2 OF THE IMMACULATE Fourth Sunday Of Lent First Reading: 2 Chronicles 36:14-16, After the reign of King Josiah, a number of kings have led the people poorly, subjugating the people to the Egyptians. Although Jeremiah has witnessed to Nebuchadnezzar s place as the servant of the Lord meting out deserved punishment against Judah, the unfaithful Zedekiah revolts against Babylon. Nebuchadnezzar destroys both Judah and Jerusalem and the Babylonian captivity begins. After 70 years, Cyrus, the good king of Persia, calls for the rebuilding of the temple and allows the Jews to return to Jerusalem for this critical task. Second Reading: Ephesians 2:4-10 The Epistle reminds us that we are saved by the pure and unfettered gift that is the grace of God. We are reminded that it is God who gives, and we who receive by this beautiful passage, and that even if we are dead in our transgressions, as were the people of Judah in their exile, God awaits us with salvific, healing grace. Gospel: John 3:14-21 Jesus has been conversing with the Jewish leader and teacher Nicodemus, who is both open and curious about Jesus, coming to him in the night and affirming that clearly Jesus must be from God, or he would not be able to perform such signs. Nicodemus wants to understand what it means to be reborn. Jesus begins his answer with a reference to the miracle performed by Moses in the book of numbers, where a bronze serpent on a stick is raised and the people are saved ( a confusing passage for Bible scholars given the prohibitions of the second commandment). Jesus, too, will be raised on wood the Cross but his death is one death for the salvation of all, for all time. Verse 16 may be one of the most widely known verses of scripture in the United States due to its appearance in popular culture. 3 Social Services/Food Pantry News Sister Margaret Mary Thanks to the generous support of the Cathedral Parish, Federal Grants and Donations, we served 9 meals twice a mouth to 3,923 households in We are able to accomplish this thanks to our very dedicated volunteers, and the Cathedral for collecting food for our pantry. It is with a very grateful heart that I say God Bless each of you. Friday Morning Volunteers Sr. Margaret Mary Hohl, D.C. is asking for volunteers to assist in our Food Pantry on Friday mornings. For the dozens of volunteers throughout the rest of the weekdays, this is a very rewarding ministry where the hungry are welcomed, nourished and supported in their most basic need. If you are available, please consider speaking with Sister and becoming a fellow servant for the hungry. Thanks so much for your consideration of this request. This collection helps six Catholic agencies to provide relief and support to struggling communities and to work toward peace and reconciliation among our marginalized brothers and sisters here and around the world. 5 From Fr. LeFort March 4, 2018 Updated Cathedral As we prepare to welcome our new parish secretary we re streamlining some aspects of our parish offices. Until now, our offices have had a few different addresses which parishioners have used to contact the secretary. We are now beginning to shift to our official diocesan address: CICAlban@rcda.org. If you would, please update your address book and use this official address to communicate with us. Additionally, if you wish to contact our faith formation office, it also has a new address: FFCICA@rcda.org. Of course, our phone number remains the same and we always welcome visitors in person. Whichever way is best for you, please contact us whenever you wish. Annual Divine Mercy Consecration-33Days to Merciful Love Bishop Scharfenberger is inviting Catholics throughout the Diocese to join him in a 33-day preparation period starting Tuesday, March 6, with the book: 33 Days to Merciful Love, by Father Michael Gaitley, MIC. The preparation will lead to the annual diocesan Divine Mercy Consecration at the Cathedral of the Immaculate Conception on Divine Mercy Sunday, April 8, 2018 at 5:00 pm.
