2 OF THE IMMACULATE THIRD SUNDAY IN LENT First Reading: Isaiah recalls Israel s history when the northern tribes were conquered by the Assyrians and placed in exile. Their situation is described as darkness and their living conditions as being in the land of gloom. Their eventual freedom is attributed to the intervention of God who came to them as a light. The result of this freedom was great rejoicing and abundant joy. The prophet compares their jubilation to the joy that happens when the spoils of the harvest are shared, and when those in slavery are given their freedom. Second Reading: On more than one occasion Paul takes the Church of Corinth to task for the divisions that arise among them. Today s text is one example. Although Paul considers them brothers and sisters in the Lord, he still takes responsibility for their spiritual welfare and for the harmony that should be among them. He dismisses their bickering over whom they should follow by reminding them that it is Christ Jesus who has saved them. The Gospel he preaches is that of Christ; and that is what they are to follow. Gospel: Today s reading is Matthew s account of the beginning of Jesus public ministry. One of Matthew s themes is the connection between Jesus mission and that foretold by the prophets. He does this by quoting the Isaian passage that was the first reading. Jesus is presented as the light for the nations. Now that John the Baptist has been arrested, Jesus takes his ministry and calls the first four apostles. The immediate response of the four fishermen has become an example for every disciple who intends to follow the Lord. The Last lines of the Gospel announce the nature and scope of Jesus mission. The Council identifies and responds to the spiritual and temporal needs of the community through prayer, dialogue and action, and meets once a month. 3 THIRD SUNDAY IN LENT The collection for March 12, was $4, There were 521 people in attendance. Next week, our parish will take up The Catholic Relief Services Collection (CRSC). Funds from this collection help provide food to the hungry, support to displaced refugees, and Christ's love and respect to all people here at home and abroad. 4 March 19, 2017 Food Pantry/Social Services Thank you very much for your generous and much needed donations of money, food and supplies. The supplies that our guests receive when they visit our food pantry are put in brown paper bags that are not very sturdy. I would like to reinstate the use of cloth (recyclable) bags that our guests can use on every visit. Since food stamps cannot be used for the purchase on non-food items, I would like to ask for your help. Please consider purchasing a cloth bag (they are available at most cash registers), and drop the bag in the food pantry containers in church. God bless you for reaching out to the less fortunate in the South End. It is a personal and emotional encounter that is sure to affect all ages Chrism Mass Singers Needed On Thursday, April 6 at 7:00 p.m. our diocese will celebrate the Chrism Mass at the Cathedral. We are forming a Diocesan Choir of young people from grades 7 through College. There are two music rehearsals for this event: Saturday, March 25 from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m., and Saturday, April 1, from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the Cathedral. Attendance at a minimum of one rehearsal is necessary in order to participate.
