2 OF THE IMMACULATE TWENTY-FOURTH SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME First Reading: Today s First Reading from Sirach Continues the topic of forgiving our brothers and sisters. The author s advice, which he gives through rhetorical questions is prudent: Do not grow angry and expect healing from the Lord; do not withhold forgiveness and expect God to forgive you; do not value rage against another in the hopes of your own forgiveness. The author voices the commandment to love in negative terms: do not hate your neighbor. Always remember the covenant and move forward from each other s faults in mercy. Second Reading: This is the final Sunday we read from Paul s letter to the Romans. The brief two verses are from the next to last chapter in the letter. These verses are a summation of sorts of Paul s theology in Romans. We belong to no one or nothing else but Christ. Without repeating the reason for why we belong to him, the Romans and we know that it is because through God s grace, Christ freely justifies us. Through Baptism, we died and rose with Christ, and in our new life in Christ, we live for no other. When we die, we also die for the Lord. We live and die in faith. The totality of our new personhood is in Christ. Gospel: Today s Gospel is a continuous reading of Matthew from where last Sunday s left off. Jesus had taught his disciples a process for extending forgiveness to one who sins. Peter now asks Jesus to quantify how many times he must forgive someone. Jesus numerical response shows that forgiveness, but in turn, the servant refused to forgive a fellow servant. Forgive is Jesus message. How could something be so simple and difficult at the same time? Cathedral s New Website: Very soon, we will be uploading a new and significantly improved webpage for our Cathedral. Next weekend we have a combined Collection for the Catholic University of America and The Trinity Dome of the Basilica of the National Shrine of the Immaculate Conception, Washington, D.C. The Catholic University of America is the national University of the Catholic Church in the United States, located in Washington D. C. It provides an academically rigorous education guided by the Catholic intellectual tradition to nearly 7,000 students every year. Over 4,000 students directly receive scholarship aid from this Collection, including many from our diocese. The Basilica of the National Shrine of the Immaculate Conception in Washington, D.C. located right next to the campus of the Catholic University of America, is often referred to as America s Catholic Church. The final work on the Trinity Dome of the Basilica has been completed in preparation for the 2020, the hundredth anniversary of placing the foundation stone of the National Shrine. Wednesday, October 4 th, is the Feast of St. Francis of Assisi, well-known for his love for all of creation, including animals. Fr. LeFort will officiate at the traditional Blessing of Animals on Sunday, October 1 st at 12:30 p.m. in the Cathedral parking lot, rain or shine. Be sure to bring your various pets for this popular and simple blessing. If you are not able to bring your pet, you might bring a photo or favorite toy and our blessing will extend through them. God said: Let the water teem with an abundance of living creatures, and on the earth let birds fly beneath the dome of the sky. God created the great sea monsters and all kinds of crawling living creatures with which the water teems, and all kinds of winged birds. God saw that it was good, and God blessed them (Genesis 1:20-22a)

3 TWENTY-FOURTH SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME Food Pantry/Social Services News: Thank you for the large pantry donation we received last weekend. All items will be put to good use. We also would like to thank the students from the Bishop Magin High School for tilling, planting and watering the garden area beside Bishop Magin School. It has produced tomatoes, squash, and several other vegetables throughout the summer. Some vegetables are still growing nicely. Several students came to work the garden every day during the month of July and most of August. All produce was given to the Food Pantry. The dedication of these students continues to be a great asset to the Food Pantry. We can thank them by praying that they do well in school. The pantry always use: toothpaste, lotions, shampoo, Kleenex and deodorant. God Bless you for your continued generosity. Sister Margaret Mary Today, September 17, 2017,is Catechetical Sunday. The Rite of Christian Initiation of Adults (R.C.I.A.) Christian initiation is accomplished by three sacraments together: Baptism which is the beginning of new life; Confirmation which is its strengthening; and the Eucharist which nourishes the disciple with Christ's Body and Blood for one s transformation in Christ. At some point in their lives, many people find themselves interested in the Catholic Church. Whatever the reason, know that there are many people who desire a closer relationship with Christ and a community in which to thrive and worship to help deepen that relationship. The Rite of Christian Initiation of Adults helps individuals journey to a deeper understanding of Jesus and the Catholic faith. It is a life-changing journey.
