is moved by his repentance, and who is reconciled with him, which cheers him up and accompanies him on the path of conversion and human and Christian growth. During the Sacrament, we meet the Lord, who wants to grant forgiveness and the grace to live a renewed life in Him. He prepares us to receive Him free from serious sin, with a lively faith, earnest hope, and sacrificial love in the Eucharist. By the grace of the Holy Spirit, we seek forgiveness and repentance, let go of patterns of sin, grow in the life of virtue, and witness to a joyful conversion. As we are purified by the sacred Sacrament of Penance, may God lead us in sincerity of heart to attain the holy things to come. The Sacrament of Reconciliation is available on Fridays during Lent from 6 7 PM Lenten Soup Suppers Lenten soup suppers will continue during Lent from 4:30Pm to 7:30PM prior to the Stations of the Cross. Soups this week are sea food chowder and black bean Donations are gratefully accepted. Stations of the Cross The Stations of the Cross are held each Friday at 7PM. Living Stations The students in grades 7 and 8 will present The Living Stations on Friday, March 27, 2015 at 7:00 p.m. in the Church. Invite family and friends to the beautiful portrayal of Jesus last steps. All are welcome

6 Fifth Sunday of Lent Hebrews 5:7-9 Learning to Obey Obedience includes suffering. We sometimes disobey in order to avoid suffering, but that also exacts a price. You re afraid you ll show up late, so you speed and get a ticket. You re afraid you ll flunk a test, so you cheat and get caught. You know you shouldn t check out some sites on the internet, but you do and now you re sorry. The consequences of disobedience are severe. The consequences of obedience include suffering. When we obey, we give up something of our own preferences, goals and lusts. When we obey, we think of the good of others more than the pleasures we d like. This brings its own pleasure, but it involves suffering. Jesus obeyed the Father s will, and it included suffering. The Letter to the Hebrews says, He offered prayers and supplications with loud cries and tears to the one who was able to save him from death. He did not want to die. Yet, He learned obedience from what he suffered. Jesus learned what it meant to obey. He suffered, but he became the source of eternal salvation for all who obey him. As Lent draws to its close, reflect back on Ash Wednesday. On that day you confessed your sins and promised to lead a better life. By now it should be clearer what you must do. It will not be easy. Suffering never is. But you will find peace when you obey God s will. Written by Paul Turner. Copyright 2008, Resource Publications, Inc., , All rights reserved.
