Readings for the 3rd Sunday in Ordinary Time January 27, 2019 First Reading: Nehemiah 8:2-4a They read the book of the Law and understood what was read. Was it unanswered really? We have a father in heaven who really loves us, and cares for us, let us make our temporal, as well as our spiritual needs, known to him in confident prayer. Our requests will not go unanswered. The first reading is taken from Isaiah 62:1-5. Isaiah compares Yahweh to a young man who marries a virgin. His love transforms her. She used to be called "Forsaken". Now she has a new name, "My Delight". The second reading is from the first Letter of St. Paul to the Corinthians, 12:4-11 and teaches that God is the origin of spiritual gifts. The various graces which the members of the Church receive are a living reflection of God who, being essentially one, and so is a trinity of persons. Therefore, diversity of gifts and graces is as important as their basic unity, because all have the same divine origin and the same purpose the common good. Excerpted from The Navarre Bible, Corinthians The Gospel is from John 2:1-12. There are many lessons we can learn from this incident in Christ's life: for example, Christ's approval of marriage there were some heretical sects later who said marriage was sinful, unfit for a Christian. Or we could see in it the intercessory power of our blessed Mother. Christ anticipated his "hour" for working miracles in order to grant her request. But the theme of today's readings is the goodness 'and kindness of God and we surely have a convincing proof of that loving kindness in today's gospel story. Christ worked his first miracle in order to grant a temporal favor, an earthly gift, to save the newly-married groom from embarrassment. It had the other effects of convincing his very recent disciples of their belief that he was the expected Messiah, and also it convinces all Christians of the efficacy of our Lady's intercession for us, but its primary purpose was to confer a temporal benefit on the groom. By this kind act he has shown us that he is interested in our earthly affairs also. He became man in order that we could become sons of God, he came on earth so that we could go to heaven, but this miracle at Cana proves that he has a deep interest in our many and varied activities during the course of our journey to heaven.

But the generosity of God knows no limits the miracle at Cana reminds us that whenever we faithfully do as God asks, He can change our gifts of water into wine! Eucharistic Adoration January 24, 2019 We will have an all day Eucharistic Adoration today from 10am to 6:00pm in the Chapel. Please come and not leave our Lord in the Eucharist unattended during this time. There will be the Spanish Holy Hour and Exposition from 6 7:15 PM with week and all are invited. 4 St. Teresa of Avila Catholic Church and School January 20, 2019 FAITH FORMATION Confirmation The 2019 Confirmation class will have their Rite of Acceptance Mass Sunday February 3, 2019 at the 9:30 am Mass. Please be in the Narthex by 9:15 a.m. you will process in with the Priest. First Communion Prep First Communion Prep Session II will be held Monday February 4, 2019 at 6:30pm in the Church. This is the Second of three required session for parents and children. Mass Intentions Each week, there are Mass intentions available during the weekdays. If a time is still open we pray for the deceased of the Parish or for deceased Salvatorians. We would like these slots filled with your intent for a deceased loved one or for a friend as it is more personal. It can even be for the Special Intention for yourself or others. Many choose to attend the Mass but it is not required, Please come to the church office, so we can assist you with finding a date for an intention. Monday January 21st Dr. Martin Luther King Holiday Bishop Noonan Honors and Blesses Married Couples in Mass for Marriage, February 9th The Mass for Marriage is an annual celebration held during National Marriage Week to highlight the sacrament and vocation of marriage. Married couples, their families and all who support marriage are invited to attend. The Mass will be celebrated at the St. James Cathedral, 215 N. Orange Ave., Orlando on Saturday, February 9 at 10:00 a.m. with reception to follow. Limited free parking available on the northwest corner of North Orange Avenue and West Robinson Street. Altar Server Training Students in 4th grade or higher who are interested in becoming an Altar server may attend training sessions after the 11:30 AM Mass on January 20th and 27th. Please look for the group in the back of the church. Father Chris and Father Richard would like to offer a sincere thank you to all that made Christmas and the Birth of Jesus more meaningful in many ways. Ministry to the Sick A meeting for the Ministry to the Sick will take place on Tuesday, January 22, 2019 in Avila Hall at 6:00 p.m. Anyone interested in this ministry is welcome to join us. So many things made it special. From the altar decorations, the Christmas Choir, the children s choir, the School Christmas Pageant, the Choir going to EPCOT to represent the church and each Mass for the season. 5 Second Sunday in Ordinary Time Day of Prayer for the Legal Protection of Unborn Children January 22nd God loves each human life from the instant of his or her conception and entrusts this gift to the protection of a mother and father. Abortion ends the life of a child and offends God. It also deeply wounds the women and men involved. A great prayer for life is urgently needed, a prayer which will rise up throughout the world. Through special initiatives and in daily prayer, may an impassioned plea rise to God, the Creator and lover of life, from every Christian community, from every group and association, from every family and from the heart of every believer. Pope Saint John Paul II, Evangelium Vitae, no. 100 St. Sebastian Feast Day January 20th Nothing is known about St. Sebastian's youth other than the fact he may have come from southern France and he was educated in Milan. He joined the Roman Army in 283 AD, ostensibly to be of service to other Christians who were being persecuted by the Romans. St. Sebastian distinguished himself and for his excellent service, he was promoted to serve in the Praetorian Guard to protect Emperor Diocletian. While serving as a Praetorian Guard, Marcus and Marcellian, twin brothers, were imprisoned for refusing to make public sacrifices to the Roman gods. The brothers were deacons of the Christian Church. During their imprisonment, their parents visited them to implore them to renounce Christianity. However, St. Sebastian convinced both parents to convert to Christianity. St. Sebastian also converted several other prominent individuals, including the local prefect. This led to his discovery and he was reported as a Christian to Emperor Diocletian in 286. The Emperor, who was already infamous for ordering the deaths of hundreds of Christians, scolded Sebastian and ordered him to be killed by having him tied to a stake on a training field and used as target practice. Archers riddled his body with arrows, his body was described as, "full of arrows as an urchin." Believed to be dead, the archers left his body for retrieval and burial. He was recovered by Irene of Rome, whose Christian husband was a servant to Diocletian and also martyred. Irene discovered that Sebastian was still living and she hid him and nursed him back to health. Glorious Sebastian, martyr and saint I call on your strength and courage to help me through this difficult trial. Your faith was so deep, a multitude of arrows could not finish you. I ask for your intercession that I may also survive that which threatens to destroy my beliefs in the mercy of Christ. Amen. St. Sebastian pray for us! 6 Second Sunday in Ordinary Time 1 Corinthians 12:4-11 Master of a Trade A jack of all trades is master of none, the saying goes. If you can do a lot of things, you probably do not do any of them well. Some talented people possess many gifts, but it does not take long to figure out their shortcomings as well. Most of us are happy if we can do one thing well whether it is a class at school, a task at work, parenting at home, or playing a sport. The problem is, none of us can survive doing one thing well. We need one another. We need other people who do other things well. We need specialists in auto mechanics, computer repair, teaching, and cooking to get us through the day. If you do one thing well decorating church, for example you help out a lot of other people who do not know how. Paul tells the Corinthians that the Spirit is manifest in many ways. To each individual the manifestation of the Spirit is given for some benefit. These manifestations include wisdom, knowledge, faith, healing, and other mighty deeds. In a parish they surface at worship, education, service, and even social activities that build the community. You may not think your gift can do much good, but it probably can. The Spirit gives gifts away for some benefit. This new year, you can put yours to work so that others may come to know the many gifts and wisdom of God. Written by Paul Turner.
