They not only accept Christ and his teaching, but they live up to it, and, come what may, they are faithful to it. These will produce fruit and will earn for themselves eternal happiness. The first reading is taken from the Book of the Prophet Isaiah 55: The word of God which came to the Chosen People through the prophets, and the divinely inspired writers, came out of God's loving interest in His people. He wanted to prepare them for the inheritance, the real "promised land," that, when the messianic age (the "fullness of time") came, would be theirs, provided their lives on earth were lived as they should be. The second reading is from the Letter of St. Paul to the Romans 8:18-23 and is about present suffering and the glory of God. Suffering is an essential part of the Christian life and one who truly believes will have his or her share of hardships and trials. Yet, these are not ends in themselves, as there is hope that they will terminate with the full revelation of the glory of God. The theme and message of St. Paul is not to lose hope in the Lord into whose risen life we have been initiated by Baptism. The Gospel is from St. Matthew 13:1-23. Christ's description of His audience, that day in Galilee, is unfortunately as true today as it was then. His message of salvation has been preached to a great part of the world's population, but the proportion of those who accept it and live up to it, is about the same today as it was then. There are millions of men and women today, in what was once Christian Europe, who are like the seed sown on the unplowed path. They refuse to accept the message, they have no thought for their future, they are content to end in the grave after their few years of misery and hardship on this planet. There are others who see the truth and the consolation of the Christian gospel, but when it comes to making sacrifices for it, they give up. The message did not sink into their hearts and minds. They are like the seed which fell on rocky ground because the faith had no deep roots in their lives. Others again, and they are legion, are like the seed that fell among the briars and thorns. They accepted the faith and it took root in them, but later on, "the cares of the world and the delight in riches chokes the word and it proves unfruitful," these are our Lord's own words.

Feast of St Christopher July 25th The Feast of St. Christopher is July 25 th. St. Christopher is the patron saint of travelers and drivers. After each Mass on this weekend of July Fr. Richard will be happy to sprinkle your cars or trucks with holy water. Remember, also, that little holy things can be put in your cars. There are dashboard pewter and other small statues for sale in the Gift Shop, as well as various visor clips. Check them out! This passage, from the day s Gospel reading, was the starting point for Pope Francis reflections ahead of the Sunday services. Jesus, the Pope said, addresses this invitation to everyone, without exception, who feels weary or burdened by life. Jesus knows how hard life can be, he said. He knows how many things can cause our hearts to grow weary. In the face of all these burdens of life, the first word of Jesus invitation is Come. When things are going badly, Pope Francis said, it is a mistake to remain where we are. Although this might seem evident, he continued, it is natural in moments of darkness to turn in on ourselves, to brood on the injustices of life, the ingratitude of others, or the wickedness of the world. But Jesus wants to pull us out of this quicksand. The way out is in the relationship, in reaching out our hand and lifting our gaze toward the one Who truly loves us. Let us learn to go to Jesus, Pope Francis said in conclusion. And while, in these summer months, we seek some respite from those things that weary the body, let us not forget to find true rest in the Lord.

4 St. Teresa of Avila Catholic Church and School July 16, 2017 FAITH FORMATION CCD Registration Registration for CCD will begin July 31 st after the 9:30 a.m. and before the 11:30 a.m. Masses. Classes begin on Wednesday, August 23 rd. (If raining, then in the Parish Center) Reminder, the diocese requires a 2 year program for those who will be doing First Communion (1 st and 2 nd grade), or Confirmation (7 th and 8 th grade). RCIA RCIA will begin Thursday, August 24 th at 6:30 PM in Avila Hall. If you are wanting to learn more about the Catholic Faith, and are interested in becoming Catholic, please come or contact the Faith Formation Office. CCD Assistance We will be looking for help with CCD classes, we have grown and are needing assistants for some of the classes. If you are interested, please contact Vicki Shoemaker ( ). If you are needing volunteer hours for Confirmation (9 th graders), or for school, this is a great way to get them Cor Jesu Requesting Assistance The Cor Jesu Food Pantry has always relied on and appreciated the many parishioners who either donate or volunteer to this ministry serving the needy of North Brevard. This vital ministry would not exist without this direct parish support. We have the opportunity to receive free groceries from a couple of local grocery stores, but need able bodied people with access to a pickup truck to retrieve these free groceries and bring them to the pantry. Even with all the groceries that the parish donates, the pantry still needs to purchase groceries to meet the needs of the community. That makes these free groceries very important. We would like to develop a list of volunteers who would be able to do these pickups for us. This would only entail about two hours of time, one morning a week. So if you have one morning a week that you could reliably commit to us, you could become an important part in the mission of feeding God's hungry people. If this is a ministry that you would enjoy, please call Bruce Moquin at and get on this list. Our need for a volunteer is immediate. Thank you and God Bless. Cor Jesu Food Pantry Jesus Tells the Crowd the Parable of the Sower Jesus wanted to spend some time by himself, so he found a quiet spot by the sea. Once word spread that Jesus was there, so many people came to see him that he had to get into a boat and preach to the people from there. He told them a story. Pretending to throw seed, Jesus said, A sower went out to sow. And as he sowed, some seed fell on the path, and birds came and ate it up. Some fell on rocky ground, where it had little soil. It sprang up at once because the soil was not deep, and when the sun rose it was scorched, and it withered for lack of roots. Some seed fell among thorns, and the thorns grew up and choked it. Then Jesus paused and held his arms up and out. But some seed, he said, fell on rich soil, and produced fruit, a hundred or sixty or thirtyfold. Whoever has ears ought to hear. Afterward, the disciples asked Jesus a question. Why do you speak to them in parables? Jesus answered, Because knowledge of the mysteries of the kingdom of heaven has been granted to you, but to them it has not been granted. To anyone who has, more will be given and he will grow rich; from anyone who has not, even what he has will be taken away. This is why I speak to them in parables, because they look but do not see and hear but do not listen or understand. The disciples felt privileged that Jesus would share the mysteries of the kingdom of heaven with them, but they were not sure even they understand the story Jesus had just told. Knowing this, Jesus explained it to them. The seed sown on the path is the one who hears the word of the kingdom without understanding it, and the evil one comes and steals away what was sown in his heart. The seed sown on rocky ground is the one who hears the word and receives it at once with joy. But he has no root and lasts only for a time.... But the seed sown on rich soil is the one who hears the word and understands it, who indeed bears fruit and yields a hundred or sixty or thirtyfold. Cor Jesu is in need of food donations. Cash donations or gift cards to local stores are helpful for perishable items. Cor Jesu Food Pantry. Gift cards can be used to purchase perishable items such as milk, bread and meat. There are many children in need of food during the summer as they may often only have a real meal at school. Keep this in mind as you choose your donation. Thank you Rowing for Fatima Greg Dougherty is Rowing-4-Fatima on an 18 ft. skiff row boat. The goal is to row from Miami, Florida to New York City, in effort to spread the message of Fatima and promulgate the rosary along the way. The mission so far has attracted many people, including many fallen away and non-catholics. A few churches, as he's moved along, have hosted Greg, but at times he's had to sleep on the boat or camp. He is hoping to visit many churches on the coastal waterways. He was warmly welcomed by St. Teresa's parishioners in Titusville. Marian Festival for Our Lady of Peace and Good Voyage (Birhen ng Antipolo) July 23 The Ministry to the Filipinos in the Diocese of Orlando warmly invites you to a Marian Festival in honor of Our Lady of Peace and Good Voyage (Birhen ng Antipolo) on July 23 at the Basilica of the National Shrine of Mary, Queen of the Universe, 8300 Vineland Ave., Orlando, FL. 5 Fifteenth Sunday in Ordinary Time Memorial of St. Mary Magdalene July 22nd The feast of St. Mary Magdalene is considered one of the most mystical of feasts, and it is said that of all the songs of the saints, that of Mary Magdalene is the sweetest and strongest because her love was so great. That love was praised by Jesus Himself who said that because much was forgiven her, she loved much. Where she is buried, no one knows. Legend has her dying in Provence, France, in a cavern where she spent her last days, and her body resting in the chapel of St. Maximin in the Maritime Alps. Another has her buried in Ephesus where she went with St. John after the Resurrection. This latter view is more likely, and St. Willibald, the English pilgrim to the Holy Land in the eighth century, was shown her tomb there. The true identification of St. Mary Magdalene is not quite clear. The Greek Fathers gave her a separate identity than Mary of Bethany, sister of Martha and Lazarus, but most Latin Fathers say she is the same Mary. From Dictionary of the Bible by Scott Hahn (Doubleday, 2009): Tradition often identifies Mary Magdalene either with the sinful woman who anointed Christ's feet in Luke 7:36-50 or with Mary of Bethany, the sister of Lazarus and Martha mentioned in Luke 10:38-42 and John By the sixth century A.D., figures such as Gregory the Great had begun to advance the notion that these two women mentioned in Scripture were one and the same person: Mary Magdalene, who hailed from Bethany and who had become a disciple of Jesus after leading a notoriously sinful life. This tradition explains why Mary Magdalene was revered for centuries as the "model penitent." From a biblical standpoint, it is not impossible that Mary Magdalene could be identified with either one or both of these two women, but decisive evidence is lacking and so it must remain uncertain. She was the first recorded witness to the resurrection of Jesus, His most ardent and loving follower. She had stood with Mary at the foot of the Cross on that brutal Good Friday afternoon and had been by the side of Mary during these difficult hours. On Easter morning, she went with the other women to the tomb and it was there, in the garden near the tomb, that Jesus appeared to her. It was she who brought the news of the Resurrection to the Apostles, and Peter and John raced to the tomb to see what had happened. She was from Magadala, a small fishing town on the Sea of Galilee, between Capernaum and Tiberias. She was known to be a "great sinner," a woman of the streets who heard Jesus speak of the mercy and forgiveness of God and changed her life completely. Her matter-of-fact witness to the Resurrection moved Peter and John to go and see for themselves: "I have seen the Lord and these things he said to me." Jesus had chosen her to bring the news to them and she simply told them what had happened. She has always been the example of great love and great forgiveness, one of those close to Jesus who grasped the truth of God's love for human beings and spent her life bearing witness to that love. O Blessed Virgin, Mother of God, look down in mercy from heaven, where thou art enthroned as Queen, upon me, a miserable sinner, thine unworthy servant. There are moments, my Mother, in which my soul feels touched, in its deepest recesses, by an ineffable yearning. Although I know full well my own unworthiness, yet in order to atone for the offenses that are done to thee by impious and blasphemous tongues, from the depths of my heart I praise and extol thee as the purest, the fairest, the holiest creature of all God's handiwork. I bless thy holy name, I praise thine exalted privilege of being truly Mother of God, ever virgin, conceived without stain of sin, coredemptrix of the human race. I bless the Eternal Father who chose thee in an especial way for His daughter; I bless the Word Incarnate who took upon Himself our nature in thy bosom and so made thee His Mother; I bless the Holy Spirit who took thee as His bride. All honor, praise and thanksgiving to the ever-blessed Trinity, who predestined thee and loved thee so exceedingly from all eternity as to exalt thee above all creatures to the most sublime heights. O Virgin, holy and merciful, obtain for all who offend thee the grace of repentance, and graciously accept this poor act of homage from me thy servant, obtaining likewise for me from thy divine Son the pardon and remission of all my sins. Amen. I long for the time in which I loved thee, and thou didst love me, in the vernal atmosphere of my spiritual life. I yearn for thee, my Lady, and for the paradise which was placed in me, by the great communication that I had with thee. Dost thou not also, my Lady, long for that time? Dost thou not long for the goodness which existed in that son that I once was? Come therefore, thou who art the best of all mothers, and for the love of that which was blossoming in me, restore me. Recompose in me that love for thee and make of me the complete realization of that son without stain which I would have been if I had not been so miserable. Give me, O my Mother, a repentant and humbled heart, and make shine anew before my eyes that which by the splendor of thy grace, I had once begun to love so very much. Remember, O Lady, this David, and all of the sweetness thou didst place in him. So be it.

6 Fifteenth Sunday in Ordinary Time Isaiah 55:10 11 Life-giving Word We cannot live without water. Rain has a job to do. It comes from the heavens and waters the earth. The earth then brings forth seed for crops and enables the baking of bread and the preparation of essential foods. Water returns to the sky, the prophet Isaiah says, but only after it has done its job. We cannot live without the word of God. It has a job to do as well. It comes from the heavens to bring its fruitfulness to the earth. It announces God s love, provides direction for the wayward, and gives hope to those who despair. God s word returns to heaven, but not before it has done its job. Sometimes we squander these gifts. Household plants may be inches away from water, but they will not grow unless we give them a drink. We may be inches away from God s word. It comes to us in the Scriptures, in the order of nature, in the counsel of friends, and in the community of believers. But we cannot grow unless we lift the cup and take a drink. Where does God s word speak around you? What occasions do you have to listen? God s word has a job to do. Put it to work. Written by Paul Turner.
