Sat. during June Litanies After the am Mass For Reflection: While resolutely determining to journey with Jesus this week, which priorities do I need to reorder? Today s good news In the 1st Book of Kings, Elisha is allowed to return to his family after being anointed as successor to Elijah. In contrast, Jesus rejects the one who wanted to return home prior to following the Lord. The one who wanted to return home prior to following the Lord: No one who sets a hand to the plow and looks to what was left behind is fit for the kingdom of God. In the second reading, Paul speaks of the opposition between flesh and spirit and how Christians must serve one another. This passage causes us to think about our call to holiness and discipleship and the obstacles placed in our way of serving one another or if we erect barriers when invited to follow the Lord. The Gospel features characters who, like us, experience personal and family responsibilities that sometimes conflict in heart-wrenching ways with faith s all-or-nothing demands. But note the contrast. Elijah, usually strict, gently grants Elisha s request to bid parents farewell. Jesus, usually gentle, sternly warns one would-be disciple that saying, I will follow you wherever can mean nowhere to settle down. Another, personally invited by Jesus, and one who volunteered, seem heartlessly denied reasonable family requests. So much for our own compromises and excuses! But even before challenging disciples to follow without compromise or delay, Jesus forbids judging those who choose not to do so. Jesus turned and rebuked (Luke 9:55) snapped around and snapped at disciples wanting to call down fire from heaven to consume them (9:54). Again, note the contrast. Elijah called down fire three times to consume sacrifices and opponents. Jesus cares less about outsiders rejection than disciples vengeful violence. Disciples seem to have accepted Jesus, but clearly reject the practical consequences of accepting without compromise Jesus gospel of love non-judgmental compassion and uncompromising mercy even to those rejecting Jesus.

Whom would parishioners name as people who follow Jesus with all their hearts? As we continue to honor World Day of Prayer for Vocations, we would like to continue offering individuals or families to take a special cross and prayer booklet (in English and Spanish) home from each weekend Mass to pray for Vocations. Then, bring it back the next weekend for another family to take home. If not picked up at Mass, the crosses and booklets can be signed out in the Gift Shop after each Mass. Cor Jesu Food Pantry Please remember to bring food for our Food Pantry, Cor Jesu. They are in need of spaghetti, spaghetti sauce, boxed pasta, baked beans, Ramen noodles, and instant mashed potatoes. Please make checks payable to Cor Jesu or the Food Pantry. Food store gift cards are always appreciated to assist those in need for perishable items such as meat, milk or bread. Thank you Hospital Visitation If you are admitted to the hospital and wish to be visited or receive communion, you must notify the church office. Due to privacy laws, no one is allowed to just ask for a list of Catholics. So do not think that even though you may have stated that you are Catholic upon admission, you can only be visited upon your request. This will aid those who visit, to make sure you are included. Thanks and Welcome! The month of June is dedicated to The Sacred Heart of Jesus. This month falls within the liturgical season of Ordinary Time, which is represented by the liturgical color green. This symbol of hope is the color of the sprouting seed and arouses in the faithful the hope of reaping the eternal harvest of heaven, especially the hope of a glorious resurrection. It is used in the offices and Masses of Ordinary Time. The last portion of the liturgical year represents the time of our pilgrimage to heaven during which we hope for reward.

4 St. Teresa of Avila Catholic Church and School June 26, 2016 FAITH FORMATION CCD Registration Registration for CCD will begin July 1, July 10, and July 17, 2016 after the 9:30 a.m. and before the 11:30 a.m. mass. Classes begin on Wednesday, August 24, at 6:00 p.m. Reminder, the diocese requires a 2 year program for those who will be doing First Communion (1st and 2nd grade), or Confirmation (7th and 8th grade). Our program is designed to build the child s faith year by year. Starting with, Kindergarten through 8th grade. If you have any questions, or would like to meet with me prior to your child attending CCD please make arrangements for a meeting. We cherish each person as a child of God. We pray for victims of violence and acts of terror...for their families and friends...and all those affected by such acts against God's love. We pray for the people of the city of Orlando that God's mercy and love will be upon us as we seek healing and consolation. Every time we look at the Cross, we see how God has forgiven us in Christ with a love that bears all things, believes all things, hopes all things, endures all things; love never fails. We dry the tears of those who weep and mourn as gently as Veronica wiped the Lord s bleeding face on the Via Dolorosa. May the Peace of Christ dwell within our heart. Doctor of the Church The title Doctor of the Church, unlike the popular title Father of the Church, is an official designation that is bestowed by the Pope in recognition of the outstanding contribution a person has made to the understanding and interpretation of the sacred Scriptures and the development of Christian doctrine. As of 2016, the official list includes thirty-six male and female Doctors of the Catholic Church who hail from all ages of the Church s history. There are three requirements that must be fulfilled by a person in order to merit being included in the ranks of the Doctors of the Catholic Church : 1) holiness that is truly outstanding, even among saints; 2) depth of doctrinal insight; and 3) an extensive body of writings which the church can recommend as an expression of the authentic and life-giving Catholic Tradition. St. Teresa of Avila is one of four woman with the title of Doctor of the Church. We encourage you in our petition to have St. Faustina included among this venerable group, as she clearly fostered and wrote extensively regarding the Mercy of Our Lord. Save the Date October 7th Volunteer Dinner Our Volunteer Dinner will be on Friday October 7th with 5 PM Mass, followed by the dinner. The Ministry Chairpersons have received their ministry lists to update them with names, addresses, and preferably addresses. Please mark this on your calendar. Ministry Fair September 10-11, 2016 We will be having a Ministry Fair the weekend of September 10-11, 2016 after all the weekend Masses. It will take place in the Parish Center. The theme will be We have a spot for you. Could you please let me know if you would like to participate and can make up a poser (3-part so it will stand on a table). (They do have these in the Dollar Tree.) It should cover your particular ministry pictures, quotes, information, etc. Make a sign-up chart for those who are interested in your ministry. Get names, phone numbers, address, Mass they usually go to, and s. Since the theme is spots the tables will be covered with pokea-dot paper of various colored dots or spots. You will have half of an 8 foot table. If you need more than half a table please let me know. Treats are always welcome by those who come. There will be prizes! May you obtain many new people for your ministry!

5 Thirteenth Sunday in Ordinary Time June 29th Feast of Saints Peter and Paul Veneration of the two great Apostles, Peter and Paul, has its roots in the very foundations of the Church. They are the solid rock on which the Church is built. They are at the origin of her faith and will forever remain her protectors and her guides. To them Rome owes her true greatness, for it was under God's providential guidance that they were led to make the capital of the Empire, sanctified by their martyrdom, the center of the Christian world whence should radiate the preaching of the Gospel. St. Peter suffered martyrdom under Nero, in A.D. 66 or 67. He was buried on the hill of the Vatican where recent excavations have revealed his tomb on the very site of the basilica of St. Peter's. Peter's original name was Simon. Christ Himself gave him the name Cephas or Peter when they first met and later confirmed it. This name change was meant to show both Peter's rank as leader of the apostles and the outstanding trait of his character Peter (in Hebrew Kephas) the Rock. Peter was born in Bethsaida on the Sea of Galilee. Like his younger brother Andrew, he was a fisherman and dwelt at Capernaum. Peter's house often became the scene of miracles, since the Master would stay there whenever He was teaching in that locality. After the ascension, Peter always took the leading role, exercising the office of chief shepherd that Christ had entrusted to him. He delivered the first sermon on Pentecost and received the first Gentiles into the Church.It is certain that Peter labored in Rome as an apostle, that he was the city's first bishop, and that he died there as a martyr, bound to a cross (67 A.D.). He is Patron saint of fisherman. St. Paul was beheaded in the via Ostia on the spot where now stands the basilica bearing his name. Down the centuries Christian people in their thousands have gone on pilgrimage to the tombs of these Apostles. In the second and third centuries the Roman Church already stood pre-eminent by reason of her apostolicity, the infallible truth of her teaching and her two great figures, Sts. Peter and Paul. Paul, known as Saul (his Roman name) before his conversion, was born at Tarsus in the Roman province of Silicia about two or three years after the advent of the Redeemer. After receiving baptism and making some initial attempts at preaching, Paul withdrew into the Arabian desert (c A.D.), where he prepared himself for his future mission. During this retreat he was favored with special revelations, Christ appearing to him personally. The last years of the saint's life were devoted to missionary excursions, probably including Spain, and to revisiting his first foundations. In 66 he returned to Rome, was taken prisoner, and beheaded a year later. His fourteen letters are a precious legacy; they afford a deep insight into a great soul. He is Patron saint of authors and missionary bishops. A plenary indulgence may be gained today by anyone who makes devout use of a religious article blessed by a bishop and who also recites any approved profession of faith (e.g. the Apostles Creed), as long as the usual conditions are satisfied. June 30th Remembrance of the First Martyrs of the Holy Roman Empire The First Martyrs of the Church of Rome were Christians martyred in the city of Rome during Nero's persecution in 64. The event is recorded by both Tacitus and Pope Clement I, among others. They are celebrated in the Roman Catholic Church as an optional memorial on 30 June. The holy men and women are also called the "Protomartyrs of Rome." They were accused of burningrome by Nero, who burned Rome to cover his own crimes. Some martyrs were burned as living torches at evening banquets, some crucified, others were fed to wild animals. These martyrs died before Sts. Peter and Paul, and are called "disciples of the Apostles... whom the Holy Roman church sent to theirlord before the Apostles' death." The placement of the feast is directly after the Solemnity of SS Peter and Paul, who are the principal patron saints of Rome. The subsequent martyrs are associated with this patronage. The feast day was formerly occupied with a Commemoration of St. Paul, and fell in the Octave of SS Peter and Paul. Wherever the Good News of Jesus was preached, it met the same opposition as Jesus did, and many of those who began to follow him shared his suffering and death. But no human force could stop the power of the Spirit unleashed upon the world. The blood of martyrs has always been, and will always be, the seed of Christians. Why Do We Pray to Mary? Mary is a mother to all men. Catholics believe that the Son of God chose to come into the world through a mother in order that that mother might accept as His brothers all the children of the sinful race of man. He set an example as to how she should be honored and loved. He prepared her for this motherhood of all by asking her to suffer every conceivable form of pain, thus teaching her sympathy for the sorrows of her children. Had she been His Mother alone, He would have spared her from pain, because He had the power to do so and because He loved her with an infinite love. He wrought His first public miracle at her request, and when He was dying He reminded her that she had been destined from the beginning to be a Mother to all. Catholics therefore believe that Mary will be as eager to help them, in troubles of soul and body, as every natural mother is eager to promote the welfare of her child. The rosaries that Catholics recite are but the expression of their belief in these two truths. They know that if Mary speaks to her Divine Son in their behalf, there can be no doubt about their receiving an answer to their prayers.

6 Thirteenth Sunday in Ordinary Time 1 Kings 19:16b, Owning Christ Most people save stuff. We are packrats. We save clothes that have not fit for years. We save computer files we may never look at again. When we run out of closets at home, we rent additional space to store things. Once in a while we have a garage sale to thin down our possessions. But we rarely hear of anyone getting rid of everything in order to start over again. When Elisha agreed to follow Elijah as his attendant, he left his livelihood as a farmer. He broke up the yoke he steered for plowing and used it to fuel a fire. He slaughtered his oxen and used the fire to boil their flesh. He served the flesh to his people to eat. Elisha left nothing behind. To be a follower of Christ, we must be prepared to travel light. Our possessions may distract us from keeping Christ as the center of our being. We may also be distracted by too many interests, too many commitments, too much food, or too much play. When Elisha decided to follow Elijah, he broke up, burned up, and cooked up everything he owned. When we decide to follow Christ, we will leave some things behind. It will not feel right at first. It is hard to let go of the things of our past. We are packrats. But the future is glorious if Christ is all we own. Written by Paul Turner.
